Chapter 17 - Reid Met Mia as ReidMia waited six months.

Then asked:

“Can I meet Reid?”

Gavin thought he was ready.

He wasn’t.

Dr. Marks arranged it.

Neutral office.

No gifts.

No grand declarations.

Reid arrived early.

He looked terrified.

Gavin almost enjoyed that.

Then felt childish.

Mia entered holding Gavin’s hand.

Reid stood.

“Hi, Mia.”

“Hi.”

She looked at him for a long time.

“You knew?”

Reid shook his head.

“Not for sure.”

“Did you think?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you ask?”

Reid looked at Gavin.

Gavin remained silent.

This belonged to Reid.

“Because I was afraid of what the answer would mean.”

Mia frowned.

“Like Mom.”

Reid’s face changed.

“Yes.”

“Everybody was afraid.”

“Yes.”

“Except me.”

Reid’s eyes filled.

“You shouldn’t have been involved at all.”

Mia sat.

“Are you my dad?”

Reid took a breath.

“Biologically, yes.”

Mia looked toward Gavin.

Then back.

“Gavin is my dad.”

Reid nodded immediately.

“Yes.”

Relief crossed Mia’s face.

“Can I call you Reid?”

“Please.”

The meeting lasted twenty-five minutes.

They talked about animals.

School.

Baseball.

Reid did not point out that they had similar eyes.

He did not say:

You’re just like me.

He did not ask for a hug.

At the end Mia hugged him anyway.

Briefly.

Reid cried in the parking lot afterward.

Gavin saw.

He stood several feet away.

Reid wiped his face.

“I don’t know what I’m allowed to feel.”

“Whatever you feel.”

“Doesn’t mean I get anything.”

“No.”

Reid nodded.

“You’ve gotten good at that.”

“Expensive year.”

They almost smiled.

Mia asked for another visit two months later.

Then another.

Slow.

Her pace.

Audrey struggled.

Not because she opposed Reid knowing Mia.

Because she was no longer controlling the relationship.

Dr. Marks named it.

“You confuse losing control with losing your daughter.”

Audrey cried.

“Yes.”

That was the same mistake she had made for years.

Silence felt like safety.

Control felt like love.

Neither was true.

Mia eventually drew another family picture.

Gavin saw four people.

Mia.

Gavin.

Audrey.

Reid off to one side.

Smaller.

Label:

REID — BIO DAD.

Gavin swallowed.

“What do you think?”

Mia asked.

“I think it’s yours.”

She smiled.

Then he noticed no Darlene.

Not crossed out.

Not hidden.

Simply absent.

That mattered too.

Some relationships did not need permanent space just because they once mattered.

Later Mia asked:

“Does Darlene know I met Reid?”

“I don’t know.”

“Would she care?”

“Probably.”

Mia thought.

“I don’t want her to know.”

“Okay.”

“Is that a secret?”

Gavin smiled.

“No.”

“What’s the difference?”

“Privacy is something about your life you get to choose not to share.”

“And secret?”

“Something you’re afraid someone will discover.”

Mia nodded.

“I like privacy better.”

“So do I.”

That evening Gavin realized how much of their healing could be summarized by that distinction.

The old mansion had been full of secrets.

The new house could have privacy.

Closed doors without fear.

May you like

Conversations without leverage.

A child allowed to keep some parts of herself without being forced to carry adults’ lies.
