Chapter 3 - Six Years Were Hidden on One Memory CardGavin did not play the card himself.

He gave it to Detective Lena Shaw.
Not because he lacked curiosity.
Because he had too much.
If the card contained evidence connected to another crime, he wanted a clean record of where it came from and what was on it.
Mia left with Gavin’s sister, Paige, after doctors confirmed no significant physical injury from the dog-food exposure.
The emotional damage would take longer to understand.
Darlene remained with police.
Audrey contacted an attorney.
That hurt Gavin in a strange way.
Not because she should not have one.
Because she knew immediately which lawyer to call.
As if some part of her had rehearsed this day.
Hours later, Detective Shaw sat across from Gavin inside a small interview room.
“We made a forensic copy.”
“And?”
“There are recordings.”
“How many?”
“Hundreds.”
Gavin stared.
“Hundreds?”
“Most appear to be ordinary household audio or conversations.”
“Why would Darlene record everything?”
“Protection, according to her.”
“Protection from Audrey?”
“Yes.”
Gavin leaned back.
“What am I about to hear?”
Shaw pressed play.
Darlene’s voice.
Nine months earlier.
“I’m done letting you talk to me like that.”
Audrey answered:
“Then leave.”
Darlene:
“You know why I don’t.”
Audrey laughed.
“Because you like the money.”
Gavin’s chest tightened.
Darlene said:
“I stayed because you promised it was over.”
Audrey’s voice sharpened.
“It ended years ago.”
“Then why was Reid here last month?”
Gavin stopped breathing.
Shaw watched him.
He lifted one hand.
“Keep playing.”
Audrey:
“You did not see Reid.”
Darlene laughed.
“I opened the side gate for him.”
“You saw nothing.”
“I kept quiet when Mia was born.”
A pause.
Then Audrey:
“Careful.”
Darlene:
“I kept quiet when you paid for the test.”
Gavin’s fingers curled.
Test.
His mind immediately went somewhere he did not want it to go.
Audrey whispered:
“Shut up.”
Darlene continued:
“And I kept quiet when you found out.”
Audrey’s voice dropped.
“If Gavin ever learns who I was with the week Mia was conceived, you lose everything too.”
The recording ended.
Gavin stared at the wall.
“What test?”
Shaw did not answer.
She played another file.
Three months earlier.
Darlene:
“You said Reid was gone.”
Audrey:
“He is.”
“He was upstairs.”
“For fifteen minutes.”
“You think that makes it better?”
Audrey:
“This stopped being your business six years ago.”
Darlene:
“It became my business when you bought my silence.”
Gavin closed his eyes.
Bought my silence.
Audrey answered:
“You took the money.”
Darlene:
“You offered it.”
Audrey:
“And then you asked for more.”
Silence.
Gavin looked at Shaw.
“How much?”
“We’ll get there.”
He hated that answer.
The recording continued.
Darlene:
“Mia deserves better.”
Audrey immediately said:
“Do not say her name.”
“Why?”
“Because she is the only innocent person in this entire house.”
Gavin’s breath caught.
For one second, Audrey sounded exactly like the woman he thought he knew.
Then Darlene asked:
“Does Reid know?”
Audrey:
“No.”
“Does Gavin?”
“No.”
“And Mia?”
Audrey’s voice changed.
“She never will.”
The audio ended.
Gavin stood.
“What test?”
Shaw turned the monitor toward him.
A photograph appeared.
Laboratory letterhead.
Date:
Six years earlier.
Child:
MIA ELLISON.
Tested adult:
REID LAWSON.
Gavin stared.
“No.”
Shaw said:
“We have not independently verified authenticity.”
He barely heard her.
The screen contained one line.
PROBABILITY OF BIOLOGICAL PATERNITY:
99.98%.
Gavin stopped breathing.
“Play the rest.”
“Gavin.”
“Play it.”
Shaw hesitated.
Then opened a recording from yesterday.
Audrey:
“You think that phone protects you?”
Darlene:
“It protects me from you.”
Audrey:
“You’re finished here.”
Darlene:
“Then I tell Gavin.”
A pause.
Audrey’s voice became quiet.
“No, you won’t.”
“Why?”
“Because if Gavin learns the truth about Mia, I’ll make sure he learns what you did too.”
Darlene:
“What I did?”
Audrey:
“The money. The threats. Every payment.”
Silence.
Then Darlene:
“You started this.”
Audrey:
“And you chose to stay.”
The recording clicked off.
Gavin stared at the test again.
Then Shaw said:
“There’s another detail.”
He looked at her.
“Your wife knew the card was in Darlene’s phone.”
“Yes.”
“She also knew Darlene had threatened to expose the test.”
Gavin swallowed.
“Why yesterday?”
“We don’t know.”
But Gavin knew something else.
Reid’s name was not simply sitting on a six-year-old laboratory report.
Recent recordings put him back inside the mansion.
He called Paige.
“How’s Mia?”
“Watching a movie.”
“Did she ask for me?”
“Every ten minutes.”
“I’m coming.”
“What happened?”
“I’ll explain later.”
“Gavin—”
“Please.”
He drove there.
Mia ran into his arms.
“Daddy!”
Gavin held her.
The test flashed in his mind.
99.98%.
He tightened his arms.
Mia was his daughter.
Whatever biology said.
Whatever Audrey had done.
Whatever Reid knew.
His daughter.
Mia looked up.
“Why are you crying?”
“Bad day.”
“Me too.”
That nearly broke him.
Then Paige’s doorbell rang.
She checked the camera.
Her face changed.
“Gavin.”
“What?”
She turned the screen.
Reid Lawson stood outside.
He was holding Mia’s favorite stuffed rabbit.
Mia smiled.
“Uncle Reid!”
Gavin stared at him.
Paige whispered:
“Did you tell him she was here?”
“No.”
“Did Audrey?”
Gavin looked at the camera.
Reid had arrived less than an hour after Gavin learned the test existed.

And somehow—
he knew exactly where Mia was.
