Chapter 5 - The Email Scarlett Never Expected Jonathan to ExplainJonathan opened his laptop.

Evelyn stood on the opposite side of the office desk.

Neither sat.

He searched his email.

Rebecca Shaw.

Dozens of messages appeared.

Company matters.

Employee contracts.

A wrongful-termination threat.

An internal complaint involving a senior manager.

No divorce.

Jonathan opened one.

FROM: REBECCA SHAW

SUBJECT: NEXT STEPS AFTER DISCLOSURE

He turned the screen toward Evelyn.

"This?"

She stared.

"Scarlett showed me that subject line."

"Did she show you the email?"

"No."

"What did she tell you it was?"

Evelyn whispered:

"She said you were preparing to disclose assets."

Jonathan scrolled.

The email discussed legally required disclosures during a workplace investigation.

Nothing marital.

He opened another.

SUBJECT: PROTECTING YOUR POSITION.

Again, company governance.

Not marriage.

Evelyn sat.

Her face had lost color.

"Where did Scarlett get these?"

"Good question."

Jonathan thought.

Scarlett had occasionally worked from their house.

She'd used his office once when her apartment internet failed.

She'd also borrowed Jonathan's laptop during a family trip when hers died.

He had trusted her.

That word again.

"What else did she show you?"

Evelyn looked ashamed.

"A text."

"From who?"

"A woman at work."

"Name?"

"Rachel."

Jonathan stared.

Rachel Ellis.

His executive assistant.

Married.

Forty-one.

Mother of twins.

"What text?"

Evelyn opened her phone.

For a moment Jonathan almost laughed at the absurdity of his cheating wife producing evidence that he might have cheated.

Then he saw the screenshot.

RACHEL: Hotel is confirmed. Same floor as last time.

Jonathan stared.

"Scarlett showed you this?"

Evelyn nodded.

"What did she tell you?"

"That you and Rachel stayed at the same hotel."

"We did."

Evelyn's face hardened defensively.

Jonathan continued.

"With fourteen other people from the company."

He searched.

Found the trip itinerary.

Denver leadership conference.

Rachel had booked the executive team on the same floor.

"Same floor as last time."

He looked at Evelyn.

"Because she's my assistant."

Evelyn stared at the documents.

Jonathan felt anger and sadness mixing.

"Did you ever ask me?"

"I asked if there was someone else."

"When?"

"December."

He remembered.

One evening Evelyn had asked, almost jokingly, whether he'd ever cheat.

Jonathan had laughed.

Then kissed her and said he barely had enough time for the woman he'd married.

He'd thought it was playful insecurity.

He had not understood she was asking a real question.

"You didn't ask about Rachel."

"I felt stupid."

"So you asked Scarlett."

"She was my best friend."

Jonathan looked at her.

"She was mine too."

Evelyn's face crumpled.

Jonathan leaned against the desk.

"When did Scarlett start showing you these things?"

"November."

Before pancake Tuesdays.

Before the emotional affair.

Before the first kiss.

Jonathan's pulse slowed.

"Did she tell you I was unhappy?"

"Yes."

"Based on what?"

"Things you told her."

He frowned.

"What things?"

"That we barely had sex."

Jonathan felt his face heat.

He had said something like that once.

Drunk.

After a guys' poker night where Scarlett had remained because she was part of the friend group.

He'd complained that he and Evelyn were exhausted and disconnected.

One careless private frustration.

Scarlett had carried it directly to Evelyn.

"What else?"

"That you felt trapped."

Jonathan's eyes narrowed.

"I never said that."

"She said you did."

"I didn't."

"She was very specific."

"About Hazel?"

Evelyn looked at him.

Jonathan knew.

"She told you I stayed because of Hazel."

Evelyn began crying.

"Yes."

He turned away.

It was almost elegant.

Scarlett told Evelyn Jonathan was preparing to leave.

Scarlett showed selective emails.

A hotel text.

Private complaints.

Then positioned herself as the person who understood Evelyn.

Jonathan looked back.

"Did Scarlett kiss you first?"

Evelyn hesitated.

"Yes."

"When?"

"January seventeenth."

He remembered the date.

Evelyn had gone to Scarlett's apartment because Scarlett supposedly had a panic attack after her breakup.

"What happened?"

"She kissed me."

"And?"

"I kissed her back."

There it was.

Scarlett may have manipulated.

But Evelyn had still chosen.

Jonathan refused to let one truth erase the other.

"Did she make you continue?"

"No."

"Did she make you lie?"

"No."

"Did she make you bring Hazel to that blue house?"

Evelyn closed her eyes.

"No."

He nodded.

"Good."

She looked up.

"Good?"

"Because I need to understand what belongs to Scarlett and what belongs to you."

Evelyn began crying quietly.

Jonathan felt something close to grief.

"Did you believe I was cheating?"

"At first."

"And after?"

"I wasn't sure."

"But you kept sleeping with her."

"Yes."

"So eventually it stopped being revenge."

Evelyn whispered:

"Yes."

He sat.

There was no satisfying villain now.

Scarlett had manipulated Evelyn.

Evelyn had betrayed Jonathan.

Jonathan had been emotionally absent enough that pieces of the lies sounded believable.

Nobody was innocent in every category.

But only two people had chosen the affair.

The phone on the desk buzzed.

Evelyn looked down.

SCARLETT CALLING.

Jonathan stared.

"Answer."

Evelyn shook her head.

"Jonathan."

"Answer it."

"Why?"

"Because she doesn't know I know about the emails."

Evelyn's eyes widened.

May you like

He looked at the screen.

"For the first time today, I want to hear what Scarlett says when she thinks I'm not listening."
