Chapter 8 - Scarlett Had Put Herself on Hazel's Emergency ListJonathan drove to Hazel's school that afternoon.

Evelyn stayed home with Hazel.

The front-office administrator smiled politely when Jonathan asked to see the emergency-contact form.

Then her expression changed.

"Is something wrong?"

"I need to verify who is authorized to pick up my daughter."

"Of course."

She opened the digital record.

Jonathan leaned closer.

Parents:

Jonathan Harper.

Evelyn Harper.

Emergency contacts:

Eleanor Harper.

Scarlett Monroe.

Jonathan stared.

"When was Scarlett added?"

The administrator clicked.

"January eighth."

"By who?"

"Mrs. Harper."

He closed his eyes.

January eighth.

Nine days before Scarlett kissed Evelyn.

Before the affair supposedly began.

"Has Scarlett picked Hazel up?"

"Twice."

Jonathan looked up.

"Twice?"

"February fifteenth and April fourth."

February fifteenth.

The day after Valentine's Day.

Jonathan had been in Austin for work.

Evelyn had told him Hazel spent the afternoon at a friend's house.

"Do you have the sign-out logs?"

"Yes."

Scarlett's signature appeared.

Jonathan photographed it.

His hands were trembling now.

Not because Scarlett picked up his daughter.

Before the affair, he might have approved it without concern.

Because nobody had told him.

Because the secret relationship had quietly rewritten who had access to his child.

"Please remove Scarlett."

"Of course."

"And nobody gets added without both parents."

The administrator nodded.

"We can flag the account."

"Do that."

As he turned to leave, Ms. Brennan approached.

"Mr. Harper?"

Jonathan forced a smile.

"Hi."

"How is Hazel?"

"Confused."

"I'm sorry."

He almost said Me too.

Instead:

"Can I ask you something?"

"Sure."

"Did Scarlett ever come inside the school?"

Ms. Brennan thought.

"Once."

"When?"

"Maybe February."

"What happened?"

"She attended the end of a class presentation."

Jonathan felt cold.

"With Evelyn?"

"No."

"Alone?"

"I believe so."

"Did Hazel introduce her?"

"Yes."

"As what?"

The counselor hesitated.

"Aunt Scarlett."

Jonathan nodded.

That nickname had once been innocent.

Now it seemed like a disguise everyone could accept.

Ms. Brennan continued:

"Hazel seemed happy she was there."

Jonathan hated himself for feeling jealousy.

This wasn't Hazel's betrayal.

She had loved an adult who treated her kindly.

Children didn't understand sexual loyalty or marital boundaries.

Scarlett had been safe to her.

Until the adults made her unsafe emotionally.

Jonathan returned home.

Evelyn was sitting on the couch.

Hazel was upstairs.

"Twice."

Evelyn knew immediately.

"Jonathan—"

"Scarlett picked up Hazel twice."

"Yes."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"I didn't think it mattered."

He laughed.

"That's impossible."

"Before anything happened between us, you trusted Scarlett."

"Correct."

"So I added her."

"Then why didn't I know?"

"You never asked."

He stared.

"Do not use that."

Evelyn looked down.

Jonathan sat opposite her.

"She attended a school presentation."

Evelyn frowned.

"I didn't know that."

Now Jonathan saw genuine surprise.

"Scarlett never told you?"

"No."

"Interesting."

Evelyn looked worried.

"What?"

"She was getting closer to Hazel independently."

"She loves Hazel."

Jonathan stared.

"That's exactly what I'm afraid of."

Evelyn's expression hardened.

"Scarlett would never hurt her."

"I'm not talking about physical harm."

"What, then?"

"Attachment."

Evelyn went quiet.

Jonathan continued.

"She was building a role in Hazel's life while also trying to convince you I'd leave."

Evelyn shook her head.

"You make it sound calculated."

"Was it?"

"I don't know."

"Neither do I."

That was the problem.

Scarlett had been around so long that every gesture could be interpreted two ways.

Kindness.

Or positioning.

Love.

Or strategy.

Jonathan rubbed his face.

"Did Scarlett ever talk about being Hazel's stepmother?"

Evelyn froze.

He saw the answer.

"When?"

"Once."

"What did she say?"

"She joked."

"Tell me."

Evelyn looked ashamed.

"She said one day Hazel might stop calling her Aunt Scarlett and start calling her bonus mom."

Jonathan stood.

"Jesus Christ."

"It was a joke."

"Was Hazel there?"

"No."

"Did you tell her to stop?"

Evelyn didn't answer.

Jonathan looked at her.

"Did you like it?"

Tears filled Evelyn's eyes.

"Part of me did."

He nodded.

Truth.

Painful, but truth.

"What part?"

"The part that imagined a life where I wasn't hiding."

Jonathan's anger shifted.

"Hiding what?"

Evelyn looked at him.

For the first time, the conversation moved somewhere deeper than Scarlett.

"I've known I was attracted to women since college."

Jonathan stopped.

Evelyn continued quietly.

"I never told you."

He sat again.

"Did you know before we married?"

"Yes."

Jonathan felt a new kind of betrayal.

Not because she was attracted to women.

Because she'd hidden an important part of herself for eleven years.

"Why?"

"I thought it didn't matter."

"Because you loved me."

"Yes."

"Do you?"

"Yes."

"Then why does it matter now?"

Evelyn wiped her face.

"Because I spent years convincing myself that choosing you meant that part of me wasn't real."

Jonathan stayed silent.

"And then Scarlett..."

She stopped.

"Made it real."

Evelyn nodded.

Jonathan understood something without forgiving anything.

The affair wasn't simply desire for one person.

It had become tangled with identity.

Freedom.

Fear.

Scarlett had represented a part of Evelyn she had buried.

That made the affair emotionally powerful.

It did not make it honest.

"You could have told me."

"I was terrified."

"Of me?"

"Of what telling you would change."

Jonathan looked away.

"It changed more because you didn't."

"I know."

Her voice broke.

Jonathan sat in silence.

Then Evelyn's phone buzzed.

A message from Scarlett.

Evelyn glanced down.

Her face changed.

Jonathan noticed.

"What?"

She hesitated.

Then handed him the phone.

SCARLETT: I went by the blue house. The landlord says if we don't sign the final lease tomorrow, we lose it.

Jonathan stared.

Not yesterday.

Tomorrow.

May you like

The life built without him still had a deadline.

And Evelyn now had to decide whether she was willing to let it disappear.
