Chapter 18 - Adrian Finally Lost Control of the RoomAdrian entered without waiting to be invited.

Preston followed.
Katherine stood.
"You cannot enter a private conference room without permission."
Adrian ignored her.
He looked at his mother.
"What are you doing?"
Margaret sat straighter.
"Talking."
"About what?"
"Things I should've talked about years ago."
Adrian's face changed.
"Mom."
"No."
The word surprised him.
Rosalie watched.
Margaret continued:
"You told me Rosalie knew about Northstar."
"She did."
Rosalie said:
"No."
Adrian looked at her.
"You benefited from it."
"That's not consent."
"You signed—"
"Which signature?"
He stopped.
Rosalie stood.
"The lake house?"
Silence.
"The life-insurance policy?"
Silence.
"The dilution consent?"
Silence.
"The Northstar transfers?"
Adrian's jaw tightened.
"You're combining unrelated transactions."
"Because they're all unrelated?"
Katherine said:
"Mr. Mercer, from this point forward, direct substantive legal communications through counsel."
Preston stepped in.
"Agreed."
Adrian turned.
"No."
His attorney blinked.
Adrian looked at Rosalie.
"I want to talk to my wife."
Rosalie answered:
"You should've done that two years ago."
Pain crossed his face.
Real.
She saw it.
And still didn't move.
"Rosalie, I messed up."
"Which part?"
"Sienna."
"That's the part you're willing to call a mistake."
"All of it."
"Did you forge my signature?"
Adrian looked toward Katherine.
Rosalie laughed.
"Now you want a lawyer."
Preston said:
"Adrian, don't answer."
Margaret stood.
"Answer her."
Adrian's eyes flashed.
"Mom, stay out of this."
"No."
Again.
Margaret stepped closer to her son.
"You used my name for ten years."
"I built value for you."
"You used my name."
"I made you millions."
"With whose money?"
Adrian went silent.
Margaret looked at Rosalie.
"Exactly."
Preston tried again.
"We should end this meeting."
Rosalie said:
"No one asked you to come."
Adrian looked exhausted now.
"I was trying to save Blackwell."
"By destroying my ownership."
"By separating viable assets."
"For you."
"For our family."
"Sienna was your family?"
He flinched.
"That isn't fair."
"Stop asking betrayal to be evaluated fairly."
Silence.
Rosalie moved closer.
"When did you first decide you'd divorce me?"
Adrian looked away.
"Answer."
"Last year."
"Before or after proposing to Sienna?"
"Before."
"Before or after the lake house mortgage?"
His face changed.
There.
Rosalie saw it.
"Before."
She almost laughed.
"So you borrowed against my separate property after deciding to leave me."
"I intended to repay everything before filing."
"With Aster Ridge money."
"Yes."
"Aster Ridge money generated partly by Blackwell clients."
"New contracts."
"From relationships built inside Blackwell."
Adrian's voice rose.
"I built those relationships."
Rosalie held his gaze.
"And I funded the company that gave you the platform."
He stopped.
For the first time, she said it plainly.
Not family support.
Not help.
Not marital money.
"I funded it."
Adrian stared.
"My grandmother's money kept Blackwell alive."
"That was eight years ago."
"And therefore it stopped mattering?"
"No."
"You just spent years acting like it did."
Margaret looked at her son.
"She's right."
Adrian laughed bitterly.
"Of course everyone is with Rosalie now."
Katherine said nothing.
Margaret did.
"This isn't about teams."
"Really?"
Adrian pointed toward Rosalie.
"She has my former controller. My former partner. My assistant. My mother."
Rosalie answered quietly:
"Have you considered why?"
That landed.
He looked at her.
Nobody spoke.
Then Preston's phone vibrated.
He read something.
His face changed.
"Adrian."
"What?"
"We need to leave."
"Why?"
Preston stepped closer.
"The lender filed notice."
Rosalie frowned.
"What lender?"
"The lake house mortgage."
Katherine immediately stood.
"What notice?"
Preston looked at Rosalie.
"Payment default."
Her blood ran cold.
"Payments came from Blackwell."
Adrian turned pale.
Rosalie understood.
The company was failing faster than he'd admitted.
"If the mortgage is in default—"
Katherine finished.
"The lender may accelerate."
Adrian looked at Rosalie.
"I can fix it."
She stared.
"With what?"
Silence.
And suddenly the entire structure became visible.
Adrian hadn't just stolen to build a new future.
He'd been using new money to keep old lies alive.
May you like
Now the money had stopped.
And everything was falling at once.
