Chapter 20 - Adrian Finally Admitted What He Believed Marriage Allowed Him to TakeThe emergency corporate meeting occurred the following Monday.

Connor attended remotely.

Daniel appeared with counsel.

Margaret waived any claim that Northstar's money originated solely from her.

Sienna provided the Ridge files through her attorney.

Rosalie sat across from Adrian.

This time, nobody was hiding in a closet.

A forensic accountant presented the preliminary tracing.

Rosalie's inheritance.

Northstar.

Blackwell rescue capital.

Lake house proceeds.

Aster Ridge.

Related-party contracts.

Adrian's attorney objected repeatedly.

The numbers kept moving.

At the end, the independent director asked Adrian:

"Did Mrs. Mercer knowingly authorize the lake house loan?"

Adrian looked at Rosalie.

"No."

The room became completely still.

Preston closed his eyes.

Adrian continued.

"I believed she would have."

Rosalie felt no satisfaction.

Just exhaustion.

The director asked:

"Did you apply her signature?"

"I directed staff to complete documents."

"Without her authorization?"

"Yes."

"Did you attempt to dilute her ownership?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because Blackwell needed restructuring."

"Did the restructuring advantage you personally?"

Adrian looked at Sienna.

Then at Rosalie.

"Yes."

One word.

Years of deception reduced to one syllable.

The meeting ended with Adrian placed on administrative leave pending investigation.

Aster Ridge accounts frozen.

Blackwell's lenders entered restructuring negotiations rather than immediate enforcement after Connor agreed to assist with governance.

Rosalie's restoration clause was triggered for review.

Not automatic victory.

But enough to prevent Adrian from moving anything else.

Outside the conference room, Rosalie found him alone.

He looked at her.

"You got what you wanted."

"No."

"What else?"

She stared.

"You still think this is about winning."

"What is it about?"

"Understanding."

Adrian laughed bitterly.

"You understand enough."

"No."

She stepped closer.

"I want to understand how you looked at me every morning knowing what you were doing."

He looked away.

"How did you show me that necklace?"

Silence.

"How did you kiss Lily goodnight?"

"Don't bring her into this."

"You did."

His face tightened.

"How did you sit across from my father while he was dying?"

That struck.

Frank had died at home.

Adrian held one side of the hospice bed while Rosalie held the other.

Her father had known enough to leave a warning letter.

Adrian had known Frank distrusted him.

Still, he'd cried at the funeral.

Maybe genuinely.

People were complicated enough to grieve men they betrayed.

Adrian whispered:

"I didn't think of it the way you do."

"Then how?"

He finally looked at her.

"I thought everything was ours."

Rosalie frowned.

"What?"

"Your money. Mine. The company. Property. Future income."

"Everything except your girlfriend apparently."

He flinched.

"I believed marriage meant we were building one life."

"So you could use my inheritance without asking."

"I was building value."

"For yourself."

"For us at first."

"At first."

There.

Honesty.

Adrian sat on the hallway bench.

"When Blackwell started failing, I panicked."

"Then you met Sienna."

"No."

He shook his head.

"I started planning Ridge before Sienna."

"I know."

"I thought if I could move the good business out, I could rebuild."

"And me?"

"You stopped feeling like part of that future."

The sentence hurt.

Rosalie waited.

Adrian continued.

"You were happy with Lily. The house. Family."

"I thought you were too."

"I was."

"Then?"

"I wanted more."

"More what?"

He laughed weakly.

"Everything."

At least that was true.

Sienna hadn't caused him to become disloyal.

She simply fit into an appetite that already existed.

Rosalie sat across from him.

"Did you ever plan to tell me the truth?"

"Eventually."

"About Sienna?"

"Yes."

"About the money?"

He hesitated.

"No."

Rosalie nodded.

That was the answer she needed.

Not because it changed the legal case.

Because it ended the emotional argument.

He hadn't made one terrible mistake.

He'd built a system dependent on Rosalie never knowing.

Adrian looked at her.

"Do you hate me?"

"No."

He seemed surprised.

"I wish I did."

"Why?"

"Because hate would be easier."

His eyes filled.

For the first time, Rosalie saw him cry.

Not performatively.

Quietly.

She felt grief.

Not temptation.

Adrian whispered:

"I love you."

Rosalie nodded.

"I know."

"Does that mean anything?"

"Yes."

He looked hopeful for half a second.

Then she continued:

"It means love wasn't enough to stop you."

The hope disappeared.

Rosalie stood.

"My attorney will handle the divorce."

He closed his eyes.

"Lily?"

"You are her father."

He looked up.

"I'm not taking that away from her."

Relief moved through him.

"But you will never use her to create a story about me again."

"I won't."

"If you do, everything Sienna saved goes into the custody record."

Adrian nodded.

Rosalie walked away.

Then he called her name.

She stopped.

"Was the necklace ever for me?"

Adrian's face broke.

He shook his head.

"No."

Rosalie expected pain.

Instead, she felt something close to freedom.

May you like

Because finally—

one question had received an answer without a lie.
