Chapter 19 - Sienna Brought the One File Adrian Thought She DeletedTwo days later, Sienna called Rosalie.

"I found it."

Rosalie was in Katherine's office reviewing lender options.

"Found what?"

"The Ridge master file."

Rosalie sat straighter.

"I thought Adrian deleted it."

"He deleted the shared copy."

"Where was this?"

"My personal backup."

"Why did you keep it?"

Sienna hesitated.

"Because six months ago I stopped trusting him."

That surprised Rosalie.

"Before the proposal?"

"Yes."

"Then why accept?"

Sienna gave a sad laugh.

"Because people do stupid things when the answer they want is easier than the answer they know."

Rosalie understood more than she wanted to.

Sienna arrived with a laptop.

The file contained Aster Ridge's internal projections.

Client transfers.

Capital sources.

Ownership scenarios.

Then a folder:

POST-DISSOLUTION

Rosalie opened it.

A chart.

After Adrian's divorce, Aster Ridge would merge with Mercer Strategic and acquire selected Blackwell contracts.

Projected ownership:

Adrian Mercer — 54%

Sienna Blake — 26%

Northstar Ventures — 20%

Rosalie stared.

Northstar.

Adrian's mother nominally owned it.

But Adrian had planned to transfer it to Sienna.

If successful, Sienna would effectively control forty-six percent.

"Did you know?"

Sienna stared at the chart.

"Not the Northstar part."

"So he was going to give you almost half."

"I guess."

"Why?"

Sienna shook her head.

"I don't know."

Rosalie studied her.

Maybe love.

Maybe control.

Maybe Adrian wanted someone dependent enough to replace a wife who had independent assets and questions.

Then she saw another worksheet.

R.M. SETTLEMENT MODEL

Rosalie opened it.

Adrian had modeled divorce outcomes.

House.

Support.

Custody.

Equity.

He had projected Rosalie would receive between $2.1 million and $3.4 million.

A large amount.

Enough that outsiders might think her fortunate.

But the model assumed her Blackwell interest was worth almost nothing due to debt.

Meanwhile, Aster Ridge's projected value after receiving transferred contracts exceeded $38 million.

Rosalie felt sick.

He wasn't planning to leave her destitute.

That was more sophisticated.

He planned to leave her comfortable enough not to fight.

Sienna whispered:

"I didn't know this file existed."

Rosalie kept scrolling.

Then found a note.

Target timing: after R.M. 39th birthday.

Rosalie frowned.

"Why my thirty-ninth birthday?"

Sienna didn't know.

Katherine looked over.

"Trust?"

Rosalie thought.

Her grandmother's estate.

Lake house.

Investment.

Then remembered something.

A deferred family trust established by her father.

At thirty-nine, Rosalie would gain sole control over additional assets currently managed by a bank trustee.

Approximately $4 million.

Adrian knew.

Of course he knew.

If he divorced before then, those assets stayed clearly separate.

If he waited until after Rosalie controlled them, perhaps he believed he could convince her to invest more.

Or leverage them.

Katherine studied the timing.

"He may have planned to move before your birthday but file after?"

Sienna pointed.

"Look."

Another note.

Secure bridge collateral before trustee release.

Rosalie's stomach turned.

He planned to borrow against assets before she gained direct control?

How?

Then she found correspondence with Preston Vale.

Once Rosalie becomes sole trustee, we lose practical access unless she voluntarily signs. Better to complete all guarantor packages beforehand.

Rosalie stared.

Adrian's plan depended on using her signatures while he could still frame paperwork as routine.

Her thirty-ninth birthday wasn't romantic.

It was a deadline.

The necklace he showed her?

A distraction.

A performance of intimacy while he raced to finish the financial extraction.

Sienna covered her mouth.

"The birthday dinner."

"What?"

"He told me we couldn't be seen together around your birthday."

"Why?"

"He said he needed to make things look normal."

Rosalie almost laughed.

There it was.

The gift.

The dinner.

The sudden shopping suggestion when she came home.

Normal.

Maintain the picture until the documents were finished.

Katherine printed the file index.

"This changes the civil case significantly."

Rosalie barely heard.

She opened one last folder.

LILY

Her heart stopped.

"Why is my daughter's name here?"

Sienna looked horrified.

Rosalie clicked.

College trust.

Custodial assets.

A proposal to borrow temporarily against a family investment account.

Katherine's voice sharpened.

"Stop."

Rosalie looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because if Adrian used or attempted to use custodial assets improperly, we need forensic review before anyone interprets this."

Rosalie nodded.

But she'd already seen enough.

One line:

Short-term liquidity only. Replace after Ridge close.

Adrian had considered using Lily's money too.

Maybe temporarily.

Maybe intending repayment.

Always an explanation.

Always later.

Rosalie closed the laptop.

For the first time, the affair felt almost secondary.

Sienna looked at her.

"What are you going to do?"

Rosalie answered:

"Exactly what my father told me."

May you like

"What?"

"Read the paperwork."
