Chapter 14 - The Recording Robert Could Never Let Anyone HearRobert had Claire’s phone.

That explained the break-in.

The missing boxes.

The years of deleted security footage.

He was looking for backups.

He did not know Claire had hidden evidence in Noah’s old lunchbox and safe-deposit box.

But somewhere on Claire’s phone might be the one recording that proved what happened after the crash.

Police upgraded the search for Robert.

His photograph appeared on local news.

His accounts were frozen.

Airports alerted.

Daniel stayed home with Noah.

For the first time in days, father and son spent an entire afternoon doing nothing connected to police.

They built a Lego spaceship.

Ordered pizza.

Watched a movie.

Halfway through, Noah looked at him.

“Is Grandma bad?”

Daniel paused the movie.

“What makes you ask?”

“People keep saying she did bad things.”

Daniel chose his words carefully.

“Grandma made very serious choices that hurt people.”

“Does that make her bad?”

Daniel thought about Claire’s letter.

People can love you and still do things that hurt you.

“I think people are more complicated than one word.”

Noah frowned.

“Did she love me?”

Daniel’s throat tightened.

“Yes.”

“Then why did she lock me up?”

There was no answer that could make sense to an eight-year-old.

“Because sometimes people care about what they want so much that they stop seeing how much they’re hurting someone.”

Noah considered that.

“That’s stupid.”

Daniel almost laughed.

“Yes.”

“It’s really stupid.”

“Yes.”

Later that night, Rebecca called.

Police had found Robert’s storage unit.

Inside were fake passports, financial records, cash, and several old phones.

One belonged to Claire.

Daniel drove to the police lab the next morning.

The phone was damaged.

But technicians recovered audio files.

One had been recorded from Claire’s hospital room.

Daniel listened with Detective Torres.

Claire’s breathing was strained.

Robert’s voice entered.

“You should never have confronted Linda.”

Claire whispered:

“She didn’t cut the line.”

Robert:

“No.”

Claire:

“You did.”

Silence.

Daniel gripped the table.

Claire continued:

“Linda asked you to scare me.”

Robert said nothing.

“You wanted me dead.”

“No.”

“You opened it farther.”

Robert’s voice lowered.

“You were becoming a problem.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

There.

Intent.

Not accidental escalation.

Robert had deliberately increased the damage.

Claire whispered:

“Daniel will find out.”

Robert laughed softly.

“Daniel still believes his mother’s story about his father.”

Daniel felt shame burn through him.

Claire answered:

“He won’t forever.”

“He will after you’re gone.”

Then Claire said something that made Daniel’s eyes fill.

“You don’t know my husband.”

Robert replied:

“I know him better than you think.”

Claire:

“No. You know the boy Linda raised.”

A pause.

“I know the man he became.”

Daniel lowered his head.

Even dying, Claire had believed he would eventually see the truth.

The recording continued.

Robert:

“Where are the copies?”

Claire laughed weakly.

“You’ll never find them.”

“Where?”

“My son will.”

Robert’s breathing changed.

“Noah?”

Claire did not answer.

Robert moved closer.

“What did you give Noah?”

Claire whispered:

“Nothing you’d ever notice.”

The lunchbox.

A child’s forgotten lunchbox.

Robert swore.

Then footsteps approached.

The recording stopped.

Detective Torres looked at Daniel.

“This is major evidence.”

Daniel nodded.

But one question remained.

Why had Robert kept the phone instead of destroying it?

They found the answer in another file.

A recording made accidentally three days after Claire died.

Robert and Linda were arguing.

Linda:

“You killed her.”

Robert:

“You asked me to stop her.”

“I said scare her!”

“And now she’s stopped.”

“You’re sick.”

“You’re involved.”

“No.”

“You signed the transfers. You brought me the car key. You knew.”

Linda began crying.

Robert continued:

“If I go down, so do you.”

There it was.

Blackmail.

Robert kept Claire’s phone because the recording allowed him to control Linda.

For three years, she had obeyed.

Moved money.

Forged documents.

Helped him search for Claire’s evidence.

And finally agreed to lock Noah inside a room.

Robert had built an entire criminal partnership around mutual guilt.

But Linda had still made every choice herself.

Daniel refused to let her hide behind Robert.

Then Torres received a call.

Her expression changed.

“What?”

She listened.

Then looked at Daniel.

“We found Robert.”

Daniel stood.

“Where?”

“He called emergency services himself.”

“Why?”

“He says he wants to surrender.”

Daniel frowned.

After weeks of running?

“Where is he?”

Torres hesitated.

“Outside your house.”

May you like

Daniel’s blood turned cold.

Noah was there with Megan.
