Chapter 9 - Why Robert Needed Daniel to Lose His SonDaniel flew to Nevada alone.

He hated leaving Noah again.
But this time Noah stayed with Megan, two police officers had Daniel’s property under watch, and Daniel video-called his son from the airport, the plane, and the rental car.
“You’re really coming back tomorrow?” Noah asked.
“Yes.”
“Promise?”
“Promise.”
David lived in a modest ranch house twenty minutes outside Reno.
When Daniel saw his father standing in the doorway, anger and grief collided inside him.
David opened his arms.
Daniel didn’t move.
His father let them fall.
“I understand.”
Daniel walked inside.
There were photographs everywhere.
David with another woman.
Two teenage girls.
A whole life Daniel had never known.
“You have daughters.”
David nodded.
“Your half-sisters.”
Daniel looked away.
He wasn’t ready.
David brought out a fireproof box.
Inside were Claire’s documents.
The letter was sealed.
Daniel recognized her handwriting.
For Daniel.
His fingers shook as he opened it.
Daniel,
If you’re reading this because I’m gone, I need you to hear me without defending anyone.
Your mother has been stealing from Noah.
Robert has been helping her hide it.
But I think something bigger is happening.
Daniel stopped.
Bigger.
Claire continued:
Robert keeps pushing Linda to move money faster. I think she believes they are partners. They are not.
Daniel looked at David.
“Did you read this?”
“No.”
He continued.
I found documents showing Robert has been taking money from accounts Linda never knew existed.
He is using her theft to hide his own.
Daniel felt the truth emerge.
Linda had stolen millions.
But Robert had stolen more.
Claire estimated six to nine million dollars over twenty years.
Robert’s system was brilliant.
He allowed Linda to believe they were jointly manipulating family accounts.
When irregularities appeared, records pointed toward Linda.
She became his built-in scapegoat.
Claire wrote:
If Linda is caught, Robert survives.
If I expose Robert, everything collapses.
I think he knows I know.
Daniel stopped reading.
Claire had not been targeted only because Linda wanted to frighten her.
Robert had needed her silent.
Linda may have ordered the warning.
Robert had transformed it into something more dangerous.
Daniel finished the letter.
There was one final paragraph.
If anything happens to me, protect Noah first. Not the money. Noah. Money makes people tell themselves terrible things are necessary.
Daniel pressed the letter to his chest.
David looked away.
For several minutes, neither spoke.
Then Rebecca called.
“Daniel, we found why Robert needed the custody setup.”
Daniel put her on speaker.
She had uncovered a provision in Noah’s trust.
If Daniel became legally unfit and Linda assumed temporary guardianship, a secondary financial trustee would automatically activate until the court completed review.
“Who?” Daniel asked.
“Robert Lang.”
Daniel understood instantly.
Linda thought she would control Noah’s fortune.
But during the transition period, Robert would gain unrestricted administrative access.
“How much could he move?”
“Potentially everything.”
Daniel stood.
“So he convinced Linda to frame me.”
“Yes.”
“Then once she became guardian, he planned to empty the trust.”
“Probably.”
“And blame her.”
“Exactly.”
Daniel thought of Linda’s fear when he reached for the camera.
She wasn’t only afraid of being exposed.
She may not have understood the entire scheme.
For the first time, Daniel saw a fracture between the two conspirators.
That fracture could be useful.
Rebecca continued:
“There’s more.”
Daniel almost laughed.
“There’s always more.”
“I located Robert’s offshore transfers.”
“How much?”
“Approximately fourteen million dollars.”
David whistled softly.
Daniel’s face hardened.
“He stole from my family for decades.”
“Yes.”
“And Claire found it.”
“Yes.”
“Where is he?”
“We don’t know.”
Daniel looked toward the fireproof box.
Then he noticed another envelope beneath Claire’s records.
No name.
He opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
Robert standing beside Linda.
Much younger.
Approximately thirty years earlier.
Their arms around each other.
Not professional.
Intimate.
Daniel stared.
David’s expression changed.
“You didn’t know?”
Daniel looked up.
“Know what?”
David sat slowly.
“Robert and Linda were having an affair before I left.”
Daniel felt the floor disappear beneath another part of his childhood.
“How long?”
“Years.”
Daniel’s mind went to every holiday Robert attended.
Every family funeral.
Every legal meeting.
Every time Linda called him “an old family friend.”
David continued:
“I always wondered if that was why she chose him over me.”
Daniel stared at the picture.
“Chose him for what?”
“To help destroy me.”
Daniel looked again at Robert’s younger face.
Then his own.
Same dark eyes?
No.
That was paranoia.
It had to be.
But David saw where his mind went.
“No,” David said immediately.
Daniel looked at him.
“What?”
“I had a DNA test done years ago.”
Daniel froze.
David gave a sad smile.
“You’re my son.”
Daniel exhaled.
One nightmare eliminated.
Then David’s face became serious.
“But Robert has another connection to your family.”
Daniel waited.
David pointed toward Claire’s letter.
“He wasn’t only protecting stolen money.”
“What else?”
David answered:
“He was protecting Linda.”
“From what?”
David’s voice dropped.
“From what happened to your sister.”
Daniel went completely still.
“I don’t have a sister.”
David looked at him with deep sadness.
May you like
“Yes, Daniel.”
“You did.”
