Chapter 2 - What the Camera Recorded After the Door ClosedDaniel forgot to breathe.

On the phone screen, yesterday continued to happen.
Noah stumbled into the guest room.
He turned immediately.
“Grandma!”
Linda stood in the doorway.
Robert remained several feet behind her.
“Noah,” Linda said, “you need to stay here for a little while.”
“I didn’t do anything.”
“I know.”
“I want to call Dad.”
Linda’s expression hardened.
“You cannot call your father.”
Daniel looked at the real Linda standing only feet away from him.
She had stopped trying to explain.
On the recording, Noah reached for the door.
Linda blocked him.
“What were those papers?” Noah asked.
Robert looked sharply at Linda.
She replied:
“Adult business.”
“They had Dad’s name.”
“Enough.”
“And Mom’s picture.”
Daniel’s stomach tightened.
Claire.
His wife had died three years earlier in a car accident on a rain-soaked highway outside Albany.
Noah had been five.
Daniel had never remarried.
He had barely learned how to breathe normally again.
Why would Robert have papers with Claire’s photograph?
On-screen, Noah asked:
“Why did that paper say Dad hurt me?”
Daniel froze.
Beside him, the real Robert wasn’t there to answer.
Linda was.
Daniel turned.
“What paper?”
Linda whispered:
“You don’t understand.”
He looked back at the recording.
Robert spoke.
“The boy saw too much.”
Linda snapped:
“He’s eight years old.”
“He can read.”
Daniel’s hand tightened around the phone.
Noah began crying.
“I’m telling Dad.”
Robert stepped toward him.
Linda stopped Robert with one arm.
“I’ll handle him.”
Then she crouched in front of Noah.
“If you tell your father what you saw, you could lose him.”
Noah’s crying stopped.
“What?”
Linda lowered her voice.
“There are people who think your dad isn’t taking care of you properly.”
“That’s not true.”
“I know. But adults can lie.”
Daniel almost laughed at the cruelty of the sentence.
Linda continued:
“If those people think your father is dangerous, they can take you away from him.”
Noah’s face crumpled.
“I don’t want to leave Dad.”
“Then stay here and keep quiet.”
Daniel paused the recording.
He stared at Linda.
“You told my son he would lose me if he talked?”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Daniel, please.”
“About what?”
“It wasn’t supposed to happen like this.”
“What wasn’t?”
Linda looked toward Noah.
Daniel immediately stepped between them.
“Look at me.”
She did.
“What are those papers?”
Linda remained silent.
Daniel held up the phone.
“I have you on video.”
“You have part of it.”
“Then give me the rest.”
She said nothing.
Daniel resumed playback.
Linda guided Noah farther into the room.
His lunchbox slipped from his hand and landed near the corner.
“Can I have dinner later?” Noah asked.
Linda hesitated.
Robert answered first.
“No.”
Linda turned sharply.
“He needs to eat.”
“If he’s comfortable, he’ll keep trying the door.”
Daniel felt rage rise through his chest.
Linda said:
“We’re not starving him.”
Robert looked directly toward the hallway camera.
His face changed.
He noticed it.
Daniel saw the exact second.
Robert stared upward.
“Linda.”
“What?”
“The camera.”
Linda followed his gaze.
Her eyes widened.
The recording abruptly ended.
Daniel frowned.
“That’s it?”
He checked the timeline.
The camera went offline at 4:23 p.m.
It came back online at 11:48 that night.
Nearly eight hours missing.
Daniel stared at Linda.
“You shut it off.”
“No.”
“Robert did?”
She looked away.
“Where is he?”
“I don’t know.”
“You brought him into my home.”
“He asked to speak privately.”
“About Claire?”
Linda’s head snapped toward him.
Daniel caught it.
There.
Another involuntary reaction.
He stepped closer.
“What does Robert have about Claire?”
“Nothing.”
“Noah saw her picture.”
“It was old estate paperwork.”
“Why did it say I hurt my son?”
Linda rubbed her forehead.
“Daniel, you need to calm down.”
“Do not tell me to calm down.”
Noah squeezed Daniel’s hand.
Daniel looked down and forced himself to soften.
“Buddy, I’m going to get you something to eat.”
“No.”
Noah clung tighter.
“Don’t leave me.”
Daniel’s anger turned instantly into pain.
“I’m not leaving.”
He pulled out his phone again.
This time he dialed 911.
Linda’s eyes widened.
“What are you doing?”
“Calling the police.”
“Daniel.”
“My son was imprisoned in his own home.”
“You’re going to destroy this family.”
Daniel looked at her.
“No.”
His voice was quiet.
“Whatever you and Robert were doing already did that.”
Linda stepped backward.
The 911 operator answered.
Daniel began explaining.
While he spoke, Noah suddenly whispered:
“Dad.”
Daniel covered the microphone.
“What?”
“There was more.”
“What do you mean?”
“After Grandma turned the camera off.”
Noah looked toward Linda.
She went still.
The boy’s voice dropped.
“They came back to the door.”
Daniel crouched.
“What did they say?”
Noah swallowed.
“I heard Mr. Robert ask Grandma if she was sure the plan would work.”
Daniel’s skin prickled.
“What plan?”
Noah looked confused.
“I don’t know.”
“Try to remember.”
Noah closed his eyes.
Then he repeated the words slowly.
“He said, ‘When they find him tomorrow, Daniel won’t have a chance.’”
Daniel felt the blood drain from his face.
Linda whispered:
“Noah, stop.”
Daniel turned toward her.
But Noah wasn’t finished.
“Then Grandma said…”
His voice shook.
“She said, ‘It worked with Claire.’”
The 911 operator was still speaking from Daniel’s phone.
Daniel didn’t hear her anymore.
He stared at his mother.
May you like
Claire had died three years ago.
And somehow the woman standing in front of him had just been connected to her name again.
