Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN UNDER THE HOSEBy the time the police sirens reached the gates of the Delaney mansion, Ruth Delaney was already soaked through.

Water ran from her silver hair, down the old floral nightgown she had been wearing since morning, and into her cream trousers and house slippers.

She stood in the center of the stone courtyard with both hands raised near her face.

“Please… stop…”

Bianca Delaney lowered the green garden hose.

The look on her face was not anger.

Anger would have been easier for Ruth to understand.

It was contempt.

“You should have thought about that before making that room disgusting again.”

Ruth trembled.

“I couldn’t get to the bathroom.”

“You always have an excuse.”

The mansion door opened.

Calvin stepped outside wearing a black suit and gray shirt.

Ruth’s eyes immediately found her son.

For one desperate second, relief appeared.

“Calvin…”

He saw everything.

His seventy-four-year-old mother drenched in the courtyard.

His wife standing beside a hose.

Water pooling around Ruth’s slippers.

And yet Calvin’s face barely changed.

Ruth whispered:

“Please.”

Then, more quietly:

“I promise I won’t do it again.”

Calvin looked toward the upstairs bedroom.

“Do you know how that room smells now?”

Ruth lowered her head.

That was when something inside her seemed to collapse.

Bianca folded her arms.

Smiled.

Then—

SIRENS.

Bianca’s smile vanished.

Calvin turned toward the tall iron gates.

“What the hell?”

Red and blue light flashed beyond them.

The gates opened.

A Beverly Hills police cruiser entered the driveway.

Two officers stepped out.

One man.

One woman.

The female officer looked directly at Calvin and Bianca.

“Calvin Delaney. Bianca Delaney. Stay where you are.”

Calvin stared.

“Excuse me?”

The officers approached calmly.

Within seconds, Calvin’s hands were behind his back.

Bianca’s too.

Neither resisted.

The female officer said:

“You’re both under arrest in connection with suspected elder abuse.”

Bianca stopped breathing.

Calvin’s face turned pale.

“What?”

He looked toward Ruth.

“You called the police?”

Ruth seemed more confused than he was.

The female officer shook her head.

“It wasn’t your mother.”

Calvin looked toward the mansion.

A curtain moved in Ruth’s upstairs bedroom.

Someone stood behind it.

A woman.

Calvin stared.

Then the figure stepped forward.

His face changed completely.

“No…”

Ruth looked up.

Her lips parted.

The woman behind the glass lifted a phone.

Still recording.

Calvin whispered her name.

“Evelyn?”

Ruth began crying.

Not from the water.

Not from humiliation.

From recognition.

Her daughter had come home.

And Calvin suddenly understood something Bianca did not.

If Evelyn was standing inside that bedroom—

then she had seen what they had done.
