Chapter 12 - THE WOMAN ACROSS THE STREETMargaret Keats had watched the Delaney mansion for years.

Not nosy, she insisted.

Then admitted maybe a little.

Retired judge.

Seventy.

Lives alone.

She noticed Ruth after move.

At first Ruth waved from courtyard.

Later stopped appearing.

One afternoon Margaret saw Ruth at gate with suitcase.

She crossed street.

“Going somewhere?”

Ruth smiled nervously.

“My daughter’s.”

Before further, Calvin’s car entered.

He got out.

“Mom.”

His tone sharp.

Ruth looked down.

Calvin apologized to Margaret.

“Mom gets confused.”

Margaret said:

“She seems clear.”

Calvin smiled.

“Good days.”

Then he took suitcase.

Ruth whispered:

“Tell Evelyn I tried.”

Margaret heard.

She later searched Evelyn online but did not contact because unsure.

She regretted.

Security camera across street recorded much.

Calvin did not touch mother.

But stood between Ruth and gate.

Took suitcase.

Entered gate code.

Closed.

Ruth remained inside.

Margaret said:

“I should’ve called.”

Detective Hale answered:

“You’re calling now.”

Again, adults regretting silence.

Pattern.

Margaret had another clip.

Bianca arguing with Celia near driveway.

No audio initially? door camera maybe.

Bianca:

“If Ruth leaves this property, you’re fired.”

Celia:

“She has right to leave.”

Bianca:

“Not anymore.”

That phrase mattered.

Not anymore.

What changed?

Not court.

Not diagnosis.

Only altered POA.

They believed paperwork gave ownership over person.

Then Margaret remembered a black sedan arriving several times.

A man with leather briefcase.

Conservatorship attorney maybe.

Investigators identified Gerald Pike, lawyer hired by Calvin/Bianca.

Gerald cooperated.

He said clients wanted emergency conservatorship.

He requested medical evidence.

They gave “Dr. Feld summary.”

Gerald assumed valid.

He began drafting petition.

Then spoke to Dr. Feld personally.

Doctor contradicted.

Gerald told Calvin:

“I cannot file emergency petition on current facts.”

Bianca furious.

She asked whether “family observations” enough.

Gerald said no.

He withdrew.

That was six weeks before arrest.

They needed stronger evidence of Ruth incapacity.

Then something disturbing happened.

Bianca began keeping a “behavior log.”

Entries:

Ruth attempted escape.

Ruth called police without reason.

Ruth refuses hygiene.

Ruth paranoid about money.

All real events reframed.

Ruth wanted leave = escape.

Ruth called police because trapped = confusion.

Ruth struggled due bathroom = hygiene refusal.

Ruth questioned missing money = paranoia.

Every sign of abuse became evidence of dementia.

Ingenious.

Cruel.

Then one planned entry:

Aggressive episode toward caregiver.

No event yet.

Blank line.

They were waiting for one.

Evelyn stared at form.

“Were they trying to provoke Mom?”

Maybe.

No proof.

But Celia recalled Bianca sometimes pushed Ruth emotionally until she raised voice, then recorded end.

A familiar pattern.

Evidence manufactured by context stripping.

Then prosecutor asked:

“Why hose?”

Could have been simple cruelty.

Could also provoke reaction.

Ruth never hit.

She pleaded.

That perhaps frustrated Bianca.

No aggressive episode.

Instead police came.

The case they were building against Ruth became evidence against them.
