Chapter 13 - THE RED NOTEBOOKThe small notebook from linen closet became Ruth’s most powerful evidence.

Not because every entry was legally perfect.
Because it captured her mind over time.
Dates.
Details.
Consistency.
Entries:
August 2 — Calvin says I agreed to $12,000 house payment. I remember $3,000. Check with Shaw.
Bank records later supported Ruth.
August 14 — Bianca says Evelyn told her she cannot handle me. I do not believe this.
False.
September 3 — Dr. Feld said I can walk with cane. Bianca says he said wheelchair.
Doctor supported Ruth.
September 20 — Called 911. Calvin said I was confused. I was not.
Recording supported Ruth.
October 1 — Celia gone. I miss her.
October 11 — blue tablet still hidden.
Then an entry:
November 7 — Calvin cried tonight.
Evelyn paused.
Ruth had written:
He said Bianca threatens to leave if I move out because she says everyone will blame her. Calvin asked me to stay six more months. I said yes because he is my son.
That changed emotional picture.
At one point Ruth agreed to stay.
Not permanent control.
But Calvin perhaps clung to consent after it expired.
Next:
December 19 — I told Calvin six months finished. He said we never agreed to six months.
Gaslighting.
Then:
January 4 — Bianca found letter from Shaw. She screamed at Calvin.
The estate draft.
January 5 — Phone gone.
Timeline exact.
Then one entry shocked Evelyn:
February 12 — Calvin told Bianca to stop.
Ruth described an argument.
Bianca called Ruth manipulative.
Calvin said:
“Enough.”
He brought mother dinner himself.
Sat.
Apologized.
Ruth wrote:
Maybe he will fix this.
Next day:
Bianca cried all morning. Calvin apologized to her. Nothing changed.
A cycle.
Calvin was not incapable of seeing harm.
He repeatedly saw.
Then chose marriage peace over mother safety.
That made case worse emotionally.
There had been exits.
He didn’t take.
Then last page before arrest:
I think Evelyn still loves me.
If I can get tablet charged, I will try.
That message saved her.
At bottom:
I don’t want Calvin punished. I want him to stop.
Ruth read own words weeks later.
She cried.
Evelyn asked:
“Still?”
Ruth thought.
“I want both now.”
“What?”
“I want him to stop.”
“And I want consequences.”
That was growth.
Love did not require shielding.
Then prosecutor asked Ruth whether she would testify.
She was afraid.
Against son.
Evelyn did not pressure.
Nathaniel did not.
Dana did not.
Decision hers.
Ruth said:
“I need time.”
Good.
Meanwhile Bianca’s attorney began preparing defense that Ruth’s notebook was unreliable due cognitive problems.
That made Dr. Feld important.
He reviewed entries only insofar as dates/medical facts.
They were coherent.
No major disorganization.
Then a hidden note:
March 6 — Bianca says if I change will Calvin will lose everything. That is not true.
Exactly.
Ruth’s new estate draft did not disinherit Calvin.
It removed him as trustee and required independent management while leaving equal inheritances to both children.
Bianca either misunderstood or lied to Calvin.
Maybe biggest twist:
Calvin had been told his mother planned to cut him out entirely.
By Bianca.

Was that why he escalated?
