Chapter 1 - The Wedding That Ended Before It Began“TURN THAT OFF!”

Vanessa’s scream cracked through the bridal suite.
Grant did not move.
Rose was still in his arms.
Her tiny fingers clutched the collar of his tuxedo while tears streaked down her cheeks.
On the floor beneath them lay the small bouquet she had picked for Vanessa.
Several roses had broken when Vanessa knocked them from her hands.
Grant stared at the small phone.
Vanessa’s recorded voice continued.
“Once we’re married, I just need Grant to believe the girl doesn’t want to live with us…”
A man answered.
His voice was low.
Unfamiliar.
“And if he doesn’t believe it?”
Vanessa stepped toward Grant.
“Give me the phone.”
Grant raised his eyes.
“Who is that?”
“It’s nothing.”
“Who is the man?”
Vanessa glanced toward Rose.
“She doesn’t even know what she recorded.”
Rose immediately buried her face against Grant’s shoulder.
“Don’t yell at me.”
Grant’s expression changed.
He held his daughter tighter.
“No one is yelling at you.”
Vanessa’s mouth tightened.
“She was spying on me.”
Grant stared at her.
“She’s four.”
“She had a phone recording a private conversation!”
Rose looked up.
“I pressed it by accident.”
“I know, sweetheart.”
“I wanted to take a picture of my flowers.”
Grant kissed her forehead.
“You didn’t do anything wrong.”
Vanessa scoffed.
“Of course. Nothing is ever her fault.”
Grant went still.
Vanessa realized too late what she had said.
“Grant, I didn’t mean—”
“You told my four-year-old daughter to disappear.”
Vanessa inhaled.
“I was frustrated.”
“You told her she was baggage.”
“She follows me everywhere!”
“She loves you.”
“That is exactly the problem!”
Silence.
Grant’s jaw tightened.
Rose whispered, “Daddy?”
“Yes?”
“Is Mommy mad because I ruined the wedding?”
Vanessa looked away.
Grant’s face crumpled for only a second.
Then he became calm.
“No, baby.”
He brushed Rose’s hair from her face.
“You didn’t ruin anything.”
Vanessa gave a sharp laugh.
“Oh, please.”
Grant looked at her.
“You did.”
“Grant—”
“The wedding is over.”
Her face changed.
Not sadness.
Not heartbreak.
Fear.
Real fear.
“No.”
Grant frowned.
“No?”
“You can’t cancel it.”
“I just did.”
“You don’t understand.”
He stared at her.
“What exactly don’t I understand?”
Vanessa looked toward the phone again.
Something in her expression made Grant stop.
He pressed pause.
“What was the rest of that conversation?”
“Nothing.”
“You were discussing Rose.”
“I was venting.”
“With whom?”
“A friend.”
“Which friend?”
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“You’re humiliating me five minutes before our wedding.”
Grant almost laughed.
“You’re worried about humiliation?”
“Everyone is downstairs.”
“My daughter was standing here begging you to love her.”
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“She needs boundaries.”
Grant looked at the fallen flowers.
Rose had spent nearly an hour choosing them from the garden behind the estate.
Yellow.
Pink.
White.
She had rejected every rose with a bent petal.
Because Mommy deserves pretty ones.
Grant remembered her saying it.
His chest tightened.
He pressed play again.
The man’s voice returned.
“You still haven’t answered me.”
Vanessa’s recorded voice lowered.
“After the wedding, Grant signs the new family trust paperwork.”
Grant froze.
Vanessa went pale.
Rose looked between them.
The recording continued.
“After that,” Vanessa said, “we deal with Rose.”
Grant slowly turned his eyes toward his fiancée.
“What family trust paperwork?”
Vanessa lunged.
Grant stepped back.
“Don’t!”
Rose cried out.
Vanessa stopped.
Grant’s expression became colder.
“You were planning something.”
“No.”
“You just said my daughter’s name.”
“She misunderstood—”
“It’s your voice.”
Vanessa’s breathing quickened.
Grant looked toward the doorway.
His best man, Daniel, had appeared outside after hearing the shouting.
Grant nodded toward him.
“Get my attorney upstairs.”
Vanessa’s face drained completely.
“Grant, don’t.”
Daniel hesitated.
Grant repeated, “Now.”
Daniel disappeared.
Vanessa stared at Grant.
“You are making a terrible mistake.”
Grant looked down at Rose.
“No.”
He looked back at Vanessa.
“I almost did.”
The phone remained frozen in his hand.

There were twenty-seven minutes left in the recording.
And Grant suddenly realized the cruelty Rose had heard might not be the worst thing Vanessa had been hiding.
