Chapter 11 - Richard Wanted More Than One CompanyRichard Vale had spent sixteen years beside Grant.

Board meetings.
Hospital openings.
Investor dinners.
Emma’s funeral.
Rose’s first birthday.
He had carried Grant’s father’s casket.
He had introduced Grant to Vanessa.
Grant had called him family.
Now every memory felt contaminated.
Michael spread documents across a conference table.
“If Vanessa is telling the truth, Richard’s strategy makes sense.”
Grant looked over the pages.
“Harrison Medical merges with Voss Global.”
“Yes.”
“Charles thinks he gains my company.”
“Yes.”
“But Richard gets control of my voting shares temporarily.”
“Correct.”
“And then?”
Michael pointed to another corporate filing.
“Richard has been quietly accumulating influence through a third company.”
Grant recognized the name.
Aurelius Health Partners.
An investment group that recently acquired debt held by several Voss subsidiaries.
Grant stared.
“He owns this?”
“Not directly.”
“Who does?”
Michael hesitated.
“A shell company tied to Lucas.”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Grant turned.
“Your brother.”
“He didn’t know.”
Grant laughed.
“You expect me to believe that?”
“He signs what they tell him.”
“So everyone in your family signs documents without reading them?”
Vanessa flinched.
Michael ignored the argument.
“If a Harrison-Voss merger happened, Aurelius could trigger debt provisions giving it significant leverage.”
Grant understood.
Richard wanted the companies joined because then both could be attacked simultaneously.
Charles thought he was predator.
He might actually be prey.
“Does Voss know?”
“No,” Vanessa said.
Grant looked at her.
“How do you?”
“Richard was drunk once.”
Grant stared.
“He told you?”
“Not everything. Enough.”
“Why didn’t you warn Charles?”
“Why would I?”
“Because he controls your brother.”
“And Richard promised to free him.”
Grant shook his head.
She had trusted the person offering the better cage.
Michael asked, “What did Richard say when he was drunk?”
Vanessa hesitated.
“He said old men always think legacy makes them immortal.”
Grant’s expression hardened.
“Charles.”
“And your father.”
Grant frowned.
“My father is dead.”
Vanessa looked at him.
“Richard worked for your father too.”
Of course he did.
Richard had joined Harrison Medical under Grant’s father.
Grant felt a chill.
“How well?”
“Very.”
“What did he do?”
“He handled acquisitions.”
Michael and Grant exchanged a look.
That placed Richard near nearly every sensitive transaction in Harrison’s history.
Including old merger discussions.
Including anything Emma might have found.
“Did Richard know Emma was Charles’s daughter?”
Vanessa said, “Long before you did.”
“How?”
“I don’t know.”
Grant stood.
“He knew before Emma?”
“I think so.”
Grant stopped.
That changed everything.
If Richard knew Emma’s paternity before she did, then the marriage itself could have been seen as corporate leverage years earlier.
But Richard hadn’t introduced Grant and Emma.
They met in college.
Coincidence.
Unless Richard discovered the connection later and exploited it.
Michael said, “We need the old emails.”
Grant nodded.
“They may still exist in company archives.”
“Unless Richard deleted them.”
“He wouldn’t delete everything.”
“Why?”
“Richard collects leverage.”
Grant knew the type.
He had simply never realized Richard was one.
They contacted Harrison Medical’s chief information security officer directly.
Not through normal board channels.
Within hours, archived backups from the year Emma died were located.
Most were encrypted.
But one mailbox showed unusual activity.
Richard’s.
Thousands of deleted messages.
Recovered in fragments.
One subject line appeared repeatedly.
E PROJECT
Grant stared.
“Emma?”
Michael said, “Maybe.”
Another message.
Sender: RVALE
Recipient: an address hidden behind an old encrypted service.
E has discovered connection to V. Keep G focused on marriage problems.
Grant felt sick.
G.
Grant.
E.
Emma.
V.
Voss.
Another.
If E confronts G, timeline collapses.
Grant’s hands trembled.
Another.
K says pressure is working.
Michael frowned.
“Who is K?”
Grant didn’t know.
Then another message loaded.
K has E’s trust. She will call if E decides to leave tonight.
Grant’s breath stopped.
Someone close to Emma.
Someone whose name began with K.
Margaret whispered behind him:
“Katherine.”
Grant turned.
“Who?”
Margaret looked pale.
“Emma’s best friend.”
Grant remembered.
Katherine Sloan.
Emma’s maid of honor.
Rose’s godmother.
She disappeared from their lives after the funeral.
Grant had assumed grief drove her away.
Margaret’s voice shook.
“Emma was with Katherine the afternoon she died.”
Grant stared at the recovered email.
K has E’s trust.

The conspiracy surrounding Emma hadn’t just reached the board.
It had reached her best friend.
