Chapter 18 - The Video Richard Never Expected Anyone to FindThe recovered file was dated four months before Grant met Vanessa.

Richard sat in a private office.
Across from him was Vanessa.
Younger.
Nervous.
Grant watched with Michael and investigators.
Richard said:
“You don’t need to love him.”
Vanessa replied:
“I know.”
“You don’t even need him to love you immediately.”
“What do I need?”
“Rose.”
Grant felt cold.
Richard continued.
“If the child trusts you, Grant will.”
Vanessa looked uncomfortable.
“She’s two.”
“Exactly.”
Grant’s jaw tightened.
This began when Rose was two.
Richard had chosen Vanessa specifically because Grant was a grieving father with a toddler.
The cruelty was not incidental.
Rose had always been the door.
Vanessa asked:
“What if I actually like him?”
Richard laughed.
“Then enjoy yourself.”
“What happens afterward?”
“After what?”
“The merger.”
Richard leaned back.
“Grant will be wealthy.”
“And us?”
“That depends how useful you become.”
Vanessa frowned.
“You promised seven percent.”
“I promised opportunity.”
She looked angry.
The manipulation was there from day one.
Richard never intended to honor her deal.
Then Vanessa said something unexpected.
“And the girl?”
Richard shrugged.
“What about her?”
“Where does she go?”
“With the grandmother.”
“For how long?”
“Does it matter?”
Vanessa looked uneasy.
“She’s little.”
Richard stared at her.
“Do you have a problem?”
A long pause.
“No.”
The video jumped forward.
Different meeting.
Vanessa had been dating Grant for six months.
Richard asked:
“Has Rose started calling you Mom?”
Vanessa smiled despite herself.
“Mommy.”
Richard’s expression sharpened.
“Good.”
Vanessa’s smile faded.
“What?”
“That means we can use separation.”
Grant felt sick.
Vanessa said immediately:
“No.”
Richard looked surprised.
“What?”
“Don’t involve Rose.”
“You involved her when you became part of the family.”
“I’ll influence Grant.”
“You haven’t.”
“Give me time.”
“We’ve given you months.”
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“I said no.”
Grant stared.
Charles had told the truth.
Vanessa resisted using Rose.
Not enough to leave.
Not enough to confess.
But enough that Richard had to push her.
Another video.
One year later.
Vanessa looked exhausted.
“She’s attached to me.”
Richard laughed.
“That was the point.”
“You don’t understand.”
“I understand perfectly.”
“No.”
Vanessa’s voice broke.
“She thinks I’m her mother.”
Richard leaned forward.
“Then when the time comes, breaking that bond will make the evidence stronger.”
Grant stopped the video.
Michael looked at him.
“You okay?”
“No.”
He thought of Vanessa’s words in the bridal suite.
Start by needing me less.
Now he understood where the cruelty came from.
She had known the bond itself would eventually be weaponized.
Instead of saving Rose, Vanessa tried to weaken Rose’s love.
A coward’s solution.
But still a clue that some part of her had known the plan was monstrous.
Grant resumed.
Vanessa whispered:
“I don’t want her hurt.”
Richard answered:
“Then make sure Grant signs.”
There it was.
The cage.
Protect Rose by betraying Grant.
Protect Lucas by obeying Richard.
Protect herself by hurting Rose before Rose could love her more.
Everyone Richard controlled was offered false choices.
Grant shut off the screen.
“What happens to Richard now?”
The investigator answered.
“With the crash evidence, financial fraud, conspiracy, and witness manipulation? He has serious problems.”
“Charles?”
“Separate investigation.”
“Vanessa?”
“Her cooperation will matter, but it doesn’t erase what she did.”
Grant nodded.
Good.
Understanding was not erasure.
Emma had taught him that without intending to.
The investigator slid one final photograph forward.
“Do you recognize this person?”
Grant looked.
A younger Richard stood beside another man.
Grant’s father.
“What is this?”
“Taken seventeen years ago.”
Grant frowned.
“That’s around when Richard joined Harrison.”
“Yes.”
“Why does it matter?”
The investigator pointed toward writing on the back.
RICHARD — CHARLES INTRODUCTION
Grant froze.
“Charles introduced Richard to my father?”
Apparently.
That meant Charles and Richard knew each other long before Emma discovered her paternity.
Long before Vanessa.
Long before Grant became CEO.
Michael whispered, “How far back does this go?”
The investigator shook his head.
“We’re still finding out.”
Grant stared at the photograph.
Then remembered Charles claiming Richard made his own decisions.
Perhaps that was true now.
But once?

Maybe Charles had brought Richard into Harrison Medical himself.
And created the man who later tried to take everything from both families.
