Chapter 10 - THE PRESS CONFERENCECharlotte’s advisers begged her not to speak.

Holden did not.

He only asked:

“What do you want public to know?”

“That I’m not hiding.”

“Good.”

“What not?”

“Mother’s affair.”

“Until evidence needs.”

“Rose? No Rose. Wrong story.”

She almost laughed at cross-story confusion that doesn't exist. Remove.

Charlotte decided statement focused on hotel incident and governance.

Press conference held in Solmere ballroom.

The same hotel.

She wore navy suit.

Bruise fading.

Celestine arrived separately.

Unexpected.

She had announced she would apologize publicly.

Her father opposed.

Charlotte allowed.

First Celestine.

No tears performance.

“I treated another woman as if her dignity depended on whether I believed she belonged in a luxury hotel. I was wrong before I knew her name, and learning her name does not make what I did more wrong. It only exposed why I behaved differently.”

Good.

She admitted she had been told there was security concern but said that did not justify physical action.

She would cooperate with investigation.

She stepped away.

Internet response mixed.

Some called PR.

Some appreciated.

Charlotte respected.

Then Charlotte.

She said:

“I entered my property without announcing identity because I had received credible information that conditions reported to ownership differed from conditions experienced by staff and guests.”

She did not disclose anonymous letter details.

“The interaction captured on video was humiliating. It was also informative.”

Reporters leaned.

“Nobody should need ownership papers to deserve help after being dragged across floor.”

Good moral.

Then:

“Effective today, Solmere Hotel is undergoing independent operational and governance review. No sale, transfer, or encumbrance of property is authorized. Any document stating otherwise is disputed.”

Big.

Question:

“Are you accusing executives of fraud?”

“I am saying records are under review.”

“Is Gideon Crowe suspended because affair with Celestine Harcourt?”

“No.”

“Consensual adult relationship is not basis.”

“Undisclosed conflict while negotiating transaction is.”

Another:

“Will you fire Celestine?”

“She doesn’t work here.”

Laughter.

“Ban?”

“No decision.”

“Will you sue?”

“I care more about accountability than spectacle.”

Then reporter:

“Sources say your late mother had an affair with board chairman Douglas Carradine. Does that affect investigation?”

Someone leaked.

Charlotte’s stomach dropped.

Cameras.

Holden watched from side.

Douglas’s move.

She could deny.

Refuse.

Instead:

“My mother was an adult woman whose private relationships do not determine whether corporate records were falsified or whether Solmere assets were mismanaged.”

Powerful.

“Did she have affair?”

“Her private life is not company collateral.”

Next.

Scandal neutralized.

Clips went viral.

Commentators praised.

Some tabloids still ran:

MEREDITH VALE’S SECRET LOVER

But Charlotte did not flinch.

Douglas’s leverage weakened.

Then a reporter shouted:

“Ms. Vale, are you mentally prepared to take control of empire after years absent?”

Section Twelve narrative.

Charlotte smiled.

“That’s a useful question.”

“Five years ago I withdrew after my mother’s death.”

“I let people I trusted manage responsibilities I should have monitored more closely.”

“That was my mistake.”

“I am correcting it.”

She owned.

“I’m not asking board to pretend I was present.”

“I’m asking board to explain what they did while I wasn’t.”

Excellent.

That evening trustees received emergency injunction.

Judge temporarily prohibited Section Twelve extension and any hotel transfer pending authenticity hearing.

Douglas furious.

Gideon suspended.

Sebastian aligned Charlotte.

First win.

But after conference, Charlotte’s staff discovered anonymous blogger published mother-Douglas hotel photos.

More.

Intimate but non-explicit:

kissing.

Entering rooms.

One image Meredith in robe at balcony, Douglas shirtless behind.

Humiliating.

Caroline Carradine called Charlotte.

Charlotte had never spoken alone.

Caroline’s voice calm.

“Did you leak these?”

“No.”

“I believe.”

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“My mother.”

Silence.

Caroline said:

“Your mother owed me honesty.”

“Douglas owed me fidelity.”

“You owe me nothing.”

Charlotte’s throat tightened.

“She planned tell.”

“Maybe.”

“Dead people always plan better.”

Sharp.

Then:

“I knew.”

Charlotte froze.

“What?”

“Not at first.”

“Last year of relationship.”

“Why stay?”

Caroline laughed softly.

“People ask women that as if leaving is clean.”

“Our son was in rehab.”

“Our daughter pregnant.”

“Assets.”

“Forty years.”

“I stayed.”

“Then Meredith ended affair.”

“Did Douglas threaten her?”

Silence.

“Yes.”

Charlotte sat.

“What did you hear?”

“One night he said:

‘If you take company from me, I’ll make sure Charlotte knows what kind of mother you were.’”

“Company from him?”

“Douglas believed Solmere was as much his as Meredith’s.”

“He had spent thirty years building.”

“He resented she could remove him.”

“Did you know finances?”

“No.”

“I knew he became obsessed.”

“Night she died?”

Caroline inhaled.

“He came home at four in morning from New York.”

“Your mother died next day? Or two days later.”

Timeline.

He had been with Meredith room 4108 then.

“What was he like?”

“Furious.”

“He broke glass in study.”

“Said, ‘She thinks bloodline makes her untouchable.’”

Charlotte’s skin chilled.

“Why didn’t tell police?”

“Because I didn’t connect until funeral.”

“Then Douglas said accident.”

“I was a coward.”

Everyone had fear.

Caroline continued:

“I’m filing divorce.”

After forty years.

“Because photos?”

“No.”

“Because I’m tired of being evidence locker.”

Charlotte almost laughed sadly.

Caroline agreed formal statement.

Another witness.

Then Celestine texted.

Gideon wants to meet me tonight. Says he’ll tell me everything if I come alone.

Charlotte immediately called.

“Do not.”

Celestine:

“I know.”

“Send to lawyer.”

“I did.”

“What does he want?”

“He says Douglas will sacrifice him.”

Probably true.

Holden suggested controlled meeting with investigators if counsel.

Celestine agreed.

At the meeting next day, Gideon arrived believing Celestine alone? Better legal entrapment maybe no. She can record one-party NY law if present. But safer counsel and law enforcement? No active criminal yet. Her attorney sets private hotel suite, records with consent? Gideon doesn't know; NY one-party legal. She can.

Gideon said:

“Carradine is behind transfer.”

“I structured debt.”

“He told me Charlotte would never take control.”

Celestine:

“Did you tell me to confront her?”

“I told you threat existed.”

“You overreacted.”

“Did you know it was Charlotte?”

“Yes.”

There.

He knowingly primed Celestine.

“Why?”

“Video of unstable heir causing scene would help Section Twelve.”

“I expected security to remove her after she claimed ownership.”

“I did not expect you to drag.”

Charlotte listened later and felt cold.

Manufactured humiliation.

Then Celestine asked:

“Meredith’s car.”

Gideon went silent.

“What?”

“The folder.”

“Forget.”

“Did Douglas kill her?”

Gideon whispered:

“You never ask questions you don’t need answers to.”

Celestine:

“That sounds like yes.”

Gideon:

“It sounds like I want to stay alive.”

Then:

“Danner changed system.”

“Douglas handled.”

“I paid because he ordered.”

“I didn’t know she would drive.”

“After she died?”

“I knew enough.”

“Why stay silent?”

“Because by then we all owned piece.”

Conversation gave conspiracy after death, but not intent.

Gideon ended:

“Douglas keeps originals in Connecticut.”

“What originals?”

“Everything Meredith had on us.”

“He took from office after she died.”

The office Charlotte just searched had been emptied years earlier.

But Douglas had returned last month.

Why?

Maybe he came to retrieve one thing missed.

What?

Charlotte went back to Meredith’s letter.

Follow the hotel. Follow the debt.

Maybe something remained inside hotel itself.

Not office.

Hotel.

She asked Malcolm:

“What part of hotel did my mother personally control besides office?”

Malcolm thought.

“The founder’s vault.”

“What?”

Basement private safe-deposit room.

Built in 1931.

Old Solmere owners stored title deeds, jewelry, emergency cash.

Meredith had one box.

Charlotte had forgotten.

Access required owner biometric plus physical key.

Meredith’s biometric invalid after death, but legal successor Charlotte could re-register with court certificate.

Douglas could not open without her.

Unless he had legacy override key.

That might be why he returned.

Looking for key.

May you like

Charlotte smiled.

For first time, she was ahead.
