Chapter 13 - THE EMPLOYEES WHO KNEWCharlotte’s anonymous envelope came from three Solmere employees.

They requested meeting through labor attorney.

A housekeeper.

Payroll analyst.

Bellman supervisor.

Names:

Monica Reyes, 44.

Ethan Park, 31.

Jerome Bell, 58.

Charlotte insisted no retaliation and independent counsel present.

They met in union conference room.

Monica said:

“Your mother used to walk service hallways.”

Charlotte smiled sadly.

“She did.”

“She asked names.”

“Yes.”

“After she died, executives stopped.”

Simple.

They showed records:

housekeeping hours cut while luxury-service fees increased.

vendor company charged $4.2m for linens but delivered lower quality.

Payroll “efficiency fees” deducted from temp staff agencies then kickbacks.

Gideon’s network.

Charlotte’s anger broadened.

Empire theft wasn't abstract.

When executives siphon, workers lose hours.

Ethan found spreadsheets.

He reported to supervisor.

Told “not his pay grade.”

Later performance warning.

Jerome overheard Gideon instruct security about “unstable Vale claimant.”

He knew Charlotte’s name but not face.

He helped send anonymous envelope with photo? They found old shareholder profile and assumed she might respond.

“How knew I’d dress ordinary?”

Monica smiled.

“We didn’t.”

“We said come like woman with no money.”

“You listened.”

Charlotte almost laughed.

“Why not tell Malcolm?”

They did not trust management.

Malcolm overheard? no.

Charlotte asked:

“Why now?”

Monica:

“Because Ms. Vale, people keep saying company family.”

“Family is what bosses call you right before asking you to accept less.”

That landed.

Charlotte decided review would include labor.

She announced:

no retaliation.

repay improper deductions.

vendor audit.

employee representative on compliance.

Board worried cost.

Charlotte:

“Then stop stealing.”

Internet loved.

But she did not want performative billionaire savior.

She met staff without cameras.

At one meeting a dishwasher asked:

“You staying this time?”

Charlotte had no good answer.

“I’m going to try.”

“Not answer.”

“No.”

“It isn’t.”

She committed one year minimum operational involvement before deciding future.

Earn trust.

Malcolm became key.

But guilt.

He admitted:

“I should have stopped Celestine sooner.”

“You didn’t see until after.”

“I saw crowd.”

“What?”

“From desk, heard shout after drag.”

“I froze half second.”

Charlotte looked.

“Why?”

“Because she was Harcourt.”

“And I knew partnership.”

Power again.

“You’re not fired.”

“I didn’t ask.”

“Good.”

“Why not?”

“Because I need managers who admit when they froze.”

He nodded.

Then:

“I want security policy changed.”

“No guest, no matter status, handles another person.”

“Staff intervene.”

Good.

The lobby incident became training case.

No need owner reveal.

Charlotte asked to remove line “VIP sensitivity.”

Everyone same.

Meanwhile Celestine faced consequences.

Luxury cosmetics brand terminated.

Her company board forced temporary leave.

Father threatened trust.

She publicly entered therapy? Could be too personal. She began anger-management and governance coaching privately.

She called Charlotte:

“I’m losing partnerships.”

Charlotte:

“That’s consequence.”

“Do you think deserved?”

“Some.”

“Helpful.”

“You asked.”

Celestine laughed sadly.

Then:

“My company board wants me resign.”

“What do you want?”

“I built company.”

“Then show them you can lead after failure.”

“Don’t demand they forget.”

Advice.

Celestine:

“Why help?”

“I’m not.”

“I’m answering.”

Their relationship remained wary.

Then one day Celestine revealed more.

Gideon had secretly filmed their hotel encounters? That would be abusive and more adult tension. Need tasteful. She found a hidden backup folder on shared cloud containing intimate audio? Maybe messages enough. Let's do he kept screenshots of private texts, not secret filming. She feared blackmail.

He had messages where Celestine discussed Harcourt bid using inside information after sex.

Example:

If Dad gets Solmere, we can finally stop sneaking around.

Gideon:

Then make sure he moves fast before Charlotte turns thirty.

This implicated her in knowing timing but not fraud.

She volunteered to regulators.

Could face civil penalties.

Charlotte respects.

Then investigators discovered Gideon’s wife Marissa Crowe, 50, knew affair? She had suspected and was secretly copying financial statements for divorce.

Marissa contacted prosecutors.

She had a flash drive Gideon kept in home safe.

Why copy? Preparing divorce and asset tracing.

On drive:

communications with Douglas.

Sable payments.

A note dated two days before Meredith death:

Danner says recalibration may produce delayed brake pressure if module stressed. DC says acceptable—goal is to stop her reaching Berkshire, not hurt her.

Charlotte read.

This changed murder intent.

Douglas apparently did not intend physical harm—or wrote that.

But knowingly accepted unsafe brake manipulation to stop Meredith.

Reckless.

Then after crash:

Gideon:

She’s dead. What did you do?

Douglas:

What WE did is now accident unless you want prison.

That was devastating.

Could support manslaughter, conspiracy, obstruction.

Not premeditated murder necessarily.

Truth about death: Meredith died because Douglas and Gideon sabotaged car to prevent her reaching board meeting, not necessarily intending death. Her death was consequence of reckless conspiracy. More nuanced and plausible.

Charlotte cried.

She had wanted murderer.

Clear.

Instead:

They meant to frighten/delay.

They created deadly failure.

Then covered.

Still culpable.

Less cinematic.

More terrible.

Holden said:

“Truth doesn’t owe us clean motive.”

Charlotte nodded.

She informed Daphne.

Caroline.

Sebastian.

Law enforcement.

Charges upgraded.

Douglas and Gideon indicted for involuntary manslaughter? In Massachusetts, wanton/reckless conduct causing death can support involuntary manslaughter. Plus conspiracy, obstruction. Gideon might testify for reduced.

Public still not details sealed until arraignment.

Charlotte finally knew how mother died.

Not accident.

Not carefully planned assassination.

A powerful man believed he had right to interfere with a woman’s movement because she threatened his control.

He chose risk for her.

She paid.

Pattern.

Charlotte sat in empty lobby late at night.

Same marble floor.

Monica cleaning nearby.

Charlotte said:

“My mother died because men thought they could decide where she was allowed to go.”

Monica looked.

“And you got dragged because woman thought she could decide where you belonged.”

Charlotte nodded.

Solmere had been built on doors.

Who has keys.

Her mother’s line.

Charlotte began understanding mission.

May you like

Not merely keep empire.

Change who gets stopped.
