Chapter 19 - THE VOTE TO SELLOne year after criminal trial, Charlotte shocked board.
She proposed considering sale of Solmere Empire—not flagship hotel necessarily, but certain divisions.
“Why?” Sebastian asked.
“Because mother told me ownership should be choice.”
Solmere had:
12 hotels.
residential development.
luxury clubs.
management contracts.
Debt still high.
Some business lines built through corrupt era.
Charlotte did not want empire for ego.
Independent strategy review.
Sell non-core real estate.
Pay debt.
Keep hotels.
Employee protections.
Board debated.
Victor Harcourt offered to buy three coastal properties.
Charlotte considered objectively.
Celestine recused from family company? no direct.
No feud.
Business.
Deal negotiated fair market.
Charlotte required no layoffs 12 months tied solely to acquisition and honor union contracts.
Victor complained.
She walked.
He returned.
Deal.
Mature rivalry.
Proceeds reduced debt $300m.
Company healthier.
Charlotte kept flagship and seven hotels.
Solmere smaller.
Profitable.
Staff happier.
Media called:
HEIRESS DISMANTLES MOTHER’S EMPIRE
Charlotte answered:
“My mother built company, not museum.”
Some family hated.
Sebastian initially:
“You’re selling legacy.”
Charlotte:
“Legacy isn’t square footage.”
He eventually agreed after financials.
This shows leadership.
Then Thomas Avery visited New York.
First time.
He stayed Solmere but insisted pay.
Charlotte comped anyway.
He complained.
They argued affectionately.
He stood in lobby looking at her.
“Your mother would be proud.”
Charlotte:
“She’d argue.”
“She argued when proud.”
Good.
He met Holden.
Holden nervous.
“Biological father is weird.”
Charlotte:
“He’s photographer, not king.”
Thomas told Holden:
“Don’t try to manage her.”
Holden:
“I learned.”
Charlotte:
“Men bonding over my temperament is unacceptable.”
They laughed.
Family expanded without replacing Philip.
At grave of Philip, Charlotte brought photo Thomas took? She thanked father.
No magical closure.
She said:
“You chose me.”
May you like
“That’s enough.”
Emotional.
