Chapter 10 - The Blue Box Daniel Left BehindThe key was taped beneath the box.

Exactly where Daniel would have put it.

Margaret almost laughed through her tears.

Ethan sat at her kitchen table.

The box rested between them.

For eleven years, it had remained in a closet because grief made Margaret afraid of anything Daniel had clearly intended for later.

“What if it changed you?” she whispered.

Ethan looked at her.

“You hid it?”

“I told myself you were too young.”

“I was twenty-four.”

“You had just lost your father.”

“And then?”

She looked ashamed.

“Then every year it became harder to explain why I hadn’t given it to you.”

Ethan stared at the box.

Another secret created because someone believed silence was kindness.

He turned the key.

Inside were three things.

A photograph.

A sealed letter.

A flash drive.

The photograph showed Daniel standing beside Ethan outside Ethan’s college graduation.

Ethan smiled faintly.

Margaret remembered that day.

Daniel had cried in the parking lot where Ethan couldn’t see.

The letter was addressed:

SON.

Ethan opened it.

His father’s handwriting shook slightly.

Ethan read aloud.

“If you are opening this, either I finally found the courage to give it to you, or I ran out of time.”

Margaret covered her mouth.

Ethan continued.

“There are things happening around my work that I do not fully understand. I became involved because I believed I could expose them safely. I may have been wrong.”

Ethan stopped.

His voice cracked.

Margaret reached for him.

He shook his head.

“I’m okay.”

He continued.

“If anything happens to me, do not build your life around revenge.”

Ethan stopped again.

The words seemed aimed directly at the man he had become.

Margaret looked at him.

He could not meet her eyes.

The letter continued.

“You are more like me than you realize. That is why I am afraid for you.”

Ethan swallowed.

“I spent too many years believing that if I could fix one more problem, earn one more promotion, solve one more injustice, then I would finally deserve to rest. Do not make that mistake.”

Margaret began crying.

Daniel had seen Ethan’s future before Ethan lived it.

Then came the final paragraph.

“The drive contains information I copied. It is incomplete. Trust your mother before you trust anyone connected to Halcyon. And if Charles Whitmore ever tells you he was trying to protect me, believe only half of what he says.”

Ethan looked up.

Margaret froze.

“Charles.”

He inserted the drive into a laptop.

Encrypted.

One password hint.

THE FIRST PLACE WE LOST EVERYTHING.

Margaret immediately knew.

“Albany.”

Ethan looked at her.

“Why?”

“Your father and I lived there before you were born. We lost our first pregnancy there.”

Ethan’s face softened.

“I didn’t know.”

“We didn’t talk about it.”

The password worked.

Folders appeared.

Vendor lists.

Emails.

Scanned checks.

Recorded conversations.

Ethan opened one audio file.

Charles’s voice.

“Daniel, you need to let me handle this.”

Daniel answered.

“You already handled it. That’s the problem.”

“I moved the money back.”

“You used my company without permission.”

“I kept Arthur off you.”

“For how long?”

“Long enough to get evidence.”

“You’re lying.”

Then Charles said something that changed everything.

“I need you alive because I need you to take his place.”

Ethan paused.

“What?”

Margaret stared.

They continued.

Daniel: “Take whose place?”

Charles: “Arthur’s.”

Daniel laughed.

“I’m an accountant.”

“You’re clean.”

“Not after you put money through my account.”

“That can be explained.”

“You want me to become chairman?”

“I want someone Arthur cannot control.”

Margaret stared at Ethan.

History was repeating itself.

Charles had once tried to position Daniel against Arthur.

Years later, he helped Ethan become chairman.

“Charles didn’t choose you because of guilt,” Margaret whispered.

Ethan’s face hardened.

“He was finishing Dad’s plan.”

Another file.

This time Victoria.

Younger voice.

Scared.

“Daniel, Arthur knows.”

“How?”

“I don’t know.”

“He knows you talked to me?”

“Yes.”

“Then help me.”

“I can’t.”

“You can.”

“No.”

“You know where he keeps the records.”

Silence.

Daniel continued.

“Victoria.”

She began crying.

“I’m pregnant.”

Margaret froze.

Ethan stared at the screen.

Daniel’s voice softened.

“Does Arthur know?”

“Yes.”

“Is it his?”

Victoria did not answer.

Margaret covered her mouth.

Ethan whispered, “Jesus.”

The recording continued.

Victoria finally said:

“He says if I help you, he’ll destroy me.”

Daniel: “And the baby?”

“He says he’ll take everything.”

The audio ended.

Margaret sat back.

Victoria had not simply been Arthur’s protégé.

She had been pregnant.

Possibly by him.

Ethan stared at the file list.

One folder was labeled:

V.L. CHILD.

He opened it.

Inside was a single document.

A birth certificate.

Mother:

Victoria Langford.

Father:

Blank.

Child:

SOPHIA LANGFORD.

Ethan frowned.

“I’ve never heard of her having a daughter.”

Margaret looked at him.

“Neither have I.”

Then a second document appeared.

Adoption record.

Sealed, but copied.

The child had been adopted shortly after birth.

New surname redacted.

Ethan’s phone buzzed.

Victoria.

He answered immediately.

“Where are you?”

Her voice was quiet.

“You opened the box.”

“Yes.”

Silence.

“Then now you know why I stayed loyal to Arthur.”

“You were afraid for your daughter.”

“Yes.”

“Where is she?”

Victoria laughed sadly.

“You already know her.”

Ethan’s face changed.

“What?”

Margaret leaned closer.

Victoria continued.

“She’s been in your life for years.”

Ethan’s heart started pounding.

“Who?”

May you like

Victoria whispered the name.

“Rebecca.”
