Chapter 12 - Charles Stops PretendingMargaret’s first thought was strangely ordinary.

Charles looked older holding a gun.

Not more dangerous.

Smaller.

As though violence had stripped away the polished executive and exposed the frightened man underneath.

Ethan immediately moved in front of Margaret.

Charles pointed the weapon down.

“Don’t.”

Rebecca froze near Victoria.

Victoria laughed bitterly.

“I told you.”

Ethan stared at Charles.

“You followed us?”

“I followed Rebecca.”

“Why?”

“Because Victoria was always going to bring you here.”

Police were outside.

Ethan hoped.

Unless Charles knew.

His phone remained in his pocket.

No one moved.

Victoria gripped the briefcase.

“You should have let me disappear.”

Charles’s face tightened.

“You were blackmailing the company.”

“I was buying freedom.”

“You demanded twenty million dollars.”

“I spent twenty years cleaning up your mess.”

Charles’s jaw clenched.

Margaret looked between them.

“What mess?”

Victoria stared at Charles.

“Tell them.”

“Victoria.”

“Tell them what you did after Arthur died.”

Ethan’s voice hardened.

“What did you do?”

Charles sighed.

“Put the case down.”

Victoria shook her head.

“You think this is still about Arthur.”

Margaret felt the story changing again.

Charles looked at Ethan.

“Arthur was corrupt.”

“We know.”

“He was reckless.”

“We know.”

“He was also losing control.”

Victoria laughed.

“To you.”

Charles’s face tightened.

Margaret understood.

“You wanted Halcyon.”

Charles looked at her.

“I wanted to save it.”

“From Arthur?”

“Yes.”

Ethan stared.

“So you were trying to remove him.”

“Yes.”

“Dad was part of that.”

Charles did not answer.

Victoria did.

“Daniel was supposed to expose Arthur.”

Ethan looked at her.

“Charles needed a whistleblower.”

Margaret felt sick.

Daniel had not stumbled into a scandal.

He had been recruited into one.

“Did Daniel know?”

“Eventually.”

Charles said it quietly.

“He agreed?”

“Not exactly.”

“Then what?”

“He discovered I had manipulated the money through his company.”

Ethan’s face hardened.

“And realized you were using him.”

“Yes.”

“Dad decided to expose both of you.”

Charles nodded.

Victoria whispered, “That’s why he died.”

Charles raised the gun slightly.

“Careful.”

Margaret stared.

“You killed Daniel.”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Charles looked toward Victoria.

“She still hasn’t told you.”

Victoria’s face went pale.

Ethan turned.

“What?”

Victoria shook her head.

“Don’t.”

Margaret felt her pulse in her throat.

“You were there.”

Victoria began crying.

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

Charles said nothing.

Victoria looked at Margaret.

“Arthur came to the garage.”

“We know.”

“He was furious.”

“What did he do?”

“Threatened Daniel.”

“Then?”

“Daniel told him the records were already copied.”

Ethan’s eyes moved toward the briefcase.

Victoria continued.

“Arthur tried to take the case.”

“Did they fight?”

“Yes.”

Margaret could see it.

Daniel, who hated confrontation.

Arthur, powerful and furious.

“Then Daniel started feeling sick.”

“What caused it?”

Victoria shook her head.

“I didn’t know then.”

Charles’s grip tightened around the gun.

“Victoria.”

She ignored him.

“Arthur had given Daniel a drink at dinner earlier.”

Margaret’s stomach turned.

“The beta blocker?”

“Probably.”

“Arthur poisoned him.”

“Yes.”

Charles snapped.

“You don’t know that.”

Victoria laughed.

“I found the prescription afterward.”

Everyone looked at her.

“What prescription?” Ethan asked.

“Arthur had heart medication.”

“Beta blocker?”

“Yes.”

Margaret closed her eyes.

Arthur had access.

Opportunity.

Motive.

But Charles still held a gun.

Why?

Victoria looked at Ethan.

“Arthur left Daniel collapsing.”

“Charles arrived.”

“Yes.”

“And?”

Victoria stared at Charles.

“He could have saved him.”

Silence.

Margaret looked at Charles.

“What does she mean?”

Charles shook his head.

“Daniel was already dying.”

“You found him alive.”

“Yes.”

“Did you call for help?”

“No.”

Margaret’s voice broke.

“Why?”

Charles’s face collapsed.

“Because he had evidence against me too.”

Ethan’s body tensed.

“You let him die.”

“No.”

“You stood there.”

“I thought the ambulance was already coming.”

“You knew he called 911.”

“Yes.”

“Then why not help?”

Charles looked away.

Margaret understood.

“You wanted him quiet.”

Charles began shaking.

“I didn’t poison him.”

“No.”

Margaret’s eyes filled.

“You just watched.”

Charles’s face twisted.

“I was terrified.”

“So was Daniel.”

The words hit him.

For a second, the gun lowered.

Then sirens sounded outside.

Charles panicked.

Victoria moved.

Everything happened at once.

She threw the briefcase toward Ethan.

Charles raised the gun.

Rebecca screamed.

Ethan shoved Margaret down behind a pew.

A shot exploded.

Wood splintered.

Police shouted outside.

Charles turned toward the doors.

Victoria lunged for Rebecca.

Another shot.

Then officers poured into the chapel.

“DROP THE WEAPON!”

Charles froze.

For a second, Margaret thought he might fire.

Then the gun fell.

He dropped to his knees.

The irony was not lost on her.

Twenty-four hours earlier, Margaret had been forced to kneel because a powerful woman believed she controlled everything.

Now Charles Whitmore knelt because the truth had finally stripped him of control.

Ethan lifted Margaret.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

Rebecca was crying.

Victoria held her.

The briefcase lay open on the floor.

Documents scattered across the aisle.

Margaret saw one page near her shoe.

Daniel’s handwriting.

A single line circled twice.

IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TO ME, CHARLES KNEW.

Margaret picked it up.

Charles looked at her as officers handcuffed him.

“I’m sorry.”

Margaret stared.

“You had eleven years to say that.”

Then police led him away.

But Victoria was staring at the open briefcase.

Not with relief.

With horror.

Ethan noticed.

“What?”

She pointed.

“The black envelope.”

“What black envelope?”

“It’s gone.”

Rebecca frowned.

“What was inside?”

May you like

Victoria looked toward the chapel doors.

“Proof Arthur Vale wasn’t acting alone.”
