Chapter 7 - Victoria Disappears Before SunriseBy eight-thirty, the humiliation in the ballroom had become secondary.

Victoria Langford was officially missing.
The blood discovered in her apartment was minimal.
A smear along the kitchen counter.
Several drops near the entryway.
No body.
No obvious signs of a prolonged struggle.
Her phone was gone.
Her laptop was gone.
Her purse was found open on the floor.
The USB drive was not found.
Ethan stood inside the apartment with a detective named Lauren Pierce.
Margaret had insisted on coming.
Pierce was not pleased.
“This is potentially a crime scene.”
Margaret looked at her.
“I understand.”
“You were involved in an altercation with Ms. Langford hours before she disappeared.”
“Yes.”
“Your son struck her.”
“Yes.”
Pierce looked at Ethan.
“And now you’re chairman of the company where she worked.”
“Yes.”
“You understand how this looks.”
Ethan nodded.
“Which is why I called you the second Rebecca contacted me.”
Pierce studied him.
“You could become a suspect.”
“I know.”
Margaret’s stomach tightened.
Ethan remained calm.
That frightened her more.
People sometimes learned calmness because panic had stopped helping years earlier.
Pierce walked them through what police knew.
A neighbor heard voices shortly before four.
A security camera showed Victoria entering the building at 2:37 a.m.
At 3:52, a man entered using a service door.
Cap.
Dark jacket.
Face obscured.
At 4:16, the same man left carrying a laptop bag.
At 4:21, Victoria left through the lobby.
Alone.
Walking.
No visible injury.
Margaret frowned.
“If she walked out, why call her missing?”
“She hasn’t contacted anyone since.”
“What about the blood?”
“Could be from her lip.”
The punch.
Ethan’s face tightened.
Pierce noticed.
“We’re testing it.”
“So she may have staged the apartment?”
“Possible.”
“For what?”
Pierce looked at Ethan.
“Maybe she knew she was about to be investigated.”
Ethan thought of the USB.
“Or she was scared.”
“Of you?”
“No.”
“Who?”
He hesitated.
“Arthur Vale.”
Pierce stared.
“He’s dead.”
“Yes.”
“Then no.”
“People who worked for him.”
That interested her.
Ethan explained the old vendor fraud.
Daniel.
The parking garage.
Charles.
Victoria’s recording.
Pierce listened carefully.
“You’re telling me a potential witness in your father’s death disappeared hours after threatening to reveal a recording?”
“Yes.”
Pierce looked toward Margaret.
“And your husband’s death was ruled natural?”
“Yes.”
“For eleven years?”
Margaret nodded.
Pierce sighed.
“Wonderful.”
The corporate counsel joined them.
Rebecca had already begun preserving Halcyon records.
Charles was ordered not to contact former employees without legal oversight.
Ethan canceled the public announcement of his chairmanship.
The press had not learned the full story yet.
That lasted until 9:14.
A gossip site posted video from the ballroom.
VIOLENT BILLIONAIRE CHAIRMAN PUNCHES FEMALE EXECUTIVE AT CHARITY GALA.
Margaret stared at the headline.
The video began after her slap.
It showed only Ethan hitting Victoria.
Margaret looked at him.
“This was edited.”
“Yes.”
“Who posted it?”
“Anonymous source.”
Within an hour, larger outlets picked it up.
Ethan became the story.
Not Margaret.
Not the threat.
Not the kneeling.
A powerful billionaire had punched a female executive.
The outrage was immediate.
Ethan’s phone exploded.
Board members panicked.
Investors called.
Rebecca entered the room holding her tablet.
“Halcyon shares are down eleven percent in premarket trading.”
Charles cursed.
Margaret looked at Ethan.
“This is what Victoria meant.”
“What?”
“She said she could destroy your life.”
Ethan shook his head.
“She couldn’t have uploaded this after disappearing.”
“No.”
Charles looked at him.
“But someone could.”
Margaret stared at the edited clip.
The framing began less than one second before Ethan’s punch.
Whoever leaked it knew exactly which part to cut.
“Was this from ballroom security?”
Rebecca shook her head.
“No.”
“How do you know?”
“Angle.”
The clip came from a guest’s phone.
Someone at the event.
Someone intentionally filming Margaret’s humiliation.
Ethan’s expression changed.
“Find the original.”
Rebecca nodded.
Charles looked at him.
“Until then, you need to consider stepping back temporarily.”
Margaret immediately looked at Charles.
“No.”
Ethan raised a hand.
“He’s right.”
“You became chairman last night.”
“And this morning I’m a reputational crisis.”
“You protected me.”
“The public doesn’t see that.”
“Then show them.”
Rebecca looked uneasy.
“We can release the security footage.”
Ethan nodded.
“Do it.”
Charles hesitated.
“That footage also shows Ms. Langford slapping Margaret.”
“Yes.”
“And threatening your job.”
“Yes.”
“That will create another scandal.”
Ethan’s face hardened.
“Good.”
Charles stared.
Ethan continued.
“I’m done protecting Halcyon from the truth.”
Margaret looked at him.
Something had changed.
The hidden chairman who spent years gathering leverage had disappeared.
In his place stood Daniel’s son.
That afternoon, Halcyon released the full ballroom footage.
Public opinion shifted almost instantly.
Not completely.
Some still condemned Ethan’s punch.
Others focused on Victoria’s cruelty.
The image of Margaret slowly kneeling became viral.
But Margaret hated every second of it.
Millions of strangers watched her humiliation.
People called her brave.
People called Victoria evil.
People called Ethan heroic.
None of them understood how small Margaret had felt on that floor.
Then, at 5:40 p.m., an email arrived.
From Victoria.
Subject:
YOU WANTED THE RECORDING.
Ethan opened it.
One attachment.
Audio file.
No message.
Margaret stood behind him.
“Play it.”
Ethan clicked.
Daniel’s voice filled the room.
Older than Ethan remembered.
Steady.
Angry.
“You told me the vendors were clean.”
Victoria answered.
“I told you to stop digging.”
“You knew.”
“I knew Arthur was moving money.”
“Through my company.”
Silence.
Daniel continued.
“You used me.”
Victoria’s voice became sharper.
“Daniel, listen to me. You need to leave.”
“Not until you tell me who transferred the money into my account.”
Margaret stopped breathing.
Victoria whispered something.
The recording crackled.
Ethan turned up the volume.
Then Victoria said the name.
May you like
Margaret’s knees nearly gave out.
“Charles.”
