CHAPTER 1

CHAPTER 1
The DNA Results Were Worth More Than Fifty Thousand Dollars
The Genetics Research Wing at St. Vincent Medical Center was almost silent after midnight.
Most of the hospital slept.
Only the emergency department remained busy.
Deep inside the restricted laboratory corridor, two sealed DNA envelopes rested on a stainless-steel counter, waiting to be delivered to Dr. Daniel Brooks before sunrise.
Emily Carter stood perfectly still outside the laboratory door.
She wasn't a nurse.
She wasn't a patient.
She wasn't even supposed to be inside the building.
Dressed in an elegant black business suit and carrying a designer handbag, she looked like an attorney working late rather than someone about to commit a felony.
She checked her watch.
12:18 a.m.
Exactly as promised.
The hallway cameras had entered their nightly maintenance cycle.
She had only three minutes.
Emily removed a thin plastic card from her purse.
One quick swipe.
The laboratory door clicked open.
No alarms.
No flashing lights.
Someone inside the hospital had already disabled them.
She stepped inside.
The room smelled of disinfectant and fresh printer ink.
On the counter lay two sealed DNA envelopes.
Both carried identical warning labels.
CONFIDENTIAL – AUTHORIZED PHYSICIAN ONLY
Emily carefully examined the names.
One belonged to Benjamin Foster, a sixty-eight-year-old billionaire whose deteriorating health had made headlines across New England.
The second belonged to a twenty-seven-year-old construction worker named Jacob Miller.
Two men.
Two completely different lives.
Yet tonight...
Someone wanted their DNA results exchanged.
Emily didn't open the envelopes immediately.
Instead, she photographed them.
Front.
Back.
Every serial number.
Every barcode.
Whoever hired her demanded proof before the switch.
Only then did she slide a thin blade beneath each seal.
Her hands never shook.
This wasn't her first corporate assignment.
Inside each envelope was a laboratory report.
She removed both.
Swapped them.
Then carefully resealed the envelopes using a portable heat tool hidden inside her handbag.
Perfect.
Even under close inspection...
No one would know they had ever been opened.
She was placing the envelopes back onto the counter when a bright beam of light flooded the room.
"Don't move."
Emily slowly turned.
Hospital security officer Michael Hayes stood in the doorway, holding a flashlight in one hand.
His other hand rested near his radio.
His face showed more curiosity than anger.
"What are you doing in a restricted lab?"
Emily smiled politely.
"I think we're both intelligent enough not to waste time pretending."
Michael didn't answer.
Instead, his flashlight drifted toward the two envelopes.
Then back to Emily.
"Step away from the counter."
She obeyed without argument.
Then quietly reached into her handbag.
Michael stiffened.
"If that's a weapon..."
"It isn't."
She pulled out a thick bundle of hundred-dollar bills secured by a bank strap.
Exactly fifty thousand dollars.
She held it where he could see it.
Not waving it.
Not forcing it.
Simply offering it.
"You've worked here for sixteen years."
Michael's eyes narrowed.
"You know who I am?"
"I know enough."
"You have two daughters."
"Your youngest starts college next month."
"You refinanced your house six months ago."
Michael's expression changed.
Not because she was wrong.
Because she was right.
Emily took one slow step closer.
"No one gets hurt."
"No patient is in danger."
"You put the flashlight down."
"You forget you ever saw me."
"And tomorrow morning..."
"This money belongs to your family."
Michael stared at the cash.
His grip on the flashlight weakened.
For just a second...
He imagined paying off his mortgage.
Helping his daughters.
Finally sleeping without worrying about bills.
His hand slowly moved toward the money.
Then—
A second flashlight suddenly lit the corridor.
A calm voice echoed through the laboratory.
"I'd like to know..."
"...why my security guard is negotiating instead of calling the police."
Dr. Daniel Brooks stood at the doorway.
Still wearing his white lab coat.
Still holding a patient file under one arm.
His eyes never left the opened DNA envelopes.
For the first time that night...
Emily Carter wasn't certain she was the smartest person in the room.
