CHAPTER 5
The Locker No One Was Supposed to Open

At 2:47 a.m., Detective Ryan Cole arrived at St. Vincent Medical Center.

Dr. Daniel Brooks had already briefed him on everything.

The switched DNA envelopes.

The attempted bribe.

The fake doctor.

The mysterious number inside the surgical glove.

3147.

Ryan didn't waste time.

"South Station?"

Emily nodded.

"Locker 3147."

Ryan looked at her carefully.

"You understand this could be another trap."

"I know."

"But if they wanted to kill me..."

"They've already had plenty of chances."

Ryan couldn't argue with that.

Forty minutes later...

The station was nearly deserted.

Only a handful of late-night travelers waited for the first morning trains.

Locker 3147 sat at the far end of the baggage hall.

Nothing about it looked unusual.

No surveillance van.

No suspicious people.

No obvious danger.

Ryan signaled two plainclothes detectives to secure both exits.

Then he turned to Emily.

"You open it."

She stared at him.

"Why me?"

"Because whoever arranged this expected you to come."

Emily slowly inserted the locker key she had kept hidden inside her handbag.

The lock clicked.

She hesitated.

Then pulled the metal door open.

Inside...

There wasn't a suitcase.

There wasn't money.

Only a small insulated medical transport container.

The type hospitals used for transporting blood and organs.

Daniel's expression changed immediately.

"Oh no..."

Ryan looked inside.

A single kidney transport box.

Completely empty.

Daniel slowly lifted it from the locker.

His hands were shaking.

"This container belongs to our transplant department."

Ryan frowned.

"You're sure?"

Daniel pointed to a faded barcode.

"I signed this out yesterday morning."

Silence.

Emily looked confused.

"I thought Benjamin needed a donor."

"He does."

Daniel replied quietly.

"And yesterday afternoon..."

"...a compatible kidney arrived."

Ryan stared at him.

"What happened to it?"

Daniel swallowed.

"It disappeared."

The station suddenly felt much colder.

Ryan slowly pieced everything together.

"The DNA reports."

"The fake doctor."

"The delayed results."

"The stolen transport box..."

"They're all connected."

Daniel nodded.

"They never wanted Benjamin dead."

Ryan looked up.

"What?"

"They wanted the transplant to fail."

Ryan immediately called the hospital.

The transplant coordinator answered on the first ring.

Her voice sounded panicked.

"Doctor Brooks..."

"We've been trying to reach you."

Daniel took the phone.

"What happened?"

"The donor kidney..."

"...has been found."

Everyone looked at him.

"Where?"

The coordinator hesitated.

"It was delivered back to the hospital..."

"...twenty-three minutes ago."

Ryan frowned.

"So the organ wasn't stolen."

Daniel slowly lowered the phone.

"No..."

"It was replaced."

The room fell silent.

Ryan looked at the empty transport container.

Then at Daniel.

"What do you mean?"

Daniel's voice was barely above a whisper.

"The kidney that came back..."

"...isn't the one that left."

No one spoke during the drive back to the hospital.

Every minute mattered.

If the transplant had already begun...

Benjamin Foster's life depended on an organ that might not even belong to the donor.

Ryan suddenly asked,

"Daniel..."

"If someone switched the kidney..."

"...how would you know?"

Daniel looked straight ahead.

"I wouldn't."

"Not by looking at it."

Ryan understood immediately.

"You'd need another DNA test."

Daniel nodded.

"The very DNA report Emily was hired to delay."

The entire investigation suddenly came full circle.

The envelopes had never been about inheritance.

They had never been about proving family relationships.

They were the final verification that the donor organ belonged to the correct person.

Delay the report...

Replace the organ...

And no one would discover the truth until it was too late.

Ryan accelerated.

For the first time since this case began...

He wasn't trying to catch a criminal.

He was racing against an operating room clock.

Just as St. Vincent Hospital came into view...

Daniel's phone rang again.

He answered immediately.

The color drained from his face.

Ryan didn't need to ask.

He already knew something had gone terribly wrong.

Daniel slowly lowered the phone.

"The transplant..."

He stopped speaking.

Ryan gripped the steering wheel.

"What about it?"

Daniel looked out the windshield toward the hospital lights.

"They've already started."
