CHAPTER 6

FINAL CHAPTER
The Patient Was Never the Target

Ryan and Dr. Daniel Brooks burst into Operating Room Three.

Every surgeon inside turned toward them.

"What are you doing?" the lead surgeon demanded.

Daniel didn't answer.

His eyes were fixed on the stainless-steel tray beside the operating table.

The donor kidney.

Still resting inside its preservation container.

The transplant hadn't begun.

Not yet.

Daniel let out the first deep breath he had taken all night.

"Stop everything."

The room fell silent.

Ryan held up his badge.

"No one touches that organ."

The surgical staff exchanged confused glances.

The lead surgeon frowned.

"Doctor Brooks, this patient has minutes."

Daniel nodded.

"I know."

"But if I'm right..."

"...that kidney doesn't belong to our donor."

A nurse quickly brought the emergency DNA verification kit that had been waiting for the laboratory's final authorization.

Daniel compared three samples.

The donor's preserved blood.

Benjamin Foster's compatibility profile.

And a tiny tissue sample from the kidney.

Less than ten minutes later...

The machine printed its report.

Daniel stared at the page.

Then quietly closed his eyes.

"It doesn't match."

A heavy silence filled the operating room.

Ryan slowly looked at the surgical team.

"So someone replaced the donor organ."

Daniel nodded.

"And if we had continued..."

"...Benjamin would've rejected it within hours."

The lead surgeon leaned against the wall in disbelief.

"But who could switch an organ inside a secured hospital?"

Ryan answered before Daniel could.

"Someone who never intended to steal it."

Everyone looked at him.

Ryan continued.

"They only needed the transplant to fail."

An hour later, detectives searched the transplant storage room.

Nothing had been forced open.

No broken locks.

No missing records.

Everything appeared normal.

Except one small detail.

The barcode attached to the replacement organ.

It had been printed only three hours earlier.

The original barcode...

Had been destroyed.

Ryan smiled.

"They made one mistake."

Daniel looked up.

"What?"

"They thought we'd keep looking at the DNA reports."

Ryan placed both transport logs side by side.

Every signature matched.

Every timestamp matched.

Except one.

At 11:42 p.m.

Someone had signed Daniel Brooks' name to authorize moving the donor organ.

Ryan handed the form to Daniel.

"Is that your signature?"

Daniel shook his head immediately.

"No."

Ryan nodded.

"I know."

"Because whoever forged it..."

"...misspelled your middle name."

Daniel blinked.

Almost no one knew his full legal name.

Except Human Resources.

And one other department.

Hospital Administration.

Ryan requested access to employee records.

Less than thirty minutes later...

One name appeared over and over again.

Temporary access approvals.

Security override requests.

Restricted laboratory maintenance.

Transplant inventory adjustments.

All authorized by the same administrator.

Karen Whitmore.

Director of Hospital Operations.

She wasn't a surgeon.

She wasn't a scientist.

She never touched a DNA report.

She never entered an operating room.

But she controlled every electronic door inside the hospital.

She quietly resigned six hours before the police arrived.

By sunrise...

She had been arrested at Logan International Airport while attempting to board a flight to Zurich.

During questioning, she admitted almost nothing.

Only one sentence.

"I never wanted Benjamin Foster dead."

Ryan looked at her across the interview table.

"Then why do it?"

Karen lowered her eyes.

"Because if he survived..."

"...he would've signed the merger."

Ryan frowned.

"What merger?"

Daniel, who had been reviewing Benjamin Foster's personal file, quietly placed a folder on the table.

Benjamin Foster owned the majority shares of one of the nation's largest biotechnology companies.

The morning after his surgery...

He had planned to approve a merger worth nearly $4.8 billion.

If he died...

The merger collapsed.

If the surgery failed...

The board postponed the vote indefinitely.

Someone stood to gain hundreds of millions of dollars from that delay.

Karen hadn't acted alone.

She had been paid through a chain of shell companies tied to an investment group betting against Benjamin's company.

The DNA envelopes...

The $50,000 bribe...

Emily...

Michael...

Every piece had been designed to keep investigators looking in the laboratory while the real crime happened in the transplant unit.

Emily Carter eventually accepted a plea agreement.

She testified against the brokers who had recruited her.

Michael Hayes returned the untouched bundle of cash to investigators.

Months later...

Benjamin Foster recovered from a successful transplant using the correct donor organ.

Before leaving the hospital, he asked to meet three people.

Dr. Daniel Brooks.

Michael Hayes.

And Emily Carter.

Emily expected anger.

Instead, Benjamin simply smiled.

"You made one terrible decision."

He paused.

"But you made one good one."

Emily looked down.

"I don't deserve forgiveness."

Benjamin nodded thoughtfully.

"Maybe not."

"But because you told the truth..."

"...I'm still alive."

Outside the hospital...

Snow began falling over Boston.

Ryan stood on the front steps beside Daniel.

Another case closed.

Another conspiracy exposed.

Daniel looked toward the genetics laboratory where it had all begun.

"It's strange."

Ryan smiled.

"What is?"

Daniel looked up at the hospital windows.

"Everyone thought the DNA envelopes contained the truth."

He paused.

"They didn't."

Ryan nodded.

"They only pointed us toward it."

The two men stood silently as the first light of dawn broke across the city.

Some crimes begin with a gun.

Some begin with greed.

This one...

Began with two sealed envelopes.

And ended because one detective refused to believe the obvious.
