Chapter 11 - Behind the Pantry WallThey returned with police present.

Ryan had been ordered away while Emily collected property, but Susan didn’t trust him.

Neither did Emily.

The pantry cabinet looked ordinary.

White wood.

Brass handle.

A little narrower than the others.

Robert knelt and examined the interior.

“Margaret had a false back installed.”

Emily ran her fingers along the panel.

Nothing.

Thomas crouched beside them.

“Push the upper-right corner.”

Robert looked at him.

Thomas shrugged.

“She used the same trick in our first office.”

Emily pushed.

Click.

The panel loosened.

Her heart began pounding.

Robert pulled it forward.

Behind it was a dark cavity.

Empty.

Emily stared.

“No.”

Thomas reached inside.

Nothing.

Ryan had found it first.

Emily sat back on the floor.

“All of this for nothing.”

“Not necessarily,” Susan said.

Emily noticed something inside the compartment.

Dust had been disturbed recently.

And beneath it lay a tiny torn piece of blue-painted metal.

The box had definitely been there.

Robert swore.

“He took it.”

“Or Claire did,” Susan said.

Emily looked around the kitchen.

Her eyes landed on the baby monitor app on her phone.

“When?”

“What?”

“If someone took it recently, the monitor might have recorded them.”

They searched.

Two weeks earlier.

3:12 a.m.

Motion detected.

Ryan entered the kitchen.

Barefoot.

He looked around carefully.

Then Claire appeared.

Emily’s stomach turned.

The woman had been inside her house while she slept upstairs.

Claire carried a screwdriver.

Ryan opened the pantry.

Together they removed the false panel.

The camera angle did not show inside.

But moments later, Claire emerged carrying a blue metal box.

Emily watched in stunned silence.

Ryan kissed her.

Not hurriedly.

Not casually.

A familiar kiss.

One that had clearly happened many times before.

Emily looked away.

The betrayal should not have mattered beside the fraud.

But it did.

Her marriage had not simply been violent.

It had contained another woman standing in her kitchen while Emily and Lily slept upstairs.

On-screen, Ryan whispered something.

Emily increased the volume.

“We’re almost there.”

Claire smiled.

“Eighteen days.”

Then Ryan said something that made everyone freeze.

“After the distribution, Emily can think whatever she wants.”

Claire laughed.

“If she’s still in a position to think anything.”

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Robert’s face turned red.

“What does that mean?”

Susan replayed it.

Emily wrapped her arms around herself.

The life insurance policy flashed through her mind.

Two million dollars.

“No.”

Susan looked at her.

“We don’t jump to conclusions.”

“He insured me.”

“I know.”

“He forged my power of attorney.”

“I know.”

“He was planning to take my trust.”

“Yes.”

“And she says ‘if I’m still in a position to think.’”

Susan’s voice became very careful.

“It could mean legal incapacity.”

“Or something else.”

Robert walked away, fists clenched.

Thomas said nothing.

Emily remembered messages mentioning medication.

“Wait.”

She opened the photographs of the second phone.

They zoomed in.

One message:

C: Increase slowly. Too much and she’ll notice.

Ryan:

She already thinks the exhaustion is from Lily.

Emily felt numb.

“What were they giving me?”

Susan’s eyes hardened.

“Did Ryan give you medication?”

“Vitamins.”

“When?”

“Every morning.”

Robert turned.

“What vitamins?”

“He said I was iron deficient after pregnancy.”

“Were they prescribed?”

Emily shook her head.

“He bought them.”

Her stomach rolled.

She remembered feeling foggy.

Heavy.

Sometimes dizzy.

She had blamed sleep deprivation.

Ryan had blamed postpartum recovery.

Emily whispered, “I stopped taking them three days ago.”

“Why?”

“I forgot.”

The word tasted bitter now.

For once, forgetting might have saved her.

Susan called someone.

Within an hour, Emily was at a clinic having blood drawn.

The physician told her some substances might no longer be detectable.

But they would test what they could.

Emily returned to her father’s house after dark.

Lily slept in her arms.

Robert sat across from her.

“You can stay here forever.”

Emily looked at him.

“I don’t want forever.”

“What?”

“I want my life back.”

“You will.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“Everybody keeps deciding things for me. Mom created a trust because she thought she knew when I’d be ready. You kept it secret because you thought you knew what was best. Ryan controlled everything because he thought I was too weak to stop him.”

Robert lowered his eyes.

“I’m done letting people protect me by taking choices away.”

He nodded.

“You’re right.”

Emily looked toward Lily.

“I want to know everything.”

“You deserve to.”

“No more secrets.”

“No more.”

Her phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

A photo appeared.

The blue box.

Sitting on a table.

Then a message.

You want your mother’s letter? Come alone.

Emily showed Susan through a video call.

“Absolutely not.”

Another message arrived.

Ryan doesn’t know I contacted you.

Emily’s pulse quickened.

Claire.

Susan said, “Still no.”

Then Claire sent one final photograph.

A handwritten envelope lay beside the blue box.

Across the front, in handwriting Emily recognized instantly:

For Emily, when she is ready.

Her mother’s missing letter.

May you like

And beneath the photo:

Ask yourself why Ryan never wanted you to read this.
