Chapter 15 - Ryan’s Own Camera Betrayed HimRyan had been obsessed with control.

That obsession became evidence.

The hidden cameras captured everything.

Ryan removing bank statements before Emily entered the room.

Ryan breaking objects, then photographing Emily beside the damage.

Ryan waking her deliberately after Lily had finally fallen asleep.

Ryan changing the contents of vitamin capsules.

Ryan speaking with Claire.

And, most importantly, Ryan explaining the plan in his own words.

The clearest recording showed him alone in the bedroom.

He was on the phone.

Claire appeared on speaker.

“We have eighteen days.”

Ryan laughed.

“She’s already halfway convinced she can’t manage without me.”

“What if Robert tells her?”

“He won’t.”

“How do you know?”

“Because Robert thinks keeping promises makes him honorable.”

Ryan paced.

“Once the distribution hits, I get her to sign the investment authorization.”

“And if she refuses?”

“I file for emergency custody. Show the court everything we’ve collected. She’ll panic.”

“What if she still refuses?”

Ryan stopped walking.

“Then the POA goes in.”

Claire’s voice became uneasy.

“That signature isn’t clean.”

“It doesn’t need to survive forever. Just long enough to move the money.”

“And the house?”

“Thomas signs the affidavit. Carter-Morgan files the claim. Emily settles because she’ll be terrified of losing everything.”

Claire laughed nervously.

“You’ve really thought this through.”

Ryan smiled directly beneath the camera he apparently forgot was recording.

“I’ve had five years.”

Emily stopped the video.

Five years.

He hadn’t discovered the inheritance recently.

He had built their marriage around it.

Maybe not from the first date.

But close enough.

Robert turned away.

Emily felt strangely calm.

Ryan’s cruelty at the sink had once seemed like the worst betrayal imaginable.

Now it looked almost small compared with the architecture behind it.

Five years of manipulation.

Five years of questions.

Five years of pushing her farther from her father.

Five years of financial dependence disguised as marriage.

Susan paused the video.

“There’s enough here for multiple investigations.”

“What happens now?”

“Ryan’s attorney will likely advise him to surrender.”

“And if he doesn’t?”

Susan’s expression was grim.

“Then police find him.”

“Find him?”

Emily looked up.

“Where is he?”

Nobody answered.

Ryan had disappeared.

His phone was off.

His truck had been located at a motel parking lot.

The room was empty.

Claire claimed she had no idea where he went.

Thomas didn’t either.

For forty-eight hours, Emily barely slept.

Police increased patrols around Robert’s property.

Emily kept Lily beside her.

Every sound outside made her look toward the windows.

Then Ryan called.

Not Emily.

Robert.

Robert answered on speaker while police traced what they could.

Ryan sounded exhausted.

“I need to talk to Emily.”

Robert’s face hardened.

“No.”

Emily touched his arm.

She nodded.

Robert handed over the phone.

“Ryan.”

Silence.

Then his voice changed.

“Em.”

For one second, she heard the man she had once loved.

She hated that her heart recognized him.

“Where are you?”

“Does it matter?”

“Yes.”

“I’m not going to hurt you.”

“You already did.”

“I made mistakes.”

Emily almost laughed.

“You spent five years planning to steal from me.”

“That isn’t what happened.”

“We have recordings.”

Silence.

Emily continued.

“We have the safe documents. The storage locker. Claire is cooperating.”

Ryan breathed slowly.

“Claire is a liar.”

“So are you.”

“She wanted the money more than I did.”

“You forged my signature.”

“I was trying to build a future for us.”

“By taking everything into accounts I couldn’t control?”

“You don’t understand finance.”

The familiar condescension returned.

Emily smiled sadly.

“There you are.”

“What?”

“That voice.”

Ryan went quiet.

“The one that always appears when I stop obeying.”

He exhaled.

“Emily, I love you.”

For years, those words had fixed everything.

Now they sounded empty.

“You loved access to me.”

“No.”

“To my house.”

“No.”

“To my trust.”

“That’s not true.”

“Then why did you know about it before I did?”

Silence.

Emily waited.

Ryan finally whispered, “Because I was scared.”

“Of what?”

“Being nobody.”

The answer was unexpectedly honest.

“My father died owing everyone money. My mother lost our house. I promised I would never live like that.”

“So you stole.”

“I built something.”

“You built it on me.”

Ryan’s voice cracked.

“We had a family.”

“We still do. You’re Lily’s father.”

“I can fix this.”

Emily looked toward her daughter sleeping in Robert’s arms.

“No.”

“Emily.”

“No.”

A long silence.

Then Ryan said, “I need to see Lily.”

“Not like this.”

“She’s my daughter.”

“I know.”

“You can’t keep her from me.”

“The court will decide what happens next.”

Ryan’s breathing changed.

“You sound like your father.”

“No.”

Emily looked at Margaret’s letter on the table.

“For the first time, I sound like me.”

Ryan was silent.

Then he said one final sentence.

“You’re going to regret making me your enemy.”

The call disconnected.

Robert looked furious.

Emily didn’t.

She felt certain.

“He’s coming back.”

Susan asked, “Why?”

“Because Ryan can run from police.”

May you like

Emily looked toward the documents covering the table.

“But he can’t stand losing.”
