Chapter 12 - Claire Wanted Something in ReturnThey did not let Emily go alone.

But they let Claire believe she had.

Susan contacted investigators.

A meeting was arranged at a coffee shop in downtown Franklin.

Robert waited two blocks away.

An officer sat in an unmarked vehicle.

Emily entered alone.

Claire was already there.

The blonde woman from Ryan’s photographs looked different in person.

More tired.

Less glamorous.

Afraid.

The blue box was not visible.

Emily sat opposite her.

“Where is it?”

Claire looked toward the door.

“Did Ryan follow you?”

“No.”

“Your father?”

“No.”

That part was technically true.

Robert hadn’t followed.

He had arrived first.

Claire exhaled.

“You probably think I’m a monster.”

“I don’t think about you enough to choose a category.”

Claire flinched.

Good.

“Where is my mother’s letter?”

“Safe.”

“Where?”

“I need protection.”

Emily laughed softly.

“You broke into my house.”

“Ryan let me in.”

“You helped him steal documents.”

“Yes.”

“You helped him forge my signature?”

Claire looked down.

“Yes.”

Emily hadn’t expected the confession.

“You were drugging me.”

Claire’s head snapped up.

“No.”

“The messages.”

“I told him to give you supplements.”

“What supplements?”

“I thought they were over-the-counter sleep aids.”

Emily stared.

“Why would you help him make me sleepy?”

Claire looked ashamed.

“He said you were checking his phone at night.”

Emily almost smiled.

Of course.

Even Claire had been given a version of Emily designed to justify whatever Ryan needed.

“You believed everything he said?”

“At first.”

“You slept with my husband.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Fourteen months.”

The number hurt.

Lily was only six months old.

The affair began while Emily was pregnant.

Claire saw the realization.

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t.”

Emily leaned forward.

“You don’t get to use that word because you’re scared now.”

Claire nodded.

Fair.

“Why are you turning on him?”

“He lied to me.”

Emily laughed.

This time she couldn’t help it.

“That’s your reason?”

“No.”

Claire’s face tightened.

“He told me you knew about the trust.”

“What?”

“He said Robert had disclosed everything and you were deliberately keeping Ryan from marital assets.”

“That makes no sense.”

“I know that now.”

“He also told you I was unstable?”

“Yes.”

“And dangerous?”

“Yes.”

Emily sat back.

Ryan had created multiple realities.

For Emily, Claire barely existed.

For Claire, Emily was a wealthy unstable wife withholding millions.

For Robert, Ryan was an imperfect but ordinary husband until recently.

Every person had received exactly the lie Ryan needed.

“What changed?”

Claire stared at her coffee.

“The blue box.”

Emily’s heartbeat shifted.

“What was inside?”

“Documents. Thomas’s agreement. Your mother’s records. Letters.”

“Mine?”

“One addressed to you.”

“And you read it?”

Claire looked up.

“Yes.”

Emily wanted to slap her.

Instead, she gripped the table.

“What did it say?”

“I’m not going to tell you.”

“Why?”

“Because it belongs to you.”

That answer surprised Emily.

Claire continued.

“After I read it, I realized Ryan had lied about the entire reason Margaret created the trust.”

Emily’s pulse quickened.

“What reason?”

Claire shook her head.

“You need to read it.”

“Then give it to me.”

“I will.”

“What do you want?”

“Immunity.”

“You’re asking the wrong person.”

“I’ll give everything to prosecutors. Messages. Documents. Bank transfers. The blue box.”

“Where is it?”

Claire hesitated.

“Storage unit.”

Emily stared.

“Ryan knows?”

“He thinks it’s in my apartment.”

“Why steal it from him?”

Claire’s eyes filled with something close to fear.

“Because of the insurance policy.”

Emily went still.

Claire whispered, “He created one for me too.”

The noise of the coffee shop seemed to disappear.

“How much?”

“One million.”

“Beneficiary?”

“Carter-Morgan Holdings.”

Emily felt cold.

Claire took out her phone.

“There’s more.”

She showed Emily a message Ryan had sent three nights earlier.

Once the trust is transferred, we don’t need anyone else involved.

Claire had responded:

Meaning?

Ryan:

Meaning we simplify.

At the time, Claire hadn’t understood.

Then she found the insurance policy.

“Ryan told me you were the obstacle,” Claire whispered. “Then I realized eventually I would be one too.”

Emily stared at the woman who had betrayed her and suddenly saw the same trap from another angle.

Ryan didn’t love Claire.

He used her.

Just differently.

“Where is the blue box?”

“I’ll take you.”

“No. You’ll give the location to investigators.”

Claire shook her head.

“Ryan has someone watching it.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

Emily frowned.

Claire lowered her voice.

“Ryan isn’t as broke as he tells people.”

“What does that mean?”

“He has cash.”

“How much?”

“Hundreds of thousands.”

“From where?”

Claire looked directly at her.

“That’s the part I never understood.”

Emily remembered the trust.

“It couldn’t come from Mom’s accounts. He didn’t have access yet.”

“No.”

“Then where?”

Claire opened a banking application.

Several payments flowed from Carter-Morgan Holdings into another company.

Hollow Creek Construction.

Emily knew the name.

Ryan’s company.

She stared at the totals.

$48,000.

$72,000.

$110,000.

“Where did Carter-Morgan get the money?”

Claire swallowed.

“Robert.”

Emily froze.

“No.”

“Not intentionally.”

“What does that mean?”

Claire turned the phone toward her.

The deposits came from an account bearing a familiar name.

Hayes Family Trust — Administrative Reserve.

Emily felt nauseated.

“You said he couldn’t access the trust.”

“He couldn’t access your distribution.”

Claire’s voice dropped.

“But someone has been draining the administrative account for three years.”

Emily looked toward the window.

Robert was somewhere nearby.

Her father.

Trustee.

The man responsible for protecting the money.
