Chapter 13 - PAIGE’S CONSEQUENCE

Paige Mercer did not go to prison for murder conspiracy because evidence did not support that.
She had not known Damian intended to push Vivian.
She had, however, crossed professional and legal boundaries during his investigation.
Improper access attempts.
Questionable data acquisition.
Assistance in identifying verification weaknesses later used in fraud.
She cooperated fully.
Lost her investigator license.
Paid penalties.
Received a reduced criminal disposition on unauthorized-access conduct.
Her career ended.
When a reporter asked:
“Do you feel Damian used you?”
Paige answered:
“Yes.”
Then added:
“I also kept taking his money after I knew his questions were getting wrong.”
That honesty separated explanation from excuse.
Vivian agreed to meet her once.
Paige arrived visibly nervous.
“I don’t expect you to forgive me.”
“Everyone says that now.”
Paige almost laughed.
Vivian continued.
“What do you want?”
“To apologize.”
“For?”
“Helping him research you.”
“That was legal initially.”
“For not stopping when it changed.”
Vivian nodded.
“What changed?”
“When he asked about signature verification.”
“And you continued.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Money.”
Simple.
No trauma speech.
No grand ideology.
Vivian appreciated it.
“How much?”
“Forty thousand total over nine months.”
Vivian raised an eyebrow.
“You destroyed your career for forty thousand?”
Paige looked embarrassed.
“When you say it like that.”
“How else?”
Paige nodded.
“I kept thinking the next request was the last weird one.”
Vivian understood.
Threshold movement again.
One compromise.
Then another.
Each small enough to defend.
Until the total looked indefensible.
Vivian asked:
“What would have stopped you?”
Paige thought.
“If somebody had asked me to explain all the requests out loud together.”
Vivian sat back.
Interesting.
Isolation helps rationalization.
One suspicious question can sound innocent.
Ten listed together reveal pattern.
Vivian later incorporated that insight into company compliance.
High-risk exceptions were reviewed cumulatively.
Not only transaction by transaction.
Because fraud often hides in individually explainable steps.
Paige eventually found administrative work in a nonprofit fraud-prevention organization.
Lower salary.
No investigative license.
Real consequence.
Real second life.
Vivian did not become her sponsor.

She did not believe every redemption needed a benefactor.
