Chapter 18 - VIVIAN FALLS IN LOVE AGAIN

At seventy-one, Vivian met Robert Hale.
No relation to Martin.
Sixty-six.
Architect.
Divorced.
Bald.
Terrible dancer.
He was not tattooed.
Vivian joked that this disappointed the tabloids.
They met through a museum restoration committee.
Robert asked her to dinner.
She said no.
Then yes two weeks later.
He did not know how to behave around her history.
On the third date:
“Can I ask about Damian?”
“No.”
“Okay.”
Vivian smiled.
“Good answer.”
A month later, she brought it up herself.
Robert listened.
Did not say:
I would never do that.
Did not promise safety.
He simply asked:
“What makes you feel comfortable?”
Vivian thought.
“Separate finances.”
“Easy.”
“No surprise blindfolds.”
Robert laughed, then realized she was serious.
“Understood.”
“Do not manage my staff.”
“Wouldn’t know how.”
“And if I say no?”
He looked confused.
“Then no.”
Vivian’s chest tightened.
Such a simple answer.
She did not fall in love because Robert passed a test.
There was no perfect test.
She fell gradually.
Annoyingly.
At first she checked everything he said.
Background.
Divorce.
Finances.
Career.
Robert knew.
“Did I pass?”
“There is no pass.”
“Comforting.”
Vivian smiled.
Trust returned differently.
Not naive.
Not paranoid.
Verified where appropriate.
Allowed where human.
She never merged business assets with Robert.
Not because she loved him less.
Because love no longer needed financial proof.
Robert understood.
One evening he said:
“You know, some people would find this prenup insulting.”
Vivian replied:
“Some people should not marry me.”
He laughed.
They married when Vivian was seventy-three.
Small ceremony.
No yacht.
Eleanor signed as witness.
Elena attended.
Captain Kane attended.
Maria? Wait, wrong story. No Maria here.
Paige sent flowers anonymously through the foundation office but did not attend.
Vivian laughed when she recognized the note style.
At the reception, Robert whispered:
“Surprise.”
Vivian froze.
Then he held up a plate of chocolate cake.
“That’s the whole surprise.”
May you like
She laughed until she cried.
Healing sometimes looked ridiculous.
