Chapter 16 - THE LAST LETTER

Three years after the push, Vivian received Damian’s final letter.
Not because he died.
Because she had asked him to stop writing.
He respected it.
The final letter was short.
Vivian,
I used to think being understood would make what I did smaller.
It doesn’t.
Understanding is not reduction.
I know that now.
I was angry about my family.
I was ashamed of depending on you.
I loved you.
I wanted what you had.
I wanted to punish you for being able to take access away.
I planned.
I pushed you.
None cancels the others.
You once told me people reveal themselves by what they believe they are entitled to do when disappointed.
I thought you were talking about business.
I understand now.
I will not write again.
Damian.
Vivian folded it.
No tears.
Not immediately.
Later that evening, she cried.
Eleanor asked:
“Why now?”
“Because he finally stopped asking me to carry his explanation.”
That was what changed.
Earlier letters still reached toward Vivian.
See me.
Understand me.
Know I loved you.
The last one simply named responsibility.
No request.
May you like
Vivian did not answer.
Respecting the ending was her answer.
