Chapter 17 - SARAH WAS ALIVE, BUT DAVID HAD ONE LAST THREATThe abandoned pediatric clinic looked dead from the outside.

Inside, lights were on underground.

Police found a freight elevator still operating.

Basement level two.

A corridor.

Locked rooms.

Then a woman screamed.

“Michael!”

He knew the voice.

Three years disappeared from his face.

“Sarah!”

Officers held him back until the area was cleared.

Then the door opened.

Sarah Bennett stepped into the hallway.

Alive.

Thin.

Hair shorter.

A scar along her temple.

But alive.

Michael couldn’t move.

Neither could she.

For several seconds, they simply stared.

Then Michael began crying.

“Sarah.”

She walked toward him.

He tried to hug her.

She raised one hand.

“Don’t.”

He stopped.

The rejection hurt.

But he accepted it.

Sarah looked at Richard.

Her face broke.

“You got the box.”

Richard nodded.

“And Noah?”

“Alive.”

“Is he okay?”

Richard hesitated.

Sarah saw it.

“What happened?”

Claire stepped into the corridor.

Sarah went completely still.

Claire whispered:

“Sarah.”

The sound Sarah made was pure fury.

“You.”

Claire began crying.

“I’m sorry.”

Sarah crossed the distance and slapped her.

Claire didn’t defend herself.

“You followed me.”

“Yes.”

“You left me.”

“Yes.”

“You married my husband.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

“And you hurt my son.”

Claire couldn’t answer.

Sarah stepped forward.

“What did you do to Noah?”

Richard explained briefly.

Locked outside.

Cold exposure.

Hospital.

Sarah’s entire body started shaking.

“You locked my baby outside?”

Claire sobbed.

“I panicked.”

Sarah slapped her again.

Michael stepped between them only to stop it becoming worse.

Sarah turned on him.

“And you?”

Michael’s face collapsed.

“I saw him.”

Sarah stared.

“You saw Noah outside?”

“Yes.”

“And?”

“I didn’t open the door.”

Silence.

That hurt Sarah more than Claire’s confession.

Richard saw it.

Michael whispered:

“I was afraid.”

Sarah laughed bitterly.

“Of your wife?”

“Yes.”

“More afraid than our six-year-old was of freezing?”

Michael looked down.

“No.”

“Then why?”

“Because I’m weak.”

Sarah’s eyes filled.

“No. Weakness explains hesitation.”

She pointed toward him.

“You made a choice.”

Michael nodded.

“Yes.”

Sarah looked away.

No reunion.

No instant forgiveness.

Good.

Truth first.

Brooks approached.

“Where is David?”

Sarah’s expression changed.

“He left.”

“When?”

“Maybe two hours.”

“With Emma?”

Sarah nodded.

Claire gasped.

“You saw her?”

“Yes.”

“Is she okay?”

“She helped me.”

Claire began crying.

Sarah continued.

“Emma found the clinic months ago. She started volunteering under David’s instructions.”

“Why?”

“She wanted to know why Henry lied about her birth.”

“Did she know Claire is her mother?”

“Yes.”

Claire covered her face.

“She knows?”

“She’s known for six weeks.”

“Why didn’t she come to me?”

Sarah stared coldly.

“Maybe she knew what you did to Noah.”

Claire had no answer.

Brooks asked:

“Why did David take her?”

“Because Emma stole something.”

“What?”

Sarah smiled faintly.

“The original founder agreement.”

Richard’s pulse jumped.

The document David needed to claim Bennett Industries.

“If Emma has it…”

“David can’t complete the sale.”

“Where is she now?”

Sarah looked toward a security monitor.

“David said he was taking her to the place where everything started.”

Richard frowned.

“Meaning?”

Sarah looked at him.

“Your childhood home.”

Richard stopped breathing.

The Bennett family estate.

Not the mansion where Noah lived.

The old house in Connecticut where Richard and David grew up.

Abandoned for decades.

Richard had forgotten it still existed under a trust.

Sarah continued.

“David said he was going to make you choose.”

“Choose what?”

“His freedom or the child.”

Claire whispered:

“Emma.”

Sarah nodded.

Then she looked at Richard.

“He believes you’ll bring the ledger.”

“What ledger?”

“The real Winter Haven ledger. Thomas stole it from David years ago.”

Richard frowned.

“I don’t have it.”

Sarah stared.

“Then Thomas never told you.”

“No.”

Sarah looked genuinely afraid.

“What?”

“Thomas hid it with the only person David would never search.”

Richard’s stomach dropped.

“Who?”

Sarah looked toward Michael.

“Noah.”

Michael froze.

“How?”

“Not physically. Digitally.”

Sarah explained.

Thomas had encrypted the ledger.

The password phrase was split among Noah’s childhood games.

Winter goes home.

Follow the bell.

Look under the place where sick kids sleep.

Each phrase corresponded to a location containing part of the encryption key.

The final part—

Sarah didn’t know.

Only Noah did.

Richard looked at Michael.

David didn’t merely want the boy because of inheritance.

He needed Noah’s memory.

Then Richard’s phone rang.

David.

He answered.

Emma screamed in the background.

Claire nearly collapsed.

David said calmly:

“Bring Noah to the old Bennett house.”

Richard’s voice became ice.

“No.”

“Then Emma dies.”

“No.”

A pause.

“And then Sarah.”

Richard looked at her.

David laughed.

“You found her. Congratulations.”

“How do you know?”

“I know everything happening around my family.”

Richard looked at the hallway cameras.

Someone was still feeding David information.

Inside the operation.

Then David said:

“Midnight.”

The line ended.

Brooks immediately ordered everyone’s phones secured.

Someone nearby was compromised.

Then Sarah looked at Michael.

“Where’s Paul Mercer?”

Everyone froze.

Paul had vanished.

Sarah whispered:

“He isn’t David’s partner.”

Richard frowned.

May you like

“What?”

“He’s David’s son.”
