Chapter 9 - NOAH’S TRUST WAS BUILT WITH STOLEN MONEYThe twenty-two million dollars in Noah’s trust had been transferred in three payments.

All from shell companies linked to David Bennett.

Sarah received the money secretly.

Then placed it into a protected trust for her son.

At first, Richard thought she had stolen it.

Then Detective Brooks found Sarah’s notes.

This is evidence, not inheritance.

Sarah had discovered David’s offshore accounts.

Instead of reporting them immediately, she moved one account into a legal trust structure he could not easily reclaim.

Why?

Leverage.

Richard didn’t like it.

But he understood.

Sarah had been trying to force David out into the open.

Michael paced the archive room.

“She used Noah.”

Richard looked at him.

“To protect him.”

“With stolen money.”

“Money David stole from the foundation.”

Michael stopped.

That mattered.

Noah’s trust was essentially recovered charitable funds.

Sarah had hidden it under her child’s name because she believed formal channels were compromised.

Richard found another note.

If I transfer it back through the foundation, Paul will know. If I go to police, Paul will know. If I tell Michael, Claire will know. Richard is the only one I still think may be clean, but I need proof before I involve him.

Richard read it twice.

Sarah had trusted him.

Almost.

Not enough to tell him.

And she died before she could.

Brooks turned toward Michael.

“You need to understand your legal exposure.”

Michael nodded.

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

She listed it.

Fraudulent insurance documents.

Shell company under his name.

Possible misuse of foundation funds.

Failure to protect Noah.

Child endangerment.

Michael looked physically ill.

“I’ll cooperate.”

Richard studied him.

“Even if it sends you to prison?”

Michael’s eyes filled.

“I watched my son through a window.”

Richard said nothing.

“That was prison already.”

It was a dramatic sentence.

But Richard believed him.

Michael had finally reached the point where self-pity was no longer useful.

His phone buzzed.

A voicemail from Claire.

She sounded terrified.

“Michael, I know you hate me. You should. But if you want Noah alive, don’t let Richard move the twenty-two million.”

Then:

“David believes Sarah left a password with Noah.”

Michael looked at Richard.

“What password?”

Noah had never mentioned one.

They returned to the hospital.

Noah was sitting more upright now.

Doctors said warming response looked promising.

Some movement had returned to his toes.

Richard nearly cried when he saw it.

Noah smiled weakly.

“I moved them.”

“I heard.”

“Dr. Maya said that’s good.”

“It’s very good.”

Richard sat.

“Buddy, I need to ask you about your mom again.”

Noah’s smile faded.

“Okay.”

“Did she ever teach you a special word?”

He thought.

“A password?”

Noah’s eyes widened.

Richard noticed.

“What?”

“Mom had a game.”

“What game?”

“I was little.”

“That’s okay.”

“She would say, ‘Where does winter go?’”

Richard frowned.

“What did you answer?”

Noah smiled faintly.

“Home.”

Michael looked confused.

“Sarah taught him that?”

Noah nodded.

“She said if someone asks me about the snow, I say home.”

Richard felt a chill.

Winter.

Winter Haven.

The fraudulent program.

“Did Claire ever ask?”

Noah’s face changed.

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Last week.”

“What did she say?”

“She asked what Mom told me about winter.”

“And you?”

“I said I didn’t remember.”

Richard squeezed his hand.

“Good.”

Noah looked worried.

“Was I supposed to tell her?”

“No.”

“What does ‘home’ mean?”

Richard didn’t know yet.

Brooks searched Sarah’s files for the phrase.

Nothing.

Then Daniel Ross called.

He had gone to Thomas Avery’s cabin.

This time he found something.

A safe.

Inside:

old Bennett Foundation records.

Cash.

A passport under Thomas’s real name.

And a photograph of a house.

Snow-covered.

On the back:

WINTER GOES HOME.

Richard recognized the property.

A mountain lodge his parents had owned when he and David were boys.

It had been sold decades earlier.

Or so Richard thought.

Brooks checked.

The property was owned by D.B. Holdings.

David.

Michael whispered:

“That’s where he is.”

Richard looked at Noah.

Maybe.

But there was more.

Daniel found a laptop in Thomas’s safe.

One active message thread.

Between Thomas and David.

The latest message had been sent that morning.

Claire failed. The boy still knows the phrase.

May you like

David’s reply:

Then bring me the boy.
