Chapter 19 - THOMAS FINALLY REVEALED WHY SARAH’S CAR CRASHEDThomas surrendered immediately.

Richard wanted to hit him.
Sarah wanted answers.
Police gave them neither privately, but Thomas agreed to a recorded statement.
He admitted everything.
Foundation theft.
Surveillance.
Helping David fake his death.
Pretending to help Sarah.
But when asked about the crash, his voice changed.
“I didn’t mean to kill her.”
Sarah stared through the glass.
“You didn’t.”
Thomas looked toward her.
“I know.”
“What happened?”
He swallowed.
“David told me to stop you.”
“How?”
“Force you off the road. Take the files.”
“You punctured my tire.”
“No.”
“Who did?”
“Paul.”
Paul Mercer sat in another interrogation room.
Thomas continued.
“I didn’t know until later.”
Sarah’s face tightened.
“Then why follow me?”
“I was supposed to block the road.”
“And Claire?”
“Backup.”
“You all surrounded me.”
“Yes.”
Michael looked sick.
Thomas continued.
“I pulled beside you. You panicked. The rear tire blew.”
Sarah closed her eyes.
“I remember.”
“Your SUV left the road.”
“And then?”
“I got to you first.”
“Why didn’t you call an ambulance?”
“David told me not to.”
Richard’s fists tightened.
Thomas looked ashamed.
“You were alive. Injured, but conscious.”
Sarah whispered:
“I remember your voice.”
Thomas’s eyes filled.
“I’m sorry.”
“No, you’re sorry now.”
“Yes.”
“What happened to the body they buried?”
“Another woman.”
Silence.
“Who?”
“Unidentified patient from Henry Cole’s clinic. She died without family days earlier.”
Richard felt disgust.
Even death had become paperwork to them.
“Henry falsified dental records?”
“Yes.”
Sarah asked:
“Why keep me alive?”
“Passwords.”
“The accounts.”
“Yes.”
“And when I refused?”
Thomas looked down.
“David told us to wait.”
“For three years?”
“He believed eventually Noah would remember.”
Richard understood why David had recently become aggressive.
Noah was older.
Starting to read.
Starting to ask questions.
Sarah’s hidden clues were becoming accessible.
Claire’s marriage to Michael placed her close enough to monitor him.
Then Noah found the photograph.
Everything accelerated.
Thomas continued.
“Henry started regretting it.”
“That’s why he helped Emma.”
“Yes.”
“He let Emma see me?”
“Secretly.”
Sarah nodded.
“Emma gave me the camera.”
The video in the necklace.
Henry had helped Sarah record it.
“How did the necklace end up with Henry?”
“Emma took it to him.”
“And he was killed.”
Thomas looked toward Paul’s room.
“Paul.”
Brooks later confirmed physical evidence.
Paul murdered Henry after discovering he planned to confess.
Paul also killed Daniel Ross?
No.
Daniel was alive and under protection.
But Paul had tried to arrange it.
David’s network collapsed rapidly once Thomas gave them the ledger.
Shell accounts.
Bribes.
Fraud.
Obstruction.
Kidnapping.
Attempted murder.
Evidence tampering.
Decades.
Richard looked at Thomas through the glass.
“Why come in now?”
Thomas stared back.
“Noah.”
Richard frowned.
“I watched what happened at the house through Claire’s security feed.”
“The cold?”
“Yes.”
Thomas’s expression changed.
“I’ve done terrible things.”
Richard said nothing.
“But seeing that boy…”
He shook his head.
“I realized David had turned us into people who could watch a child suffer and call it necessary.”
Michael flinched.
The sentence applied to him too.
Claire most of all.
Thomas continued.
“I thought about Sarah on the highway.”
“Too late,” Richard said.
“Yes.”
Thomas nodded.
“Far too late.”
Sarah left the room.
Michael followed.
Outside, she stopped him.
“You don’t have to follow me.”
“I know.”
“Then why?”
“Because I have things to say.”
“I don’t want apologies tonight.”
“I know.”
Sarah looked at him.
He almost smiled at the phrase.
Then became serious.
“Noah asked about you.”
Sarah’s face softened instantly.
“When?”
“Every year.”
She swallowed.
“What did you tell him?”
“That you loved him.”
“Good.”
“And that you died.”
Her eyes filled.
“You believed it.”
“Yes.”
Silence.
Michael continued.
“I failed him.”
Sarah looked at him sharply.
“I know what happened.”
“Dad told you?”
“Yes.”
“I saw him outside.”
“I know.”
“I could have opened the door.”
“I know.”
“I didn’t.”
Sarah’s eyes hardened.
Michael continued.
“I’m not asking you to understand.”
“Good.”
“I’m going to tell child services everything.”
“You should.”
“I’ll accept whatever custody restrictions they recommend.”
Sarah looked surprised.
“He’s my son too.”
“Yes.”
“And you think stepping aside makes this right?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
“Because he needs to feel safe more than I need to feel like his father.”
Sarah’s expression shifted.
Not forgiveness.
But perhaps the first sign that Michael had finally understood the hierarchy.
Child first.
Adult feelings later.
May you like
Sarah whispered:
“Then start there.”
