Chapter 11 - Rachel Had Set a Trap From Beyond the GraveInvestigators recovered footage from cameras near Point Dume.

Vanessa arrived forty-one minutes before Ethan.

She opened the first compartment.

Removed a small envelope.

Read it.

Then left immediately.

The image resolution wasn’t enough to read the page.

But one nearby traffic camera captured Vanessa’s car heading inland.

Toward Beverly Hills.

Not away.

“Why go home?” Ethan asked.

Thomas stared at the map.

“Because Rachel told her something was there.”

Vanessa’s hidden room.

The silver case.

Rachel knew about it.

Maybe the decoy note told Vanessa that something dangerous remained inside.

Torres obtained a search warrant.

They entered Vanessa’s Beverly Hills estate shortly after midnight.

The hidden room stood open.

Shelves lined the walls.

Documents had been removed hastily.

A safe was empty.

One wall held photographs.

Thomas.

Ethan.

Rachel.

Sophie.

Not family portraits.

Surveillance.

On another wall were printed news articles about deaths, lawsuits, business collapses.

Each connected to people who challenged Vanessa.

Thomas stood silently.

“I knew she kept files.”

“You didn’t know this?”

“No.”

Ethan looked at him.

“You keep saying that.”

Thomas accepted the accusation.

Police found something else.

A recording station.

Vanessa had archived private conversations.

Thousands of hours.

Blackmail.

Torres called federal investigators.

This now extended far beyond family abuse.

Ethan walked deeper into the room.

A photograph of Rachel caught his attention.

She was leaving Hale’s clinic.

A handwritten note beneath it:

RACHEL KNOWS ABOUT THOMAS.

Another:

SHE WILL TELL ETHAN AFTER TREATMENT.

Another, dated three weeks later:

TREATMENT IS FAILING. PROBLEM MAY SOLVE ITSELF.

Ethan nearly tore the photograph from the wall.

Thomas touched his shoulder.

Ethan pulled away.

“Don’t.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Everyone is sorry after Rachel is dead.”

Thomas lowered his hand.

A forensic technician called from the safe.

“We found something.”

Inside the supposedly empty safe was a hidden drawer.

One envelope.

Rachel’s handwriting.

TO VANESSA.

Ethan stared.

Rachel had known Vanessa would search this room eventually.

Torres opened it carefully.

Inside:

Vanessa,

If you’re reading this, you found the decoy at Point Dume.

Which means you did exactly what I knew you would do.

You came here.

Vanessa must have read these words hours earlier.

Rachel continued.

You’ve spent years believing fear makes you smarter than everyone else.

It doesn’t.

It makes you predictable.

The real evidence is not here.

It is somewhere you cannot reach without Ethan.

But I wanted you to come back to this room one final time.

Because every camera in this room has been mirrored.

Ethan looked upward.

Tiny cameras.

Vanessa’s own surveillance equipment.

Rachel had configured backups.

Torres’s eyes widened.

“If those mirrors still exist…”

Technicians searched the system.

They found a dormant cloud archive.

Password protected.

Ethan tried Rachel’s usual combinations.

Nothing.

Then Sophie’s birthday.

Access granted.

Files populated.

Vanessa’s hidden room had been recording continuously for years.

Even after she believed she erased local copies.

They opened the most recent footage.

Vanessa entered that evening carrying the silver case.

She read Rachel’s note from Point Dume.

Then lost control.

She screamed.

Threw objects.

Opened the silver case.

Inside were passports.

Cash.

A handgun.

And documents.

She began destroying papers.

Then Dr. Hale entered.

Ethan froze.

Hale was supposed to be cooperating with investigators.

Vanessa shouted:

“You told me Rachel’s backup was gone!”

Hale replied:

“I thought it was.”

“You thought?”

“She was dying, Vanessa!”

“And still smarter than you!”

Hale paced.

“We need to leave.”

“No.”

“What are you doing?”

Vanessa held up a passport.

“I’m taking Sophie.”

Ethan’s blood ran cold.

Hale stared at her.

“You cannot take that child.”

“She is the only person Ethan will trade everything for.”

“That’s kidnapping.”

Vanessa laughed.

“Now you discover ethics?”

Hale looked sick.

Then said:

“I won’t help you.”

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You already did.”

The footage ended when Vanessa unplugged the local system.

But cloud audio continued another thirty seconds.

Hale said:

“If you go near Sophie again, I’ll tell Ethan what happened to Rachel.”

Silence.

Then Vanessa’s voice.

“You mean what you did to Rachel.”

The audio stopped.

Ethan looked at Torres.

Hale knew more.

Perhaps enough to prove Vanessa had deliberately accelerated Rachel’s decline.

But before they could call him, Torres received a message.

Dr. Martin Hale had vanished from protective custody.

His escort vehicle was found abandoned.

Blood on the passenger seat.

And Hale’s phone contained one outgoing text.

To Ethan.

May you like

Two words.

SAVE SOPHIE.
