Chapter 13 - Sophie Did the One Thing Vanessa Never ExpectedThe old Cole Marina had been abandoned for nearly a decade.

Rusting warehouses lined the water.
Several private slips remained usable.
Thomas directed police toward the southern dock.
“That was where my boat left the night I disappeared.”
Ethan looked at him.
“You staged your death here?”
“Yes.”
“With Vanessa?”
Thomas’s face tightened.
“She planned it.”
Ethan almost laughed at the irony.
Vanessa had returned to the birthplace of her greatest lie.
Now every officer in Los Angeles County seemed to be closing in.
But Vanessa still had Sophie.
That gave her power.
Her black SUV sat near the warehouse.
Empty.
Hale’s blood stained the passenger seat.
Footprints led toward the water.
Ethan ran.
Torres shouted after him.
He ignored her.
At the end of the dock, a thirty-foot motor yacht rocked against its ropes.
Engine running.
Vanessa stood aboard.
One arm around Sophie.
A handgun in her other hand.
Ethan stopped.
“Mom.”
Vanessa looked exhausted.
Hair disordered.
Elegant clothing dirty.
For the first time in Ethan’s life, she looked her age.
Maybe older.
Sophie’s eyes found him.
“Daddy!”
Vanessa tightened her arm.
“Stay there.”
Ethan raised his hands.
“I’m staying.”
“Where’s the drive?”
“With me.”
“Show me.”
He removed a black flash drive from his pocket.
A copy.
The real evidence was already federal property.
Vanessa didn’t know that.
“Throw it.”
“No.”
Her gun lifted.
Thomas appeared several yards behind Ethan.
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“Tommy.”
Thomas stopped.
“Let Sophie go.”
Vanessa laughed.
“You don’t get to become honorable now.”
“I’m not.”
“Good.”
“I’m a coward who let you control me for fifteen years.”
Her jaw tightened.
Thomas continued.
“But Ethan doesn’t have to repeat that.”
Vanessa looked at her son.
“He already has.”
Ethan stayed calm.
“Maybe.”
“You abandoned Sophie with me every time you traveled.”
“Yes.”
“You ignored Rachel when she warned you.”
“Yes.”
Vanessa seemed surprised.
“I failed them.”
Sophie stared at Ethan.
He continued.
“And I’ll spend the rest of my life making sure Sophie knows that failure was mine.”
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
“You’re trying to manipulate me.”
“No.”
Ethan stepped closer.
“You taught me what manipulation looks like.”
“Stay back.”
He stopped.
Sophie suddenly spoke.
“Grandma?”
Vanessa looked down.
“What?”
“I have to potty.”
The absurdity of the request stunned everyone.
Vanessa blinked.
“What?”
“I really have to go.”
“Sophie—”
“I’m gonna pee.”
Even Torres, approaching silently behind a warehouse wall, seemed frozen.
Vanessa cursed.
For half a second, she looked away from Ethan.
Sophie did something no one expected.
She bit Vanessa’s arm.
Hard.
Vanessa screamed.
Sophie dropped.
The gun fired.
A shot exploded across the marina.
Ethan ran.
Sophie crawled across the deck.
Vanessa grabbed for her.
Thomas lunged from the dock and caught Vanessa’s wrist.
The gun fired again.
Water erupted beside the boat.
Ethan jumped aboard.
He grabbed Sophie and pulled her behind him.
Vanessa struck Thomas across the face with the gun.
He fell.
Police shouted.
“DROP THE WEAPON!”
Vanessa backed toward the stern.
Her face transformed again.
Instantly.
Her gun lowered.
Her shoulders shook.
She touched her forehead.
“No…”
Ethan stared.
Not again.
Vanessa looked around.
Her eyes became vacant.
“Ethan?”
Police surrounded the boat.
Vanessa let the gun fall.
“Where am I?”
Even now.
Even here.
The same performance.
“I don’t remember.”
Sophie clung to Ethan.
“She’s lying.”
Vanessa looked at the officers.
“I think something happened to me.”
Torres boarded carefully.
“Vanessa Cole, keep your hands visible.”
Vanessa began crying.
“I don’t understand.”
Sophie suddenly pointed upward.
Everyone followed her finger.
A marina security camera overlooked the dock.
Red light blinking.
Ethan almost laughed.
Vanessa saw it.
Her face changed.
The terror returned.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
Sophie whispered:
“The camera remembers again.”
Torres handcuffed Vanessa.
As officers led her away, Vanessa looked at Ethan.
The helpless act disappeared.
“You think this ends because of a camera?”
Ethan held Sophie tighter.
“No.”
He looked at his mother.
“It ends because she stopped being afraid of you.”
Vanessa’s eyes moved to Sophie.
For the first time, the little girl did not hide.
Then Vanessa smiled.
A small, terrible smile.
“You still don’t know what Rachel found.”
Ethan’s stomach tightened.
Torres pulled Vanessa away.
But Ethan knew immediately that the threat mattered.
Because Vanessa had lost everything and still believed one secret could hurt him.
And when federal investigators opened the final encrypted folder on Rachel’s drive that afternoon, Ethan discovered why.
The folder contained his name.
May you like
But the documents inside were not about Ethan.
They were about Sophie.
