Chapter 12 - Vanessa Came for Sophie Before SunriseEthan drove back toward the protected house with two police vehicles ahead and two behind.

He called Sophie’s security team.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

His heart started pounding.

“Faster.”

Torres was in the passenger seat.

“We’re already pushing.”

“Call local units.”

“They’re moving.”

Thomas sat in back.

His face was gray.

“She’ll use Sophie to make you destroy the ledger.”

“I know.”

“No.”

Thomas leaned forward.

“You don’t understand Vanessa when she feels cornered.”

Ethan turned.

“I watched her shove my daughter toward garbage.”

“That was Vanessa believing she still had control.”

“What happens when she doesn’t?”

Thomas looked away.

“That’s what scares me.”

They reached the protected house at 4:18 a.m.

The exterior lights were off.

Gate open.

One guard lay unconscious near the driveway.

Alive.

Torres drew her weapon.

Tactical officers entered.

Ethan was ordered to remain outside.

He lasted twelve seconds.

Then ran in behind them.

“Sophie!”

No answer.

Bedroom.

Empty.

Yellow blanket thrown on the floor.

The replacement stuffed rabbit Ethan had bought that evening lay beside the bed.

Bathroom.

Empty.

Kitchen.

Empty.

Then a small sound.

Closet.

Ethan ripped it open.

Sophie’s child-security officer sat inside, wrists bound.

“She took her.”

Ethan’s knees nearly failed.

“When?”

“Ten minutes.”

“How?”

“Vanessa had Hale.”

“What?”

“She brought him to the door bleeding. We opened to provide emergency aid.”

A trap.

Hale had been bait.

“Where’s Hale?”

“Garage.”

They found him unconscious but alive.

Gunshot wound through the shoulder.

He regained consciousness while paramedics worked.

“Vanessa…”

“Where did she take Sophie?”

“I don’t know.”

Ethan grabbed the side of the stretcher.

“Think.”

“She mentioned the ocean.”

“What ocean?”

“She said she wanted everything to end where Thomas should have died.”

Thomas went pale.

“The marina.”

“What?”

“The old family marina.”

The location of Thomas’s staged boating accident.

Vanessa was returning to the origin of the lie.

Ethan’s phone rang.

Vanessa.

He answered instantly.

“Put Sophie on.”

“Daddy?”

Her tiny voice came through.

Ethan closed his eyes.

“I’m here.”

“I want to go home.”

“I know.”

“Grandma says you have to give her Mommy’s computer.”

“The drive?”

“Yes.”

Vanessa took the phone.

“You have one hour.”

“If you hurt her—”

“I have never wanted to hurt Sophie.”

Ethan almost laughed.

“You’re still saying that?”

“She fights me.”

“She’s four.”

“She has Rachel’s stubbornness.”

“She has courage.”

Vanessa went silent.

Ethan remembered Rachel’s instruction.

Let her talk.

“Maybe you’re right,” he said.

Torres looked at him.

Vanessa sounded suspicious.

“About what?”

“Rachel made Sophie hate you.”

“Yes.”

“She turned me against you.”

“Yes.”

“You were only trying to hold the family together.”

Vanessa exhaled.

“That’s all I have ever done.”

Ethan swallowed his disgust.

“What happened with Rachel, Mom?”

“Not now.”

“I need to understand before I hand you the only evidence protecting us.”

Silence.

Then Vanessa said:

“Rachel thought she was morally superior because she was dying.”

Ethan’s fist tightened.

“She kept asking questions.”

“She threatened everything.”

“So you asked Hale to medicate her.”

“She needed sleep.”

“Hale says you switched the pills.”

“He’s a coward.”

“Did you?”

Another pause.

“I increased what he had already prescribed.”

Torres’s eyes widened.

Direct admission.

Ethan felt the world shake.

“How much?”

“Not enough to kill her.”

“You’re sure?”

“She was dying anyway!”

Sophie began crying somewhere in the background.

Ethan forced himself not to break.

Vanessa continued:

“I gave you peace. Do you remember how agitated Rachel was before? The accusations? The notebooks? After I helped her, she slept.”

“She slept through days she could’ve had with Sophie.”

“She had no future.”

Ethan nearly lost control.

Then Sophie’s voice came faintly through the phone.

“Mommy had me.”

Vanessa stopped.

Ethan closed his eyes.

Sophie had heard.

The little girl continued.

“She had Daddy.”

Vanessa snapped:

“Be quiet.”

“No!”

A slap-like sound came through.

Ethan’s blood froze.

“Sophie!”

The phone moved.

Vanessa cursed.

Then Sophie screamed:

“Daddy, there’s a boat!”

The call disconnected.

Thomas was already moving.

“The marina.”

They raced toward the coast.

Torres coordinated harbor patrol.

Helicopters.

Roadblocks.

Ethan stared at the dark horizon as dawn approached.

Vanessa had spent years controlling everyone by making them afraid of what would happen if they resisted.

Rachel resisted anyway.

Sophie had too.

Now Ethan understood his job.

Not to protect the Cole family name.

Not to recover the money.

Not even to punish Vanessa.

First he had to bring his daughter home.

Everything else could burn.
