Chapter 1 - The White Apron in the Closet DoorGraham had less than ten seconds to hide the woman in his bedroom.

And the woman was not a stranger.
Brooke Reynolds had worked inside the Caldwell mansion for almost two years.
She knew where Rebecca kept the Christmas dishes, which hallway floorboard squeaked after midnight, how Oliver liked the crust removed from his sandwiches, and exactly how Graham took his coffee when his wife wasn't home.
She also knew what his hands felt like around her waist.
The sound of a car door slamming outside made Graham go pale.
He crossed to the bedroom window.
Rebecca's black SUV sat in the circular driveway.
“That can't be her.”
Brooke grabbed her blouse from the floor.
“You said she wasn't coming back until tomorrow.”
“She wasn't.”
Footsteps sounded downstairs.
Graham spun around.
“Closet.”
Brooke stared at him.
“What?”
“Get in the closet.”
“Graham—”
“Now.”
There was no time to argue.
Brooke rushed barefoot across the thick carpet, still wearing the white housekeeping apron she'd put back on after arriving through the service entrance.
She stepped inside the walk-in closet.
Graham pushed the door shut.
Neither noticed the corner of Brooke's apron caught between the doors.
A small triangle of white fabric remained visible.
Graham grabbed his jacket, ran a hand through his hair, and hurried downstairs.
Rebecca was standing in the foyer.
Thirty-three years old, elegant without trying, brown hair pulled loosely behind her head.
She had one hand on the handle of her suitcase.
Seven-year-old Oliver stood beside her with his dinosaur backpack.
Graham forced his breathing to slow.
“Rebecca?”
She smiled.
“Surprise.”
He crossed the marble floor and hugged her.
For one dangerous second, Brooke's perfume seemed trapped on his shirt.
Rebecca didn't react.
Graham kissed her cheek.
“I missed you.”
“That's sweet considering I was gone twenty-two hours.”
“You know what I mean.”
Oliver ran toward him.
“Dad!”
Graham hugged his son.
His eyes moved toward the staircase.
If he could get Rebecca out of the house for an hour, Brooke could slip away.
He smiled.
“Actually, this is perfect.”
Rebecca frowned.
“What is?”
“I made dinner reservations.”
“You did?”
“At Le Jardin.”
“Tomorrow?”
Graham didn't miss a beat.
“I was going to surprise you when you got back.”
Rebecca smiled.
“Can we make it tonight?”
“Of course.”
He picked up her suitcase.
“Don't even unpack.”
Rebecca laughed.
“Graham, I just spent three hours driving back from Boston.”
“Exactly. Let somebody cook for you.”
He was almost there.
Then Oliver ran upstairs.
“I need Captain Rex!”
“Oliver,” Graham called.
But his son disappeared around the landing.
Graham's stomach tightened.
Rebecca was checking messages on her phone.
“Give me ten minutes to change.”
“No.”
The word came too quickly.
Rebecca looked up.
Graham smiled.
“I mean, you look beautiful.”
She raised an eyebrow.
“In travel clothes?”
“Especially in travel clothes.”
Before she could answer, Oliver's voice floated from upstairs.
“Mom?”
Rebecca called back.
“What?”
“Why is Miss Brooke's clothes in Dad's closet?”
Everything inside Graham stopped.
Rebecca's smile disappeared.
“What?”
Graham moved toward the stairs.
“Oliver, buddy—”
“Her white thing.”
Rebecca followed.
Graham reached the bedroom first.
Oliver stood near the closet, pointing.
The corner of a white apron was still trapped outside.
Graham felt blood drain from his face.
“Oliver.”
The boy looked confused.
“You said she got fired.”
Rebecca stopped behind Graham.
Silence.
“What did he say?”
Graham turned.
“Rebecca, I can explain.”
Oliver looked at his mother.
“Dad said Miss Brooke got fired today.”
Inside the closet, something moved.
Rebecca heard it.
Her eyes shifted toward the door.
“Graham.”
“Let's go downstairs.”
“Open it.”
“Rebecca—”
“Open the closet.”
He didn't move.
Rebecca walked past him.
Graham caught her wrist.
“Don't.”
That was the worst thing he could have done.
Rebecca looked at his hand.
Then at his face.
“Take your hand off me.”
He did.
Rebecca opened the closet.
Brooke stood inside.
Barefoot.
Hair disheveled.
Face burning with humiliation.
Rebecca didn't scream.
That made Graham more afraid.
Her eyes moved over Brooke.
Then Graham.
Then the bed.
The sheets had been hastily straightened.
One pillow lay on the floor.
Rebecca understood.
Brooke looked down.
“Mrs. Caldwell…”
“Don't.”
Rebecca's voice was barely above a whisper.
Oliver stood behind her.
“Mom?”
Rebecca turned immediately.
“Go to your room.”
“But—”
“Oliver.”
Something in her voice made him obey.
He disappeared into the hallway.
Rebecca waited until his door closed.
Then looked at Brooke.
“How long?”
Brooke's eyes filled with tears.
Graham stepped forward.
“This is between us.”
Rebecca turned slowly.
“You put the housekeeper in our bedroom closet and now you're telling me what's between us?”
“It isn't what you're thinking.”
Brooke looked at him.
That sentence seemed to anger her.
Rebecca noticed.
“Really?”
Graham's jaw tightened.
“Brooke came to talk.”
“Barefoot?”
“She spilled something.”
Brooke actually laughed.
A broken, bitter sound.
Graham shot her a look.
Rebecca caught that too.
“Brooke.”
The younger woman looked at her.
“I need you to tell me the truth.”
Graham interrupted.
“She doesn't need to tell you anything.”
Brooke's expression changed.
Fear.
Not embarrassment.
Fear.
Rebecca saw it.
“What are you afraid of?”
Brooke didn't answer.
Graham stepped between them.
“Rebecca, please.”
She stared at her husband.
Then remembered Oliver's words.
“You told our son Brooke was fired.”
Graham froze.
Rebecca looked at Brooke.
“Did he fire you?”
Brooke swallowed.
“No.”
“Then why did he tell everyone he did?”
Graham's face tightened.
Brooke looked directly at Rebecca.
“Because he didn't want anyone asking why I kept coming here.”
The room went silent.
Rebecca felt her marriage split open.
“How many times?”
Brooke's tears fell.
“Mrs. Caldwell—”
“How many?”
“Rebecca,” Graham warned.
Brooke ignored him.
“For six months.”
Rebecca stopped breathing.
Graham said:
“That's enough.”
Brooke looked at him.
“No.”
Something changed in her.
She stepped out of the closet.
“I'm done protecting you.”
Graham's face hardened.
“Be careful.”
Rebecca heard the threat underneath.
Brooke did too.
She turned toward Rebecca.
“You think the worst thing your husband has been doing is sleeping with me.”
Rebecca stared.
Brooke's voice dropped.
“It isn't.”

And for the first time since opening the closet—
Graham looked genuinely terrified.
