Chapter 9 - The Woman Who Saw Rebecca’s Brother DieClaire Caldwell had been seventeen when Daniel Mercer died.

Graham's older sister.

Rebecca had never met her.

She had never even known she existed.

Eleanor explained during the drive back.

“Claire and Daniel were dating.”

Rebecca stared out the window.

“My brother dated Graham's sister?”

“For a few months.”

“Why was this never mentioned?”

“Because after Daniel died, Claire disappeared from our lives.”

“What happened?”

Daniel had been twenty-one.

Claire seventeen.

They met near the Hudson.

Arthur disapproved of the relationship because of the age difference.

Daniel didn't care.

One summer evening, Daniel took the family's small boat onto the river.

Claire went with him.

A storm moved in quickly.

The boat overturned.

Claire reached shore.

Daniel didn't.

His body was recovered two days later.

Official ruling:

Accidental drowning.

Rebecca had been twelve.

She remembered almost nothing beyond grief.

“What does this have to do with Graham?”

Eleanor's voice shook.

“Claire blamed your father.”

“Why?”

“She said Arthur forced Daniel to end the relationship.”

“That doesn't cause a boating accident.”

“No.”

“But?”

“Claire claimed Daniel was upset that night because Arthur threatened to cut him off.”

Rebecca looked at her mother.

“Did he?”

“Yes.”

Her father had always been harder on Daniel.

The oldest child.

Future successor.

Higher expectations.

“What happened to Claire?”

“Her family moved.”

“And Graham?”

“He was fourteen.”

Rebecca's pulse changed.

Graham had known the Mercers long before meeting her.

He had never said one word.

Their first meeting happened at a charity dinner fourteen years later.

He acted as though Rebecca's name meant nothing until they were introduced.

“Did Dad know Graham was Claire's brother?”

“I don't know.”

“He must have.”

“Maybe not immediately.”

Rebecca thought of Arthur's distrust.

Maybe he had eventually recognized him.

Maybe that was when he began investigating.

They reached the mansion.

Police cars filled the driveway.

Graham and Claire were gone.

A security guard had been found unconscious near the rear hallway.

Alive.

A bump on his head.

The pendant was missing from Rebecca's bedroom.

So were several documents.

Brooke stood beside the closet where the entire nightmare began.

“This is because of me.”

Rebecca turned.

“No.”

“If I hadn't—”

“You had an affair with my husband.”

Brooke flinched.

Rebecca continued.

“That was your decision.”

“Yes.”

“But everything else is Graham's.”

Brooke nodded.

Rebecca appreciated that they could hold both truths.

Detective Bell entered.

“We have video.”

Security cameras captured Graham entering with Claire.

The woman was forty-one now.

Dark blonde hair.

Thin.

Elegant.

Rebecca saw something familiar in her face.

Not personally.

From an old photograph.

Daniel's room once contained a picture of a girl near the river.

Rebecca had forgotten.

Until now.

Claire.

“She took the pendant?”

“Yes.”

“What else?”

“Files from Arthur's study.”

“The cabinet was already empty.”

“Not that cabinet.”

Police showed her video.

Claire walked directly to a bookshelf and removed a hidden panel Rebecca didn't know existed.

Inside were envelopes.

She took them.

Graham didn't show her the hiding place.

Claire already knew.

“She'd been here before,” Rebecca said.

Eleanor nodded slowly.

“Daniel used to bring her.”

Rebecca looked at her mother.

“Could she know Dad's hiding places?”

“Possibly.”

Brooke suddenly spoke.

“Graham said something once.”

Everyone turned.

“He said his sister knew what Arthur stole from their family.”

“What did Arthur steal?”

“He never explained.”

Eleanor's face changed.

“Money.”

Rebecca stared.

“What?”

“After Daniel died, Arthur paid Claire's family.”

“How much?”

“I don't know.”

“Why?”

“He called it assistance.”

Rachel looked skeptical.

“How much assistance requires secrecy?”

Eleanor shook her head.

“I never saw the amount.”

They searched old estate records.

Found it.

$2.7 million.

Paid to Caldwell Family Holdings eighteen months after Daniel's death.

Rebecca stared at Graham's last name.

“This is where his startup money came from.”

Rachel nodded.

“Part of it.”

Arthur paid the Caldwell family millions.

Years later, that money moved through companies and eventually became Graham's investment capital.

“So Dad funded him.”

Indirectly.

“Yes.”

“Why would Dad pay them?”

Eleanor whispered:

“To keep Claire quiet.”

Rebecca looked at her.

“About what?”

“I don't know.”

“Mom.”

“I swear.”

Then Rebecca remembered the reserve account.

Created after Daniel's death.

Thirty-one million dollars.

Secret authorization.

Graham and Claire weren't simply running from financial fraud.

They believed Arthur had hidden something connected to their brother.

Detective Bell's phone rang.

He listened.

Then looked at Rebecca.

“We found Graham.”

“Where?”

“Not Graham exactly.”

“What does that mean?”

“His phone.”

It had been abandoned near the old river house.

Alongside it—

a fresh photograph.

Rebecca picked it up.

Daniel and Claire standing together in front of the river house.

On the back, someone had written:

ASK ELEANOR WHY DANIEL WAS AFRAID TO GO HOME.

Rebecca slowly looked at her mother.

Eleanor had gone completely white.

“Mom?”

Her lips trembled.

“There was a fight.”

“What fight?”

“The night Daniel died.”

“With Dad?”

Eleanor shook her head.

“With me.”

Rebecca stared.

“What did you do?”

May you like

Eleanor began crying.

“I told him Claire was pregnant.”
