Chapter 11 - Claire’s ConfessionClaire refused to come to the mansion.

She chose a police station in White Plains.

Brooke sat across from her mother behind a glass interview window.

Rebecca watched from another room with Detective Bell.

Claire Reynolds looked exhausted.

Twenty years older than the photograph Rebecca remembered.

But unmistakably the same girl who had once loved Daniel.

Brooke's first question was simple.

“Who is my father?”

Claire started crying.

“Mom.”

“I'm sorry.”

“Who?”

“Daniel Mercer.”

Brooke closed her eyes.

Rebecca felt tears sting her own.

Daniel had a daughter.

Her brother had lived long enough to know he would become a father.

Then died believing he never would meet his child.

Brooke whispered:

“Did Uncle Graham know?”

Claire's expression changed.

“Yes.”

Brooke stood.

“I need a minute.”

Claire reached toward her.

“Brooke—”

“Don't touch me.”

She walked out.

Rebecca met her in the hallway.

Neither knew what to say.

Brooke looked at her.

“So you're my aunt.”

Rebecca's voice broke.

“Yes.”

Brooke laughed through tears.

“And I slept with your husband.”

The sentence was almost too absurd to survive.

Rebecca didn't laugh.

“Graham used both of us.”

“That doesn't erase what I did.”

“No.”

Brooke appreciated the honesty.

“But it changes what he did.”

Yes.

It did.

They returned.

Claire told the full story.

After Daniel died, she discovered Arthur intended to seek custody rights once the baby was born.

Not because he wanted to take Brooke away permanently.

Because Claire was seventeen and emotionally collapsing.

But Claire's mother convinced her the Mercers would steal the child.

They moved to Arizona.

Brooke was born there.

Claire changed her surname.

Arthur eventually located them.

Instead of going to court, he created the educational trust.

“He sent money?”

“Yes.”

“Did you use it?”

“For Brooke.”

Rebecca looked at her niece.

College.

Housing.

Everything Claire had called scholarships and family savings.

“What about the reserve account?”

Claire nodded.

“Arthur created it for Brooke.”

Thirty-one million.

Brooke looked horrified.

“I don't want it.”

“That isn't the point,” Rachel said.

Claire continued.

Arthur planned to reveal everything when Brooke turned twenty-five.

But he died two years before.

“Why didn't you tell her?”

Claire looked ashamed.

“Fear.”

The family disease.

“What did Graham know?”

“Everything.”

Claire told her younger brother when Brooke was nineteen.

She thought he should know his niece.

Graham had already reentered the Mercer orbit.

He was dating Rebecca.

Claire begged him not to reveal Brooke until she was ready.

“He promised.”

Instead, years later, Graham hired Brooke as a housekeeper through an agency.

Rebecca stared.

“What?”

Brooke looked equally shocked.

“I applied.”

“Yes.”

Claire nodded.

“But Graham asked the agency to send you.”

“He chose me?”

“Yes.”

Brooke's face emptied.

The entire beginning had been engineered.

Graham watched his niece enter Rebecca's house.

Watched her become trusted.

Waited.

“Why?” Rebecca asked.

“Arthur's reserve account.”

Claire believed Graham learned about it while investigating family records.

But he couldn't access it.

The account's eventual beneficiary was Brooke.

However, before transfer, two family verifications were required.

Rebecca as Arthur's living child.

Brooke as Daniel's biological child.

DNA.

Documents.

Codes.

Graham needed both women close.

“He married me for access?”

Claire looked at Rebecca.

“I don't know when he learned about the account.”

“When did he know I was Arthur's daughter?”

“Obviously before he married you.”

Rebecca almost laughed.

“That's not what I meant.”

Maybe Graham originally loved her.

Maybe greed came later.

She wasn't sure which answer hurt more.

“And the affair?”

Claire began crying harder.

“I didn't know until Brooke told me three months ago.”

“You knew?”

Brooke stared at her mother.

“I told you I was seeing a married man. I never said Graham.”

“You showed me a picture.”

Brooke froze.

Claire nodded.

“I recognized his watch.”

“Why didn't you stop me?”

“I tried.”

“You said leave him because married men don't leave.”

“I couldn't tell you why.”

“You could have said he's your uncle!”

Claire's face crumpled.

“Yes.”

Brooke stood again.

Rebecca understood.

Some truths were so delayed they became crimes of their own.

Detective Bell entered.

“Claire, where is Graham?”

She looked at him.

“I don't know.”

“You were with him at the mansion.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“He said he'd found Arthur's reserve authorization.”

“Did he?”

“He has the watch and pendant.”

“Where did you go afterward?”

“The river house.”

“We found his phone.”

“He left it intentionally.”

“What was he looking for?”

“A letter.”

“What letter?”

Claire looked toward Rebecca.

“Daniel wrote something the night he died.”

Rebecca froze.

“To who?”

“To me.”

“What did it say?”

“I never received it.”

“Then how do you know?”

“Arthur told me years later.”

“What was in it?”

Claire swallowed.

“Daniel said he knew the boat had been sabotaged.”

The room went silent.

Rebecca's breath disappeared.

“Sabotaged?”

“Yes.”

“The accident…”

“May not have been an accident.”

“Who did Daniel suspect?”

Claire's eyes filled.

“He wrote one name.”

Rebecca felt cold.

“Whose?”

May you like

Claire looked toward Brooke.

“Graham's father.”
