Chapter 14 - THE BOX CALEB LEFT BEHINDWhen Noah was eight, Rebecca opened the last sealed portion of Caleb’s personal-effects box.

She had known it existed.
She simply avoided.
Noah sat beside her on living-room floor.
“Treasure?”
“Sort of.”
Inside:
watch.
notebooks.
old dog tags.
a photograph of Rebecca asleep holding baby Noah.
receipts.
a broken pen.
two unopened packets of gum.
Noah laughed.
“Dad kept trash.”
“Yes.”
Then a small wrapped package.
Label:
NOAH — BIRTHDAY
It had been bought weeks before Caleb died.
Noah looked.
“For me?”
“Yes.”
“What birthday?”
“Probably your third.”
He was eight.
“Can open?”
Rebecca hesitated only second.
“Of course.”
Inside was a wooden model airplane.
Simple.
For toddler.
Noah smiled anyway.
“This baby toy.”
“You were baby.”
“I wasn’t baby.”
“You were two.”
“Not baby.”
“Sure.”
He moved plane across floor.
Rebecca found receipt.
Two days before emergency mission.
Ordinary purchase.
Her chest hurt.
Then a folded list.
Heading:
HOME
Tell Rebecca about Pennsylvania.
Ask about counseling.
Fix porch light.
Sell motorcycle.
Take Noah to aquarium.
Learn pancakes.
Stop volunteering for every damn thing.
Call Mom.
Find daycare near new post.
Be boring.
Rebecca cried.
Noah looked worried.
“What?”
She showed last line.
“Dad wanted to be boring.”
Noah laughed.
“Why?”
“Because boring means being home.”
“Dad boring?”
“Never got enough chance.”
Noah became quiet.
He touched model plane.
“Can I keep this in room?”
“Yes.”
The list changed porch light.
Rebecca had already stopped leaving it on nightly.
But now she learned Caleb intended fix it.
Not because symbol.
Because fixture flickered.
This made her laugh.
She had turned faulty porch light into grief shrine.
Caleb would have teased mercilessly.
That night she unscrewed old bulb.
Replaced fixture herself? Aaron could help but she chooses electrician maybe.
She hired electrician.
No symbolic self-sufficiency required.
The new light worked.
She turned it on when needed.
Off when not.
May you like
Ordinary.
Exactly what Caleb wanted.
