Chapter 19 - NOAH READS THE WHOLE REPORTAt sixteen, Noah asked for the full investigation.

Rebecca did not answer immediately.

“Why?”

“Because everyone else knows.”

“Not everyone.”

“You do.”

“Foster.”

“Owen.”

“Yes.”

“It’s my dad.”

She nodded.

“Okay.”

They read together over several weeks.

No dumping hundreds pages.

No secret.

Noah learned 14:08.

14:20.

14:32.

14:44.

14:46.

He learned Foster authorized continuation.

He learned Caleb reentered before clearance.

His reaction surprised Rebecca.

He became angry at Foster.

Not contractors first.

Not system.

Foster.

“Why did he let them stay?”

Rebecca said:

“He made judgment.”

“Wrong.”

“Yes, knowing outcome.”

“No.”

“Wrong.”

She did not defend.

Noah avoided Foster for two months.

Foster did not pressure.

No gifts.

No calls beyond birthday text.

Rebecca let.

Relationships need room for anger.

Eventually Noah asked to meet.

They sat on porch.

No uniforms.

Noah:

“Why didn’t you stop?”

Foster answered:

“I thought south route safe enough to continue evacuation.”

“You were wrong.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you make Dad stay out?”

“I ordered hold.”

“He moved anyway.”

“You were colonel.”

“Yes.”

“So make him.”

Foster looked.

“I could not physically reach him in time.”

“Could you radio stronger?”

“Yes.”

“Would it matter?”

“I don’t know.”

Noah hated.

“Do you think it’s your fault?”

“Partly.”

Rebecca watched from window but did not intervene.

Noah:

“Partly how much?”

Foster smiled sadly.

“Responsibility doesn’t come percentages.”

“That sounds lawyer.”

“Sorry.”

Noah looked away.

“I blamed you.”

“Fair.”

“I still kind of do.”

“Fair.”

“Do you blame Dad?”

Foster took breath.

“I wish he waited.”

“I understand why he didn’t.”

“Those are both true.”

Noah nodded slowly.

This was mature grief: multiple responsibilities without one villain.

Months later relationship resumed.

Different.

More honest.

Noah stopped seeing Foster as officer who could fix everything.

He saw man who made decision and lived with outcome.

That made forgiveness possible without innocence.

Noah decided study mechanical engineering.

Foster asked:

“Because dad?”

“No.”

“Robots.”

“Good.”

He chose college in North Carolina.

Rebecca cried.

Not because military legacy.

Because son leaving.

May you like

Ordinary parental grief.

Caleb wanted.
