Chapter 18 - THE PEOPLE CALEB HELPED COME HOMEWhen Noah was fifteen, a small reunion marked a major anniversary of the emergency operation.

Rebecca initially declined.

Then Owen called.

“No speeches about heroes.”

“No press.”

“Just people.”

She asked Noah.

He wanted.

They met at community hall.

Owen now married to Jenna, with young son.

Specialist Harris—now civilian logistics manager—attended.

A medic named Teresa? Use different Monica Hale, nurse who had been evacuated.

An engineer.

Several.

They told stories.

Not all about Caleb.

About flood.

Bad food.

Confusion.

Then Caleb.

Harris:

“He cursed more than citation mentions.”

Noah smiled.

Owen:

“He drank terrible coffee then complained like someone forced.”

Monica:

“He gave away dry socks then complained feet cold.”

Noah laughed.

These people were alive.

That fact once made Rebecca angry.

Now it gave shape to Caleb’s choice.

Owen pulled wallet.

Inside a dried yellow leaf.

Noah frowned.

“What is that?”

“You gave me when you were five.”

“Why keep garbage?”

Owen smiled.

“Because I spent years thinking I had to earn being alive.”

“You handed me leaf because you thought it was good.”

Noah embarrassed.

“I don’t remember.”

“That’s why it mattered.”

Noah became serious.

“Did Dad save you?”

“Yes.”

“Do you still feel guilty?”

“Sometimes.”

“Less.”

“Why?”

“Because your mom yelled at me.”

Rebecca laughed across room.

Owen continued:

“And because therapy.”

“And because my life is not payment.”

Noah looked at Owen’s son running.

“Dad would hate if you wasted it.”

Owen nodded.

“That’s what I finally understood.”

Noah walked away later with deeper understanding.

Not:

Dad died so Owen lived.

That equation too simple.

Caleb chose to help.

Owen lived.

Both facts.

No debt.

At home Noah told Rebecca:

“I think I get why everyone says Dad hero.”

She braced.

“But?”

“I still think he was idiot.”

Rebecca burst out laughing.

“He could be both.”

May you like

“Adults.”

“Yes.”
