Chapter 15 - LEAH REFUSES THE ENVELOPEVincent made one mistake.

He tried to give Leah money personally.
Not wages.
A gift.
$50,000.
He placed an envelope on the table.
“For Rory.”
Leah stared.
“No.”
Vincent was surprised.
“You haven’t opened it.”
“I know what envelopes from rich men look like.”
He almost smiled.
“Take it.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because then the story becomes you saved us.”
Vincent stopped.
Leah continued.
“You didn’t.”
“You fixed something your company let happen.”
He leaned back.
Sharp.
Accurate.
“The back pay is ours.”
“Yes.”
“The penalties are ours.”
“Yes.”
“Anything legally owed is ours.”
“Yes.”
“This?”
She tapped the envelope.
“This makes me your charity.”
Vincent looked at Rory coloring nearby.
“I was trying to help.”
“I know.”
“That can still be the wrong help.”
He laughed softly.
“You and your daughter are exhausting.”
Leah smiled.
“Good.”
Vincent took the envelope back.
Then asked:
“What would help?”
Leah thought.
“Emergency meals for employees when payroll errors happen.”
“Temporary transportation money.”
“Advance access to earned wages under strict rules.”
“Somewhere people can ask about pay without their manager finding out.”
Not Leah-specific.
System.
Vincent liked that better.
A fund was built.
Not named after Rory.
Leah insisted.
No purple-star logo.
No publicity.
May you like
Just access.
That was better.
