Chapter 21 - RORY’S PURPLE CRAYONRory turned six.

She no longer remembered every purple star.

Leah did.

The work log stayed in a folder at home.

Not framed.

Not displayed.

One afternoon Rory found it.

“Why did I draw these?”

Leah sat beside her.

“You remember when my paychecks didn’t come?”

“A little.”

“These were nights we had very little food.”

Rory stared.

“Because David took money?”

“Partly.”

“Did Mr. Kane fix it?”

Leah thought.

“He helped fix the system.”

“Did he save us?”

Leah smiled.

“No.”

Rory frowned.

“Who did?”

“We did.”

Leah tapped the notebook.

“I kept records.”

“You asked the question.”

“Other workers told the truth.”

“Investigators checked.”

“People changed rules.”

Rory considered.

“That’s a lot of people.”

“Yes.”

Real change usually was.

She picked up a purple crayon.

Then drew one new star on the final empty page.

Leah laughed.

“What’s that?”

“Pizza night.”

This time the star meant they had too much dinner.

Leah liked that better.
