Chapter 11 - CLAIRE’S VERSIONDaniel and Claire met in a lawyer’s conference room.

No children.

No home.

Neutral.

Lauren beside Claire.

Rebecca beside Daniel.

Purpose:

exchange practical information, not reconcile.

Daniel began.

“Were you planning to leave me?”

Claire looked at Lauren.

Then answered.

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Months.”

“Why not tell me?”

“Because every conversation became business meeting.”

“That doesn't answer.”

“You would have negotiated my feelings.”

Daniel almost objected.

Then stopped.

Maybe.

Claire continued:

“I wanted to know what leaving looked like before I said it.”

“Fine.”

“Fine?”

“You were allowed to leave.”

Claire’s face changed.

“Then why are we here?”

“Because you left our children alone. Because you lied. Because money moved behind my back.”

Claire stiffened.

“The money wasn't stolen.”

“I didn’t say stolen.”

“You think it.”

“I think you intentionally made transfers I would have rejected.”

“Yes.”

Honest.

“Why?”

“Because you control everything.”

“Governance controls.”

“You wrote governance.”

“Along with trustees.”

“And everyone knows you get final say.”

Daniel looked at Diane’s bypass and saw kernel truth.

Claire continued:

“Marcus said diversification would protect family assets before Ohio deal.”

“Did you believe?”

“Yes.”

“Did you understand his family entity earned fees?”

Claire hesitated.

“No.”

“Never?”

“I knew Harbor Crest got fees. I didn't know his sister’s trust was connected.”

Daniel watched.

Could be lie.

Selena found no email proving Claire knew.

Accept uncertainty.

“Why did you tell Marcus ‘money will already be gone’?”

Claire closed eyes.

“I said it.”

“I know.”

“I meant moved.”

“Gone from where?”

“From your immediate control.”

There.

“What did you expect that to accomplish for you personally?”

Long pause.

Claire answered:

“I thought if I left after funds were committed, you couldn't pull everything back just because you were angry.”

“Everything?”

“The diversification.”

“Why would I care if you left?”

“Because Marcus was involved.”

“So you knew affair discovery would affect investment.”

“Yes.”

“Then you understood conflict.”

“Yes.”

Important.

Not financial theft.

But knowingly let lover influence family investments while hiding affair.

Severe conflict.

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Did you think you and Marcus would live on that money?”

“No.”

“Did he promise you ownership?”

“No.”

“Did you expect some financial benefit?”

Claire looked at Lauren.

“We discussed possibly investing separately later.”

Not current Calloway funds.

Daniel felt almost disappointed again.

He forced discipline.

Then:

“Why leave Lily?”

Claire’s posture collapsed.

“I thought Diane was coming.”

“You did not confirm.”

“No.”

“You told Lily not to call me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I didn't want you calling while I was with Marcus.”

There.

Simple.

Ugly.

“Did you know you’d be gone almost four hours?”

“No.”

“How long planned?”

“Dinner. Two hours.”

“Still unacceptable.”

“Yes.”

That yes silenced him.

Claire cried.

“I know.”

Daniel watched.

This was woman he married.

Mother of Noah.

Step? Lily is likely biological Claire? Script says her mother Claire. So yes mother of Lily and Noah.

She was not monster.

She made series of selfish decisions.

The distinction did not reduce pain.

It made it intimate.

He asked:

“Did you think about Lily carrying Noah?”

“I thought she’d put him in playpen.”

“Did you tell her that?”

Claire froze.

“No.”

“Did you leave playpen set up?”

“No.”

“Then what did you expect?”

Claire covered face.

“I don’t know.”

That answer hurt most.

She did not plan safe care.

She simply wanted to leave.

After meeting, Daniel sat in car.

Rebecca asked:

“What did you learn?”

“That she didn't plan some huge theft.”

“Probably not.”

“That doesn't make it okay.”

“No.”

“She knowingly hid a conflict.”

“Yes.”

“She wanted money beyond my control because she expected affair fallout.”

“Yes.”

“And she left kids because date mattered more.”

“Yes.”

Daniel stared windshield.

“It’s smaller than what I imagined.”

Rebecca said:

“Smaller plots can destroy families too.”

Exactly.

Then phone buzzed.

Selena.

Need meeting.

Found something in Harbor Crest draft.

May you like

Daniel’s pulse increased.

Maybe bigger layer belonged to Marcus alone.
