Chapter 5 - DIANE SAID IT WAS FOR THE CHILDRENDiane asked to speak with Daniel alone.

He said no.

Not because cruel.

Because the financial investigation involved both.

Rebecca remained.

Diane accepted.

“I need you to understand something.”

Daniel leaned back.

“Try.”

“I never intended to take your money.”

“Our money.”

“Fine.”

“Children’s money?”

“No.”

Diane’s eyes filled.

“I thought I was protecting it.”

Daniel looked toward Rebecca.

She gave nothing.

Diane continued.

“When your father died, he left one instruction about the trust.”

Daniel knew.

Don’t let business ego consume family security.

His father, Michael Calloway, had built first distribution company then watched friends leverage everything during recession.

Daniel hated being compared.

“Marcus used Dad?”

“He reminded me.”

“Convenient.”

“It worked.”

Honest.

Diane described May meeting.

Marcus presented scenarios.

If Ohio acquisition underperformed:

debt covenants tighten;

dividends reduce;

family-holding liquidity shrink;

trust exposure indirectly affected.

All possible.

He showed a diversification portfolio generating stable yield through commercial properties.

Again plausible.

“He said if we waited for Daniel, opportunity would disappear.”

Rebecca asked:

“Did he advise deliberately splitting transfers?”

“Yes.”

“What language?”

Diane thought.

“Existing authority permits phased funding below individual-approval thresholds.”

Cold.

Professional.

Rebecca wrote.

“Did he say hide from Daniel?”

“No.”

“Did you understand result?”

“Yes.”

Important.

Diane could not pretend innocent.

She knowingly bypassed son.

“Why Claire?”

“She agreed.”

Daniel asked:

“Why would Claire care?”

Diane hesitated.

“She was angry at you.”

“About?”

“Everything.”

“Useful.”

Diane frowned.

“She said you were planning financial future as if she didn’t exist.”

Daniel thought.

Prenup.

Family trust.

Industrial expansion.

Claire had asked questions.

He gave summaries.

Maybe dismissed.

Still did not explain affair or secret transfers.

Diane continued:

“Claire said if you knew beforehand, you’d shut it down because you hate losing control.”

“Did she ask what happens if we divorce?”

Diane froze.

Daniel saw.

“She did.”

“When?”

“July.”

“What did she ask?”

“Whether trust assets were marital.”

Rebecca looked sharply.

Diane continued:

“I told her no, generally.”

“Did she ask about family holdings?”

“Yes.”

“And?”

“I told her her rights depend on prenup and asset structure.”

Daniel exhaled.

Now financial motive closer.

But still could be ordinary marital planning.

People contemplating divorce ask.

He asked:

“Did she tell you she was considering leaving?”

“No.”

“Marcus present?”

“Once.”

During divorce-ish question?

Diane thought.

“No.”

Good.

Do not overconnect.

Then Diane looked at Daniel.

“I didn’t know about them.”

“I believe you.”

She started crying.

Those were first kind words he had offered.

Not absolution.

Distinction.

“What do I do now?”

“Cooperate.”

“With everything?”

“Yes.”

“I may lose trustee role.”

Daniel looked at her.

“You probably should.”

That hurt.

Diane nodded.

“I know.”

At home that afternoon, Daniel found Claire waiting.

Rebecca advised not secret-record unless state laws? Connecticut one-party rules could vary for in-person? Better counsel says no unnecessary. They met with Claire’s awareness that counsel may become involved? Daniel alone.

Claire folded arms.

“Who is woman with kids?”

“Temporary caregiver.”

“I am their mother.”

“Yes.”

“Then why—”

“Because yesterday you left them alone.”

“Diane was coming.”

“She didn't.”

“I made a mistake.”

“For almost four hours.”

Claire’s jaw tightened.

“Stop making it sound like I drove across country.”

“You left a seven-year-old responsible for a six-month-old.”

“Lily knows how to hold Noah.”

“That sentence should bother you.”

Claire stared.

Then:

“Fine. I screwed up.”

“Where were you?”

“I told you.”

“Melissa?”

“Yes.”

Daniel reached no evidence physically. He simply said:

“I know about Marcus.”

Claire’s face emptied.

Not denial yet.

“Know what?”

“I watched the security footage.”

Silence.

Daniel continued:

“I saw you leave with him.”

Claire looked away.

“The cameras were supposed to be off inside.”

“They weren't.”

“You were spying?”

“No.”

“I came home to abandoned children.”

She flinched at abandoned.

“They were not abandoned.”

“What word would you prefer?”

“Unsupervised for a short period.”

“Three hours forty-two minutes.”

Claire’s face changed.

She had not realized timestamp.

Then:

“Diane was supposed—”

“Stop.”

Daniel didn’t yell.

“You don't get to use my mother to erase what you chose.”

Claire’s eyes hardened.

“And you don't get to pretend you’re Father of the Year because you happened to walk in.”

There.

He accepted hit.

“I’m not.”

That surprised her.

“I was gone too much.”

“Yes.”

“I left you carrying too much.”

“Yes.”

“I ignored warning signs.”

Claire’s expression softened almost involuntarily.

Then Daniel continued:

“And none of that made Lily your babysitter for a four-hour date with the man advising our family finances.”

Claire shut down.

“Are you sleeping with him?”

Silence.

“Claire.”

“Yes.”

One word.

No performance.

Daniel felt betrayal physically.

Still he did not move.

“How long?”

“Three months.”

“Before or after Westbridge?”

She stared.

“Why are you asking that?”

There.

Too much interest.

Daniel knew.

“The camera recorded audio.”

Claire’s face paled.

“What audio?”

“Marcus asking if I suspected anything.”

“That was about us.”

“Maybe.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“Then you said the money would already be gone.”

Claire froze.

For first time, she looked afraid.

Not guilty.

Afraid.

Daniel whispered:

“What money?”

Claire said nothing.

“Claire.”

She stood.

“You need to talk to my attorney.”

That answered more than denial would.

She left.

Daniel did not stop her.

Because now he knew something important.

The affair had been hidden.

May you like

The money required counsel.

And Claire herself seemed unsure which secret Daniel had actually uncovered.
