Chapter 21 - “I WAS TIRED OF BEING THE ONLY ADULT”Claire’s explanation took nearly a year to become honest.

Not because she kept lying.
Because motives reveal slowly even to person acting.
Therapist asked:
“What did Marcus give you?”
“Attention.”
“More.”
“Admiration.”
“More.”
Claire cried.
“A version of myself that wasn't tired.”
After Noah, she felt swallowed by motherhood.
Daniel traveled.
Diane advised.
Staff came and went.
Everyone said she was lucky.
Beautiful house.
Help.
Money.
Healthy children.
She felt ashamed saying overwhelmed.
Marcus never said:
you should be grateful.
He said:
you deserve a life that belongs to you.
That sentence became permission.
At first:
coffee.
Then texts.
Then hotel.
Then leaving Lily.
Claire said:
“I was tired of being the only adult in house.”
Therapist challenged:
“You had adults.”
“I mean responsible for everything.”
“Was Lily responsible too?”
Claire broke.
“Yes.”
There.
She had claimed sole burden while transferring burden to seven-year-old.
Contradiction.
She finally saw.
Daniel later heard version during mediation.
Claire said:
“You were gone too much.”
“I know.”
“You left me lonely.”
“I know.”
“You assumed money fixed everything.”
“I know.”
She looked frustrated.
“Stop agreeing.”
“Why?”
“Because it makes it harder to be angry.”
Daniel almost smiled.
Then:
“You were allowed to be angry.”
Claire looked at him.
“You were allowed to leave me.”
Silence.
“You were allowed to hate marriage.”
Silence.
“You were allowed to date Marcus after leaving.”
Claire cried.
“But you were never allowed to make Lily carry Noah so you could pretend you were already free.”
That line stayed.
Not because witty.
Because separated her rights from choices.
Claire nodded.
“I know.”
Daniel continued:
“And I was wrong to build a marriage where you felt asking me questions was pointless.”
She looked.
“Thank you.”
“Not reconciliation.”
“I know.”
May you like
They were finally capable of truth without bargaining.
That was closure.
