Chapter 18 — The Truth About Her Graduation

Six months later, Emily returned to the university.
The graduation ceremony had become a painful memory.
But now she understood why.
She had believed success meant appearing wealthy.
She had believed her mother's clothes were embarrassing.
She had believed money defined people.
She was wrong.
Emily walked across the campus alone.
Then she saw Linda.
Her mother wore the same beige cardigan.
The same modest blouse.
The same simple shoes.
Emily smiled.
She ran toward her.
"Mom."
Linda hugged her.
"You came."
"I wouldn't miss it."
Emily handed her a bouquet.
This time, it was simple.
White flowers.
Nothing extravagant.
Linda smiled.
"These are beautiful."
"I picked them myself."
They sat together on a bench.
Emily looked toward the graduation hall.
"I used to think I needed expensive things to prove I belonged here."
Linda nodded.
"And now?"
"I think I belong because I worked for it."
Linda smiled.
A university official approached.
"Ms. Morgan?"
Emily stood.
"Yes?"
"We have something for you."
He handed her an envelope.
Emily opened it.
Inside was a letter.
The university had created a scholarship in Linda's name.
Emily stared at her mother.
"You did this?"
Linda shook her head.
"No."
The official smiled.
"Your mother did not request it."
Emily looked confused.
"Then who did?"
The official pointed toward a plaque.
Emily read the inscription.
"The Linda Morgan Scholarship for First-Generation Students."
Emily's eyes filled with tears.
Then she noticed the final line.
"Funded anonymously."
She looked at Linda.
Linda smiled.
"I told you."
"What?"
"You don't need to know everything."
Emily laughed through her tears.
But then her phone vibrated.
A message appeared.
