Chapter 7 — Emily’s First Interview

Emily couldn't sleep.

Robert's warning repeated in her mind.

Someone was trying to get close to her.

But why?

She had never considered herself important.

Her mother was simply Linda.

The woman who worked ordinary jobs.

The woman who bought groceries carefully.

The woman who never wore expensive jewelry.

The woman who had slapped no one back.

The next morning, Emily returned to the company.

This time security allowed her inside.

Robert had arranged a meeting.

A senior executive named Daniel Price waited for her.

He was in his late fifties, perfectly dressed, with silver hair and a calm smile.

"Emily."

She sat down.

"You knew my mother."

Daniel smiled.

"I knew Linda before she became a mother."

"Who was she?"

"Brilliant."

"That's all?"

Daniel leaned back.

"She was also ruthless when necessary."

Emily couldn't imagine it.

"My mother?"

"Your mother built this company from nothing."

"How?"

Daniel hesitated.

"With one investment."

"What investment?"

He looked at her.

"She saved a failing company."

Emily frowned.

"And then?"

"She bought it."

"How much?"

Daniel smiled.

"Almost nothing."

Emily stared.

"What happened after?"

"She rebuilt it."

Daniel pushed a document toward her.

It showed the company's growth over twenty years.

The numbers were enormous.

Emily looked at the bottom.

"Why did she leave?"

Daniel's expression became serious.

"Because someone tried to kill her."

Emily froze.

"What?"

"It happened twenty-three years ago."

Her hands began trembling.

"Who?"

"We never found out."

Emily stared at him.

"Was it related to my father?"

Daniel's face changed.

"What do you know about your father?"

"Nothing."

Daniel stood.

"Then perhaps Linda was right."

"About what?"

"You're not ready."

Emily grabbed the document.

"I'm ready for everything."

Daniel looked toward the door.

Then he said quietly:

"Your father wasn't the man your mother told you he was."

Emily stopped breathing.

"Who was he?"

Daniel didn't answer.

Instead, he pointed toward a locked cabinet.
